Just a quick question regarding Silvinaccio. He is now into 12s but can anyone tell me the last horse to win the GN that hadn't won a handicap previously?
I think it will be hard to find a horse that has won almost a £million in chase prize money and never run in a handicap after 22 Chase starts. Plus the horse is accustomed to carrying around 11-8, the horse won't feel any different, he won't know that he is giving away weight to inferior animals or that he is 6 lb well in to that matter.
The blinkers seemed to perk him up last time out as well. There is no better jumper than SC, it will be a fascinating race if he goes for it. A real treat, i hope the owners can be persuaded.

I take on board your facts regarding prize money and experience Zen. However, the horse has never won in a field bigger than 10 runners. His two Gold Cup appearances were in fields of 13 (4th) and 16 (pu). You can counter this by saying he doesn't like Cheltenham which is fair enough. But in my mind there is enough doubt that he may not enjoy the hustle and bustle of that charge to the 1st fence. I'd much rather back Many Clouds at 2 point shorter given all his pros.

Certainly get your point charlie, however i think the horse is plenty experienced enough to cope with it all. Cheltenham is obviously not the course for him, so i can't really use that as a reference point. Of course you could very well be right, but i think he is so athletic at his fences that he will cope with being surrounded by the pack until his class takes him into a more relaxed zone.

Think the answer to the original question is Grittar in 1982, although for very different reasons.
Since then, the closest would be Garrison Savannah, who'd never even run in a handicap before he finished second - and Miinnehoma, who'd only won a five runner handicap a month before his National win.

Surely Conti has a big chance if staying. I would be more concerned if he he had ran in handicaps and not won one. I won't be backing him tho price to short for me.
