Wasn't stopping at Cheltenham over 4 miles as a novice and has had a few quite runs this year before returning to some kind of form LTO. Extra distance should bring about improvement, seems versatile ground wise, although I would prefer it on the softer side to put more emphasis on stamina. Low weight and decently handicapped.

I think he has got a big handicap win in him not sure if he can win GN this year tho.

I put him up before his run last week saying I don't know why I fancied him for the GN thought he put in a good performance.

He may of not won over 3 miles, buts its not stamina that is the problem.

He is just a very slow horse, all the more reason to be positive about his 3rd place at Cheltenham.

My main bet... on him at 66-1 top 4 and 50-1 top 5 both NRNB.... looks tailor made for the race. Stayed on very well in the 4 miler at Cheltenham so cant see stamina being an issue.

I see that BB is entered for the Irish GN I wonder if he will go for that and try the English version next year.

Guess that's why NRNB is a must at the min. Plenty entered in both. I actually think the extreme trip will favour BB and our National would suit him much better.

Its dangerous second guessing a trainers plans but Tony Martin has a decent chance in the Irish National with another Malcolm Denmark runner in Guess Again, who is a 33-1 poke put is ahorse i like and was travelling well in the Kim Muir when unsighted and fell. All ground comes the same to him and has some interesting bits of form which i think puts him in the mix. I do agree though, Buddy Bolero nrnb isnt a bad shout.

betilyered........you're going to think I'm a mad stalker after joining you with Hillbilly Boy, but Guess Again is a big fancy of mine too. He was a real eyecatcher in The Kim Muir, and he was cantering when he came down. I bet him for Aintree at 400's to 450's off the back of that run, and I think he was really unlucky. Although he's quite far down the list, he would have got in from there most times in recent years, and I'm hopeful.

Obviously though, as you say, he's got that Fairyhouse entry, and I took a chance at the 33's, and 25's NRNB.

Al Co?

lol betil, I like Al Co for Aintree, and be interesting to see how he gets on today. It's never a good idea to dismiss Bowens runners at Aintree. You'll be pleased to know I haven't bet him though. Missed the boat with him at Ayr, when I went for one of his other runners, Pure Faith.

First time in 25 years, I've not had a strong long term #1 fancy for the race, after Trustan Times didn't get an entry, and Golden Wonder got injured and missed the rest of the season. I'll put up a shortlist after the next declaration stage.

Not sure what to make of Al co today. Ive mentioned on another thread that he has taken a similar route to McKelvey this year, the difference being Mckelvey ran an eyecatcher in the Becher and won the Bangor Hurdle, Al Co ran poorly at Aintree and not that great today. I think throw in the fact that bar Auroras Encore the Scottish National has not been the best guide to Aintree, on the balance I'll forget about Al Co.

Just like I did at Ayr last year

Mon Mome,Neptune Collonges and Auroras Encore ran in Scots National then won GN year later so I think it is a very good guide.

betil, I wouldn't be too downbeat about Al Co yesterday, I thought that was an OK prep.

My point was Auroras Encore is the only horse that ran well in the race before winning at aintree. The other 2 were beaten 47 and 34 lengths respectively which given how many horses have ran in the race before Aintree doesnt make it much of a guide. The Hennesey used to be the best guide, along with the Welsh National strangely enough.

FWIW if flagged up an interesting thing about Al Co and his noseband on the Grand National Thoughts thread.

It might be an advantage him not being declared. He's fallen twice in ten years (I appreciate the fences are easier but that's still a bad sign). No wins on ground faster than soft. No wins on a non-undulating track. I can't remember if Folkestone has an uphill finish or not. If if does then all his wins have had uphill finishes. He's only ever won one chase at Leicester and one at Exeter.
