The Weld Galway schooling sessions already in full swing, a stable to avoid for the most part especially in handicaps from now till the end of July, a lot of the non jiggers will be ridden by the stable apprentices.

Saqil had it's 3rd run tonight at Tipperary in a One Mile 4 Furlong Maiden. Ran as expected a Weld 16/1 shot should run in a miaden. Won't be anything like that price in Ballybrit no doubt but expect it to run a bit better in it's handicap at Galway (understatement of the year Cool )

This thread is a most welcome addition to the Galway 2011 Forum.

Looking forward to my visit on the Thursday & Friday.

My "handbrake radar" is primed to maximum observation levels in the coming weeks...

Plenty of jiggers being "readied" Laugh

Steering jobs? .. Shark Hanlon is a shrewd bucko at Ballybrit, I seen Darenjan run a nice race behind Silk Hall at the Curragh in a 2m handicap. Was off the course since 2009, always runs creditably well at Galway. Bahrain Storm was another one in that same race that caught the eye. Also, Teach Nua is entered in a low handicap late on Thursday could be primed for the stages at Ballybrit. D K Weld, the patron saint of Rásaí Na Gaillimhe. That is all ..Cool

I'm hoping Secretary of State runs in Galway. He is well up to winning an average maiden and should have won his most recent start in Gowran. Has plenty of experience, runs on well and will handle any give in the ground that may arise in Ballybrit. The 3yo maidens in Galway are generally of a moderate standard and this lad could be one the bookies would wish to take on giving he has been beaten several times already. If I see him entered i'll be loading up anyway!!

What has the strenght of the 3yo maidens to do with Secretary Of States chance?
Report Allduckornodinner July 11, 2011 10:21 PM BST
Sorry typo, 2yo maidens I mean't to say. Well really as theres only three races open to 2yo colts races in the week I am specifically talking about the 1 mile maiden on at the end of the week. Think it's the saturday.

Tony he should have won in Gowran. Joseph dropped a lovely position on the run to the bend for no good reason and gave his stablemate a few lengths start. Unlucky to not have picked him up again before the line imo
Report Pull Hard July 12, 2011 12:01 PM BST
Young Lochinvar hacked up over 7flgs 2 years ago, completely lost form last season and is about a stone lower now as a result.  Needs to go up about 10lbs to get into the same race again this year and runs today in DD. I would expect it to go v close today given expected improvement from its seasonal debut, and if winning would end up getting a hike in the reigon of 7-10lbs.  I could be wrong but i hope i'm not!

"Referrals Committee has been asked to review the failure of the stewards at Tipperary to impose a sanction following the running of the Kevin McManus Bookermaker Grimes Hurdle. The review will take place as a result of an application made by Denis Egan"

INTERESTING!
Report Anaglogs Daughter July 21, 2011 8:38 PM BST
THE Referrals Committee of the Turf Club is to review the controversial performance of  The Real Article at Tipperary on Sunday and the failure of the stewards on the day to impose any sanction.

A complete rehearing of the incident will be undertaken on Monday by the committee, whose options range from taking no action to penalising the jockey, trainer and/or horse.

The Real Article finished a short-head second to Captain Cee Bee, under a hands-and-heels ride from Paddy Mangan, in the Grade 3 Kevin McManus Bookmaker Grimes Hurdle and an inquiry was called into the riding of the six-year-old from the second-last flight to the finish.

Mangan told the stewards he was under instructions not to use his whip and that he was satisfied he had achieved the best possible placing.

He added that The Real Article was travelling very well between the last two hurdles and that  he had hoped to "arrive on the line".

Edward O'Grady, trainer of the horse, said he had told Mangan to get a lead into the straight and to ride out with hands and heels and not to hit the horse. He told the stewards he was satisfied with the ride. The officials accepted the explanations.

The Real Article was immediately made favourite for next Thursday's Guinness Galway Hurdle, in which he will be
18lb well in having been raised that amount by senior jumps
handicapper Noel O'Brien following Sunday's race.

On Thursday it was announced that following an application made by Denis Egan, chief executive of the Turf Club, the Referrals Committee has been asked to review the failure of the Tipperary stewards to impose any sanction.

Egan said: "Having looked at videos of the Tipperary race it was decided the full race in question should be reviewed. It will be a complete rehearing of all aspects of the race and will not be confined to any one aspect."

Should the Referrals Committee reach a different decision to that of the local stewards then that ruling will be open to appeal.

Paddy Power has opened an index on how The Real Article will fare in the Galway race.

The Real Article performance index
7-2 1st; 5 2nd; 7 3rd; 4-5 unplaced; 16 fall, unseat, brought down; 25 pulled up/carried out, refuse.

Anyhow, here are some of the ones that I'll be interested in during the course of the week. Obviously, running plans change, but here you go.

Sumwaal (Weld) - seems like this is everyone's banker in the first.
Daffern Seal (Weld) - won a poor race and Sligo but I think it will act on the track
Be My Storm (Weld) - ran at Roscommon on 4  July. First run in 234 days and given a very tender ride. We've seen this carry on before with his runners pre Galway
Banna Man - running well and has Galway form.
Celebrity Sevi (Weld) - won a poor race at Sligo but it was very impressive and I think it will act on the track
Dark Passion (Lyons) - one of my faves for the week on face value. Well thought of and won quite well at Bellewstown
Darenjan (Hanlon) - won at killarney LTO and GAlway has always been the plan. A trainer I like too.
End Of The Affair - hacked up at Dundalk
Gimli's Rock - the GH if the going is good.
Jamesie (Marnane - another trainer I like) - He put it up as his most fancied on ATR today. If it stays 7f then I think it will have a live chance, aimed at a 7f on the Saturday.
Kalann - won its prep at Fairyhouse well, when it wasn't even fully wound up, according to Sabrina Harty.
London Bridge (Meade) - a decent horse on the flat for Gosden and now getting to grips with hurdling.
Printmaker (Lyons) - Topaz Mile. Won over 1m 1f LTO. No bad thing in helping it get up thie hill
Rudi Tuesday (De Bromhead) - Ran well in first run for two years at Cork, expect it to come on for that effort.
Steps To Freedom (Harrington) - versatile horse but especially interested if it runs in a hurdle.
Teach Nua (Weld) - Ran well at Fairyhouse, first run in 419 days. Won at Galway in 2009. Espcially interested if it runs in a hurdle.
Taameer (Weld) - won a good race earlier this week, beating the likes of Duff. Weld is looking at running it in the 1m 6f race on the Friday. Now that's a big step up but clearly he has the horse in high regard.
Van Wyck - Galway trained and owned, could run on the Monday

I'm sure I've missed out on a couple. Obviously, already down on the week now that Tornado Shay isn't running but such is life. I'm keen on Majestic Concorde.

I'll keep an eye out for locally trained and owned horses - so VT OBrien, David Martin Kelly and Gilligan (good to see him getting on the board this week).

I'll be mindful of some old stalwarts too - Separate Ways, Celtic Dane, Truckers Tavern.

Roll on Monday night.

A few interesting ones above. Just a couple of observations.

Jamesie - no problem with 7f, won over 8f as 2yo. Looks on the up and v consistent this year. What's not to like?
Gimli's Rock - his hurdle mark is shocking IMO.
Printmaker - no chance of getting into the Galway Mile.
Taameer - think this horse will go backwards from Naas, seems to go well fresh.

Cant imagine many going better turning in seems to have a lovely change of gear when required. Well it did last time anyhow!!!Penaltys and stiffer track obvious drawbacks but far less to prove than Sulwaan as things stand.
