It hasn't exactly been happening for the footballers or the hurlers the last few year leaving the locals in a less than favourable disposition to most GAA related topics of conversation in the bars of Ballybrit and surrounding areas.
The Footballers at least have a proud tradition of making it count when they have the players and assuming Meehan comes back on song and PJ is still defying the laws of nature, and maybe a handful of the victorious U-21 side make the grade good and early than a decent Summer is well within their grasp. O Flaharta will have to prove he is able for the higher levels and he may well do but this may well be a year too soon for the Galway footballers. Still, despite relegation from Div 1, a victory against Mayo is well within them and I wouldn't be ruling out a Quarter Final appearance in Croke Park this year if it comes together for them. Would certainly be great to see Joyce on the grand stage one more time.
As for the hurlers, well God only knows. Perennial losers, they have a not so proud tradition of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory and square up against the league Champions Dublin in Tullamore Saturday week. Can they win, Yes, Will they win, probably not. It's been a downward spiral for the hurlers since the mouth McYntire opened his gob yet again and called for a big turnout v Tipp. Tipp duly toasted them and things don't appear to have improved at all since. Joe Canning has at least had a fair old rest over the last few months ans is reportedly looking all the better for it. Fergal Moore has also returned and can hopefully command the full back line in the absence of Ollie Canning. Lads like Jonny Coen from Loughrea and Eoin Ford and Barry Daly from Bridge have been drafted in with fellas like Niall Healy and Chunk Hayes losing out which looks on the face of it like a good thing. As ever Galway have the raw tools to make a serious impact in the quest for Liam McArthy but until they actually go and win one they will always be dismissed as serious contenders at the top table. Frankly if a side from Galway does last until raceweek it's more likely to be the footballers.
