Stuart Crawford (Killyglen 10st 4lb)
"Off that weight you'd be fairly hopeful he'd get in the race, and that is the main thing. "The horse is in good form and he'll probably have a run somewhere during the first weekend in March. "He could go the same route as last year and run in the Grimthorpe Chase at Doncaster, or he could go to the Premier Chase at Kelso or a handicap chase in Leopardstown. "Doncaster would probably be the favourite option at this stage, but it would be ground dependant. "He nearly made it round Aintree in the Grand National last year and he's a good jumper. With that bit more experience under his belt, I'd be hopeful he would get round this time and run a big race." ![]() |

Could hardly be better - very likley to get a run and a lovely racing weight.

50th on the list, number 69 was last one in last year so almost a certainty to get in.

Rp post National comment last year: Killyglen looked one of the unluckiest in the race. He was always in the leading group and still appeared to be going well enough when departing at the last ditch.
Pretty sure iirc that Killyglen made a mistake the fence before fall. From memory i thought was just starting to tire.Agreed nice weight ![]() |

Thought I'd been a clever clever boy last year backing Killyglen big time; am sure he'd have been placed but probably wouldn't have beaten Ballabriggs. Got to give him another chance.

He really is well handicapped, fingers crossed

I've backed Killylgen quite heavily and was hoping to have seen him out by now. He's missed the prep races that the trainer initially mentioned as possible. Hope there's nothing amiss and that they get a run into him soon, even if it's a spin over hurdles. Anyone have any info?

Entered this Sat at Down Royal

Thought that was a really nice prep. Closed down the leader when asked and seemed to have plenty left in the tank at the finish.

Delighted. Poor at first two and untidy at 2nd last, otherwise jumped great.
Bring on the National! |

I was quite expecting him to get beat on that going(had changed to soft from the morning).Really did seem effortless. Hopefully drier at Aintree.

Had a bit of 48s on him. What do people think he will go off at? 20/1?

By:
backed it today as it was crossing the winning post. Happy with 33's

Just read on the sporting life website that the reason the horse didn't go to Doncaster was because it had a palate operation which I presume is to help improving his breathing. All systems go in my book.
Killyglen kept alive his John Smith's Grand National hopes at Down Royal with a first win for nearly three years. Stuart Crawford's charge held fellow Aintree entry Saddlers Storm to register a welcome victory in the Daily Mirror Chase. Saddlers Storm made a good fist of attempting to make all of the running, and Killyglen had to work hard to get the better of that rival. Robbie Power sent Killyglen into the lead at the second-last fence and the 15-8 favourite went on to score by five and a half lengths. In Compliance was third. Crawford revealed Power, who won the Grand National aboard Silver Birch in 2007, will retain the partnership at Aintree next month. He said: "Robbie will ride him in the National. "He was running a big race in third last year when he fell - he was tracking the leader, in fact. "Everything has been geared towards the National this season whereas last year we only decided to go for it a few weeks before the race. "He was due to run in the Grimthorpe at Doncaster a few weeks ago but had a palate operation and was not quite right for it so came here instead. "That ground wasn't ideal for him. He's better off this year in the National as he's dropped 4lb or 5lb." |

Killyglen on course for Aintree
By Gary Carson irishracing.com Killyglen ran out a cosy winner of the Daily Mirror Chase at Down Royal, setting up another tilt at the Grand National. The Presenting gelding was bang in contention at Aintree last year before falling four from home and connections are hoping for another big show this time. Robbie Power settled his mount behind the leaders before making his move before the second last in the 3m2f contest today. Stuart Crawford's charge kicked on from front-runner Saddlers Storm before the last and a fine leap there settled matters. Power could afford to ease his mount going to the line as he recorded a convincing five-and-a-half length success. The winner had been backed from 9/4 into 13/8 this morning before being sent off 15/8 favourite on course. The runner-up Saddlers Storm had attracted support from 6/1 before racing and was returned 4/1 second choice. "Robbie will ride him in the National," revealed Crawford. "He was running a big race in third last year when he fell. He was tracking the leader in fact. He's better off this year in the National as he's dropped 4 or 5lb." Crawford has his string in fine form and has had 11 winners this season between Ireland and Britain. The winning owner Davy McCammon, who hails from Larne, missed the success as he is currently on holidays in Benidorm. |

Choo Choo, all aboard.
![]() Everything looks in place for a big run. Robbie Power (Killyglen, fell 27th): "We were very unlucky. He was going well and I was getting a super spin off him. I still had loads of horse left, but he just left his legs in the last ditch." |

Agree with Roger The Butler, Killyglen goes to Aintree with every chance particularly with just 10-4 on his back following on from his eyecatching run in last year's race, connections have been very clever this season in maintaining a handicap mark of 141.
Quite impressed with his victory at Down Royal last week, jumped the first two a bit dodgy but soon settled down, jumping well and was very much on top in the end, just the type of race to get him fighting fit for the big race, Its all systems go now and hopefully will be cheering him home from the Princess Royal Stand having backed him at 40's and 33's |

not for me think he will struggle to get round again.

Killyglen ticks all the boxes this year as the best handicapped horse in the race,25/1 is absolutely massive,he was jumping like a buck last year but got caught out by 2 on the bounce, this year will be a different kettle of fish as he is back in great form and the race has been targeted.i always like to see a horse who has shown a bit of class in the past, for me killyglen has a similar profile to a past winner like royal athlete, who went off at around even money for the RSA,killyglen has played it in the big league in the past with stars like kauto,he was a fantastic winner of the big novice at aintree and still travels like a good horse, personally i was waiting to see if he still had the legs to win a race, his downpatrick win confirms just that, the preparation looks spot on.

Did my nuts on this horse in the HGC off 154. Has to be well handicapped now off 141.

Keep topping up small amounts on this and Chicago Grey.

Watched last year again last night and a suspicion he may have had enough when he came down - had also made an error at the previous fence. Think I would be more interested in him not to complete.

Like Killyglen there were five horses with Strong Gale in them travelling well four from home in the 2009 renewal - Offshore Account, Southern Vic, Hear The Echo, Darkness & Idle Talk. How many reached the frame? Precisely none with one even losing his life. Strong Gale is the singlemost worst influence in Grand National participants pedigrees in the entire history of the great race. 36 have gone to post. Best placing? Sixth in 1996 when four Strong Gale geldings went to post in a weak 27 runner affair. Killyglen, Cappa Bleu and On His Own are the lays for the brave in running punter with this Strong Gale influence in all three. All those to complete have hit the proverbial wall between 4m-4m 2f.

Roselier, what does the bredding for West End Rocker tell you ? Any doubts for the distance ..

You've got to concentrate on the dam for the stamina. WER's dam is by the same sire as Chicago Grey's i.e. Lord Americo. As a stallion rather than a damsire Lord Americo only ever had one winner over four miles from over 30 attempts (Garryvoe). The thing with WER is that he should stay i.e his stride won't be shortening like Big Fella Thanks' and Niche Market's did last year but it's at what speed he does it. Do you agree? I just think he's slow. He reminds me one hell of a lot like another King runner that, unlike WER yet, had previously won over four miles and that's Bear On Board. Just found it happening a bit too quick but was a confirmed stayer.

Isn't it clutching at straws to read so much into the influence of a great-grandparent?
|
|
By:
There is something in a pedigree. Just check out how many winners Roselier produced over four miles. Old Vic has produced the last two winners over four miles and Sadlers Wells stallions have produced the last four winners over four miles.

By:
Yes, of course. But it makes little sense in terms of the laws of genetics for a great-grandsire to have the determining influence and 27 is not a significant sample size in a race of 40 runners per year. The theory looks Post hoc ergo propter hoc to me.
Monjeu's never won at Cheltenham until they did. |

Apologies, you said 36, not 27.
