Once again it's all three days for me in the Princess Royal seats.
I used to religiously stay in Southport in a hotel but as of last year, due to the credit crunch, I stay with a lovely young lady in Ormskirk Silly

Is it fairly near for you then?
Report apindy1 January 19, 2012 8:00 PM GMT
Yep !!! I work 10 mins from there ,but live 30 mins away just off Queens Drive .. First Stop Weatherspoons Brekkie and a Few Prayers !!
Report Billy Liddell January 19, 2012 8:18 PM GMT
I started going in 83, apart from 87 never missed a year. Best three days of the year for me with the Thurday being the best for racing and betting opportunities. Lay on the couch Friday with the day being tricky for winners and then force myself to do it all again on Saturday. County roof this year after missing out on Queen Mother seats due to Aintree selling out before they even went on general sale. (Sold out to season ticket holders)

How far is Aintree from Liverpool city centre? Can anyone recommend a cheap and cheerful b&b for the Sat night (There's 10+ of us)
Report apindy1 January 20, 2012 1:39 PM GMT
Aintree 25 mins by taxi 20 mins train straight there, but good luck with the b+b bit prices go up accordingly too.

Stopping in The Baytrees Hotel in Southport; anyone know it? Going for all 3 days for the first time this year, booked West Tip seats. Anyone know how much a taxi will be from Southport to Aintree or is it better to get the train?
Report apindy1 January 29, 2012 7:58 PM GMT
Bluebird : Good atmosphere on train , change trains at Sandhills and  Get train to Ormskirk and get off at Aintree !! HappyHappy
Report .Fidway. January 29, 2012 9:40 PM GMT
i will give you a lift bluebirdfan Silly
Report Mully January 30, 2012 7:16 PM GMT
Terry-when I was a student I lived right across the road from Tony's Laugh

Bluebird- that hotel is a fairish brisk walk from the station. Save your money for a shortish taxi ride home after racing each day as your feet will be killing you. The railway station is actually on that road as it turns into Hoghton St. I'd stick to the train, only costs about £4.50 return and there's always race-goers on it.

Cracking restaurant. Looks like nothing from outside but A1 food.

Advise please, Princess Royal stand seats £75 or Platinum County stand £79 going on the Thursday which one would the experts advise we go for?
Thanks
Jinxy
Report jinxy1955 February 11, 2012 2:07 PM GMT
Anyone?
Report Mully February 11, 2012 3:32 PM GMT
Hi Jinxy,
Do you need to sit down or would it be purely for convenience? If you don't need to sit the Platinum County stand would be best on the Thursday. Not over busy and always a good knowledgeable/horsey crowd in that stand. Closer to the winning line too.
Report jinxy1955 February 11, 2012 4:29 PM GMT
Thanks for the reply Mully one of the lads is a wheelchair user but Aintree is Disabled friendly so the Platinum County stand should be fine. Thanks for your valuable advice.
Jinxy
Report Mully February 11, 2012 8:22 PM GMT
Oh yes, they are good with the wheelchairs-not an issue there. They will go directly up with you and show you to the area. In fairness it's quite convenient for the bar too Silly

PR roof for me + 20(at the moment) this year and usual Southport (£25 in a taxi).
Missed buying the PR seats as i was at York when the lines opened and my mobile went on the blink so couldnt call in.
Down on the Friday as usual so may hit ladies day for a change.
Stopped staying at the POW as they are rippin the pi$h for the rooms - same wee B&B as last year for me in Bold St .
Train ok coming home if you cant get a taxi, usually go to Ormskirk and get taxi there
Report Mully February 16, 2012 10:14 AM GMT
Bold St is ok. Have you had a drink in the Bold Hotel on the corner?

Blimey, Those Vincent guys must have some money Laugh
Report sgt bilko February 29, 2012 8:27 PM GMT
Same price as POW unbelievably
Report Mully March 7, 2012 9:49 AM GMT
I half suspect the POW needs a bit of a face lift inside just like the Scarisbrick? I think they both charge on former reputations rather than modern comfort and decor.
Report sgt bilko March 7, 2012 5:04 PM GMT
Correct......its pretty run down IMO.They also charge to get out the car park!
Buffet breakfast was pretty good.
They wouldnt serve us beers on the Sunday morning even though we were residents(eventually convinced the bar staff to serve us at around 1130). Not 100% but think they were serving beers at the Spoons on the Sunday last year.
It will have been 2 years since i have stayed there so it may have changed. Its not worth £150 a night for a Twin room

Never seen the Scarybrick sober or in the light of day
Report Mully March 8, 2012 1:53 PM GMT
One thing I like about the Brick is Maloney's. It's always full of talent. Had many a good night in there from being a student at 20 yrs old to now and I'm nearly 40 Laugh

ffs ,stayed in this hotel myself manytimes ,the last time was a couple of years ago and only because the deal was good ,two twins for 140.Was always on the lash but the last time we stayed there it was pretty much a tea total trip and yes the place was looking very tired but it could possible have been that way for years Southport is ok once stayed in great altcar and the grapes hotel was a real eye opener ,quality skirt wall to wall
Used to go to the scotch piper on the way back from racing to the diggs  a great we ye old pub down the road at liadate.
staying somewhere near chester this year for a change but many happy trips staying in and around southport.
Report Mully March 20, 2012 1:10 PM GMT
That Scotch Piper pub isn't as old as it looks surprisingly. It's a converted barn type place. Had many a good time with in the pubs out in the sticks around Southport/Ormskirk/Lidiate/Scarisbrick/Busrcough.
