as an aside lets have a little look at a combined & organised Europe now  Wink
.. and how they are handling their own energy issue co2/nuclear/wind to see how well ahead they are Laugh

Countries like Portugal and Spain have meanwhile been fighting for targets on building cross-border power lines, saying that nuclear-focused France is blocking them from exporting surplus electricity produced by wind.

ffs

https://au.news.yahoo.com/world/a/25336149/eu-leaders-close-in-on-climate-change-deal/

and how are the UK handling their own EURO links

https://au.finance.yahoo.com/news/uk-rejects-appalling-eu-demand-210502364.html

British Prime Minister David Cameron insists he will not pay an additional contribution to the European Union of 2.1 billion euros ($A3.15 billion) at a time of increasing pressure at home for the UK to leave the bloc.

The EU executive Commission said the demand stemmed from the fact that the economies of some countries, like Britain, have grown more than expected at the start of the year.

Cameron and his Dutch counterpart Mark Rutte already discussed a common protest at the EU summit, which ends on Friday. The Netherlands too is facing an increasingly vocal anti-EU camp.

Latest IPCC report is out - bring on Paris

http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-29855884

It re-states many familiar positions:

Warming is "unequivocal" and the human influence on climate is clear
The period from 1983 to 2012, it says, was likely the warmest 30 year period of the last 1,400 years
Warming impacts are already being seen around the globe, in the acidification of the oceans, the melting of arctic ice and poorer crop yields in many parts
Without concerted action on carbon, temperatures will increase over the coming decades and could be almost 5C above pre-industrial levels by the end of this century

are these land surface temps they're predicting or the atmosphere Womble ?
By:

When: 03 Nov 14 04:03
not sure Thebas, haven't read the report

either or, not good

interesting hearing a lady on the radio this morning saying the biggest problem for us is that the temperature increases it becomes harder for us to maintain our 37 degrees, we generate our own heat as well

nasty way to go
By:
Thebas
When: 03 Nov 14 04:11
yeah not sure here either ... you'd think the IPCC could be more specific

for example NASA can tell us the temp of the atmosphere has risen 0.8 c in total since the 1880's and has risen 0.5 c since 1950

these are not major changes to our globe thank goodness

the surface temps i would suggest have risen by more ... sue to deforestation (humans), more cares (humans), more shopping malls (humans), more rice paddies (humans) so the human fingerprint is undeniable

and the hottest town in australia (and at one point in the world) was marble bar WA

its temp has actually decreased since the 1930's ... probably not as many extra cars, shops, agriculture as our cities which do seem hotter

gotta be an answer ... i mean would our cities get much cooler (or hotter still) if we start trading co2 credits

cars will still run hot whether its petrol driven or not, shopping mall air-con exhausts will still dump hot moist air whether they are electricity driven of wind driven at the engine

are they sure they have an answer to the real problem ?

changing lifestyles could also slow things

but humans will be humans and they won't change you'd reckon

you'd think science could look at answer now ...

for example ... medical science is going ahead in leaps and bounds ... they seem focused on solutions and not just money swaps to adjust human behaviour where humans dont want to change

https://au.news.yahoo.com/qld/a/25401233/3d-printed-organs-another-step-closer-as-biofabrication-enters-university-mainstream/

3D implants using patient specific tissue (ie your own tissue not like a liver translpant from another person)

[b]3D printed organs another step closer as biofabrication enters university mainstream

Australian students will soon be learning how to use 3D printing to churn out living replacement body parts, as universities team with their European counterparts to offer a world-first degree course.

Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and the University of Wollongong will partner with the University Medical Centre Utrecht in the Netherlands and the University of Würzburg in Germany next year to offer the world's first international masters degree in 3D body part printing.

"We're able to add cells from the actual patients we're trying to treat, and that makes a three-dimensional living tissue."

"Take orthopaedics for example... You can get bones from the bone bank, which is other people's bones, but sometimes this causes reactions or infections,'" he said.

"What this technique does is make it very patient-specific so you can build something to exactly match the defected part, and it does not carry the risk of transmissible disease."

"It just gets smaller and smaller and the tissue forms more and more in the scaffold, which is highly porous, and eventually the polymer disappears and you're left with regenerated tissue."

Western Australia in October 2014: Hottest October on record
October 2014 in WA was the warmest October on record for both mean maximum temperature and mean minimum temperature since records commenced in 1910.
Mean maximum temperatures were above to very much above average across most of the state, with record high mean maxima for October reported in the South West Land Division (SWLD), southern Gascoyne, Goldfields, inland east Pilbara, Southern Interior, and Eucla. Apart from most of the Kimberley, near the WA west coast, and the eastern Eucla coast, mean maximum temperatures were 2 ° C to 4 °C warmer than normal across WA, and were up to 6 °C warmer than normal in the central Southern Interior. Averaged across the state, the mean maximum temperature in October 2014 was 2.9 °C above the long-term average and ranked as the warmest October on record. For the Lower Southwest (southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay), October 2014 was 2.5 °C above average, and the third warmest October on record.
Mean minimum temperatures were above average to very much above average across much of the state, apart from the central and east Kimberley, and northeast Northern Interior, with record high mean minma reported in the SWLD, southern Gascoyne, Goldfields, and Eucla. Mean minimum temperatures were 2 °C to 3 °C warmer than normal in a broad area across the east Pilbara, western Northern Interior, and central and southeastern WA, and were up to 6 °C warmer than normal in the central Southern Interior, whilst minimum temperatures in the east Kimberley were 1 °C to 2 °C cooler than normal. Averaged across the state, the mean minimum temperature in October 2014 was 2.1 °C above the long-term average and ranked as the warmest October on record. When averaged across the Lower Southwest, October 2014 ranked fifth warmest on record.
Rainfall in October 2014 in WA was above to very much above average in parts of the Pilbara, east Gascoyne, Goldfields, eastern SWLD, and western parts of the Northern and Southern Interior. Large parts of the southern SWLD recorded their wettest October for at least 20 years, and some sites, particularly in the Southeast Coastal, recorded their wettest October on record. Conversely, areas of the west Gascoyne, western SWLD, central and east Kimberley, eastern Northern Interior and northeast Southern Interior recorded below to very much below average rainfall. When averaged across the State as a whole, rainfall in October 2014 was near average; similarly rainfall was also near average for the SWLD and the Lower Southwest when averaged across those regions.
Hottest October on record for day-time temperature for WA with a 2.9 °C warm anomaly, 3rd warmest on record for the Lower Southwest
Hottest October on record for night-time temperature for WA with a 2.1 °C warm anomaly, 5th warmest on record for the Lower Southwest
Bidyadanga recorded a maximum temperature of 45.2 °C on the 9th, the earliest day on record in October in Australia with temperature over 45 °C. The previous record was on the 21st October 2002 when multiple sites in the Kimberley and Pilbara recorded maximum temperatures ranging from 45.2 °C to 46.7 °C. High temperatures in the west Kimberley and east Pilbara in the second week of the month also caused Derby Aerodrome to record its hottest October day in 30 years with 44.1 °C on the 7th.
A trough passage through the SWLD on the 16th led to unusually high temperatures across southern WA, with Eneabba (15th) and Esperance Aerodrome (16th) breaking their previous highest October maximum temperature, whilst Balladonia recorded its highest October minimum temperature on the 17th.
A low pressure system developed over southwest WA on the 18th and 19th before moving off the south coast on the 20th, bringing widespread thunderstorms and heavy rainfall across central and southern WA. A number of sites recorded daily rainfall totals in the 30 mm to 100 mm range and many sites in the SWLD, as well as Laverton Aerodrome in the Goldfields, recorded their wettest October day on record on the 19th or 20th. A supercell thunderstorm formed near New Norcia on the 18th and tracked to the southwest and over the Perth Metropolitan area in the afternoon producing heavy rainfall and large amounts of small hail. Severe thunderstorms redeveloped again on the 19th with several locations in eastern parts of the SWLD recording heavy rainfall and severe wind gusts.
Widespread severe thunderstorms occurred along a surface trough through southern and central parts of the SWLD on the 22nd. Hail larger than 20 cent coins (3 cm) and flash flooding were reported in the proximity of Boyup Brook in the South West district.

Carbon Trading

London – once mooted the future global hub of this industry –  has cut 70% of carbon trading jobs in the past four years. At least 10 London banks had reduced or closed their carbon trading desks amid turmoil in the European emissions trading scheme including Barclays, Deutsche Bank, UBS, JPMorgan and Morgan Stanley.    ... remember this bank

In Australia, the emissions trading industry had been given a huge boost under the (sic) Labour government, and this had led to all four of the major Australian banks – NAB, Westpac, CBA and ANZ – to build emissions trading teams.

Warwick Peel, MD of recruitment firm Search 360°, is blunt about prospects for carbon traders in Australia: “Carbon trading in Australia is dead – for now.” His firm recruits professionals for sustainability organisations across the spectrum of companies, NGOs and governments.

... and now JP Morgan ... and the GFC ... grubs and were looking for one more Ponzi/SubPrime rort in the shape of a global ETS

https://au.finance.yahoo.com/news/jpmorgans-9b-whistle-blower-breaks-190655129.html

A former deal manager at JPMorgan Chase (JPM) who was laid off in 2008 said she witnessed a "massive criminal securities fraud" while working at the bank during the years that lead up to the financial crisis but was forced to stay silent, according to Rolling Stone.

Fleischmann believes there is proof that the bank committed a crime including evidence that the firm made material misrepresentations about subprime loans, made material omissions, willfully and with specific intent and consciously ignored warnings from inside the firm and out, the magazine said.

The bank eventually settled with the government for what reports at the time said was $13 billion in an agreement that kept details under wraps aside from statements of facts.

Rolling Stone says the settlement was more like $9 billion.

26 July 1882 - snow fell for half an hour in Melbourne.[4]
1882 - Elizabeth Street in Melbourne was in flood.
1891 - The great flood causes the Yarra River to swell to 305 metres (1,001 ft) in width.[5] The most significant flood in Melbourne's recorded history, it forces thousands to vacate their homes and causes at least one death.
1908 - A heatwave strikes Melbourne.[6][7]
2 February 1918 - The Brighton tornado, an F3 class and the most intense tornado to hit a major Australian city, strikes the bay side suburb of Brighton.
9 November to 1 December 1934 - Torrential rainfall of up to 350 mm. Yarra River becomes raging torrent. Extensive damage with 35 dead, 250 injured, and 3,000 homeless.[8][9][10][11]
13 January 1939 - Melbourne experiences its second hottest temperature on record, 45.6 °C (114.1 °F), during a four-day nationwide heat wave in which the Black Friday bushfires destroy townships that are now Melbourne suburbs.[12]
1951 - A moderate cover of snow blankets the central business district (CBD) and suburbs.[13][14]
3 December 1954 - Record wet day causes flooding in Elwood and Flemington with homes also evacuated and Flinders Street and Swanston Street and major events cancelled.[15]
February 1972 - Elizabeth Street is flooded after a massive downpour of rain, with dramatic pictures of cars floating and underwater in the central city.[16][17]
8 February 1983 - The city is enveloped by a massive dust storm that "turned day into night".
16 February 1983 - Melbourne is encircled by an arc of fire as the Ash Wednesday fires encroach on the city.
18 September 1984 - Storm causes flooding of 100 homes in the eastern suburbs.[18]
December 1990 - Heatwave causes 4 deaths.[19]
26 December 1999 - Flash flooding damages 300 homes with the worst effect on Broadmeadows.

Many of the hottest days recorded in Melbourne occurred during major heatwaves which precipitated large firestorms:

47.2 °C (117.0 °F) (Anecdotal) – 6 February 1851 (Black Thursday)[31]
46.4 °C (115.5 °F) – 7 February 2009 (Black Saturday)

FACT SHEET: U.S.-China Joint Announcement on Climate Change and Clean Energy Cooperation

President Obama Announces Ambitious 2025 Target to Cut U.S. Climate Pollution by 26-28 Percent from 2005 Levels

Building on strong progress during the first six years of the Administration, today President Obama announced a new target to cut net greenhouse gas emissions 26-28 percent below 2005 levels by 2025.  At the same time, President Xi Jinping of China announced targets to peak CO2 emissions around 2030, with the intention to try to peak early, and to increase the non-fossil fuel share of all energy to around 20 percent by 2030.

Together, the U.S. and China account for over one third of global greenhouse gas emissions.  Today’s joint announcement, the culmination of months of bilateral dialogue, highlights the critical role the two countries must play in addressing climate change.  The actions they announced are part of the longer range effort to achieve the deep decarbonization of the global economy over time.  These actions will also inject momentum into the global climate negotiations on the road to reaching a successful new climate agreement next year in Paris.

The new U.S. goal will double the pace of carbon pollution reduction from 1.2 percent per year on average during the 2005-2020 period to 2.3-2.8 percent per year on average between 2020 and 2025.  This ambitious target is grounded in intensive analysis of cost-effective carbon pollution reductions achievable under existing law and will keep the United States on the right trajectory to achieve deep economy-wide reductions on the order of 80 percent by 2050.

The Administration’s steady efforts to reduce emissions will deliver ever-larger carbon pollution reductions, public health improvements and consumer savings over time and provide a firm foundation to meet the new U.S. target.

The United States will submit its 2025 target to the Framework Convention on Climate Change as an “Intended Nationally Determined Contribution” no later than the first quarter of 2015.

The joint announcement marks the first time China has agreed to peak its CO2 emissions. The United States expects that China will succeed in peaking its emissions before 2030 based on its broad economic reform program, plans to address air pollution, and implementation of President Xi’s call for an energy revolution.

China’s target to expand total energy consumption coming from zero-emission sources to around 20 percent by 2030 is notable. It will require China to deploy an additional 800-1,000 gigawatts of nuclear, wind, solar and other zero emission generation capacity by 2030 – more than all the coal-fired power plants that exist in China today and close to total current electricity generation capacity in the United States.

Building on Progress

In 2009, U.S. greenhouse gas emissions were projected to continue increasing indefinitely, but President Obama set an ambitious goal to cut emissions in the range of 17 percent below 2005 levels in 2020.  Throughout the first term, the Administration took strong actions to cut carbon pollution, including investing more than $80 billion in clean energy technologies under the recovery program, establishing historic fuel economy standards, doubling solar and wind electricity, and implementing ambitious energy efficiency measures.

Early in his second term, President Obama launched an ambitious Climate Action Plan focused on cutting carbon pollution, preparing the nation for climate impacts, and leading internationally.  In addition to bolstering first-term efforts to ramp up renewable energy and efficiency, the Plan is cutting carbon pollution through new measures, including:

classic  ... anti-carbon-tax campaigners ... (you must mean the electorate ... when speaking their voice at the recent federal election Laugh

At the same time, President Xi Jinping of China announced targets to peak CO2 emissions around 2030, with the intention to try to peak early, and to increase the non-fossil fuel share of all energy to around 20 percent by 2030.

australia should revisit it again in 2030 also

but in the meantime Australia already have an emissions reduction plan in place ...

a 5% emission reduction target ... the same today as the previous govt
(who were going to achieve their target even though granting Gina a brand new coal mine at Alpha Qld

its good to see China & the USA are joining australia in participating in attempting reductions
