THE 2013 JOHN SMITH’S GRAND NATIONAL

Class 1, Grade 3, £975,000 total prize fund. 4.15pm, Aintree, Saturday, April 6, 2013, about four miles, three and a half
furlongs. For seven-year-olds and upwards who, up to and including March 18, 2013, have been placed first, second, third
or fourth in a chase of three miles or more and which are allotted a rating of 120 or more by the BHA Head of Handicapping
following a review of the horses entered and after taking account of races run up to and including February 10, 2013. Horses
who are not qualified for a rating in Great Britain or Ireland at closing may also be entered. Such horses may be eligible for
a weight providing the handicapper is satisfied that the horse's racecourse performances up to and including February 10
would merit a minimum rating of 120. To qualify, horses must have run at least three times in chases run under the Rules of
Racing of the same Recognised Racing Authority up to and including February 10, 2013. At the handicapper's discretion, such
horses may be allocated a rating. The decision of the BHA Head of Handicapping shall be final. The British Horseracing
Authority has modified Rule (F)42.2.1 for the purposes of this race, such that racecourse performances up to and including
Sunday, February 12, may be taken into account. A novice horse shall only be qualified to run in this race if it has run a
minimum of three times in chases in Great Britain, Ireland or France in accordance with Rule (F)42.5. Highest weight 11st 10lb
- no penalties after publication of the weights. Entries closed January 29, entries revealed January 30 (84 entries, 1
subsequently scratched before publication of the weights), weights revealed February 12, first scratchings’ deadline February
26, second scratchings’ deadline March 19. Five-day confirmation stage April 1, final declaration stage 10.00am, April 4.

Personally think the weights are a disgrace.

If TB had got his true rating there would only be 30 horses in the handicap proper. So the weights are copmpressed to make it more competitive and to encourage the best horse to run. The best horses run faster and are braver, that's what needs to be corrected not just the effing starting position.
Report boy wonder 07 February 12, 2013 1:52 PM GMT
i agree roobuck smith has lost the plot its a handicap and horses should be weighted accordingly also top weight should be 12st but that will never happen
Report roobuck February 12, 2013 2:11 PM GMT
Ain't going to have a bet in the race but 25s for TB if you think he'll be suited by the race is massive.
Report boy wonder 07 February 12, 2013 2:15 PM GMT
i have bet the last two seconds and have had a good bet at 20's i hoped he would have max of 10-12 dont really fancy anything else

With Chanting here,,

Teaforthree is the one.

A battler, a stayer, a big scopey type and will relish better ground and a marathon trip. He reminds me of Lord Gylene.

Tidal Bay,Midnight Chase and Magnanimity look interesting.
Report Colonel Sanders February 13, 2013 10:09 PM GMT
My first thoughts were Jessie's Dream, Midnight Chase & Magnanimity but the latter hasn't won over 3m+ since his P2P win
Report Angel Gabrial February 14, 2013 12:06 AM GMT
^^However Magnanimity did run a cracker in the RSA keeping on really well over the 3 miles. I think good ground will help his chances.

What A Friend is an intended runner and he could end up being topweight (AR and IC seem unlikely to run in my mind)

This would mean that a whole bunch of horses would end up carrying more than ideal.

If this happened then these would be some of the weights:

Prince de Beauchene 11-8
Seabass 11-7
Ballabriggs 11-5
Midnight Chase 11-5
Sunnyhill Boy 11-5
Teaforthree 11-4
Join Together 11-3

Of course this does not preclude them from winning but it does make it tougher and some of these are short in the betting

I will be laying them
Report Michrich February 15, 2013 9:36 AM GMT
How do you know What a Friend is an intended runner? I'm not saying he isn't.

What did we think of the Teaforthree run at Haydock?
Report judorick February 18, 2013 11:36 PM GMT
hasn't he got some ridiculous mark like 155 for the National? very harsh imo if that's right
Report Mully February 19, 2013 1:00 PM GMT
Rebecca Curtis believes a combination of a big weight, unsuitable ground and track conditions caused Teaforthree to under-perform in the Betfred Grand National Trial at Haydock.

The Welsh National runner-up was expected to enhance his claims for the John Smith's Grand National at Aintree but finished a well-beaten 10th of the 11 finishers on Saturday.

However, Curtis retains the faith in the winner of the four-mile National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham last March and will send him straight to Aintree without another run.

"He didn't enjoy the sticky ground. It was tough for him to get his feet out of it and I wouldn't call Haydock a real jumping track," said the Pembrokeshire trainer.

"He didn't have a overly hard race. I think he'll go straight to the National, we'll have a job getting another race into him before then and you don't know how much the Welsh National took out of him.

"He'll go on soft ground but he hated that drying out, sticky ground. Carrying top weight on that ground just told on him in the end."
