Starting and finishing in the beautiful Italian hilltop town of Siena in Tuscany, Strade Bianche is one of my favourite races of the year. The scenery is amazing, both through the Etruscan countryside and in Siena itself. Literally "white roads" after the sections of white dirt tracks the race takes place on, Strade Bianche sees amazing white dust clouds thrown up as the peloton and caravan go over them. There are 9 sectors of white track as well as several sharp climbs. Some of the climbs come on the gravel sectors and these are extremely hard. With the climbs and white road sections requiring excellent bike handling skills, the cross section of riders we are interested in resembles some of the hilly cobbled races further North. Indeed the record of puncheurs who are at home on cobbles is excellent, with riders like Stybar, Cancellara, GVA, Sagan, Kwiatowski excelling in recent years. Bet £3.65 have done well to be the first to price this up and I've taken three prices with them. Sagan is a very big price at 10/1. For the WORLD CHAMP fits the bill here perfectly. He's looked amazingly strong so far this year, is a super climber, descender and bike handler. Another man who should be in fine form after his win in Oman as he builds up to his run at the Giro is Vincenzo Nibali. He's been taking the Italian one day races more seriously recently so even though he has never done much in this race before he needs taking seriously and I've had a smaller play at 10/1. Lastly, Taylor Phinney is here to support GVA but with an amazing engine, great bike handling skills and a real will to enjoy racing after his extended time out due to injury, I'll take a chance at 150/1.
