Oscars Well will attempt to atone for his unlucky run at Cheltenham in the Evening Herald Champion Novice Hurdle at Punchestown on May 3. "He goes for the two-mile novice at Punchestown, and I am really looking forward to running him there," said trainer Jessica Harrington. This is a machine Champion Hurdle next year maybe ..

Ifs and buts and what if's ..Yes reve if Rock On Ruby was a little more fluent at the last I'd say he would have won by a length or two with a sprint. I think the horse to take out of the race may be So Young, this is the horse that was ''tanking'' all over Quevega at home in Carlow. He jumped his hurdles with no more fluency and Ruby gave him a bad ride. The NI hurdle was So Young's only 3 outing since joining Willie Mullins. The winner had 5 runs before Chelt, 2nd had 6 outings and Oscars Well who finished 4th had 7 runs before Chelt.

They just didn't go fast enough for this fella at Cheltenham. Jumped beautifully, bar the last of course(!!) Jessie seems pretty adamant that Champion Hurdle next year is the way to go - I trust her judgement.....

No way of knowing for sure if he would have won,but im pretty sure out of the neptune novices that OW is the one that could trouble Hurricane Fly next season.

I backed the horse, but thats a plain silly statement.

that said the 11/8 on offer at the magic sign is very tempting seeing as the 2nd and 3rd fav surely unlikely to run.

I don't see why First Lieutenant will be dropped back to 2, but why wouldn't So Young run? I will be backing Oscar anyway as I think he could be a machine, but unsure whether to take the 11/8 or not...

The Friday race is named after the guy that founded Ryanair. I think this will be First Lieutenants race.
Report revedesivola April 22, 2011 6:28 PM BST
Laugh no it aint, named after the late owner of swordlestown stud, tony ryan founded ryanair. i dont think that would enhance first liutenants chance even if it was named after tony ryanLaugh

Cathal Ryan Memorial Novice Hurdle
25-Mar-2010
Punchestown racecourse today announced that Swordlestown Stud and the Ryan family will sponsor the Grade 1 Cathal Ryan Memorial Novice Hurdle on Friday 23rd April at the Punchestown Irish National Hunt Festival. The 2 mile 4 furlong contest worth €85,000 is a fitting tribute to the late Cathal Ryan who was a great supporter of the track and of the National Hunt industry in Ireland.

Ryan, who sadly passed away following a short illness in December 2007, became involved with sponsorship at Punchestown when Swordlestown Stud first sponsored the 2m Champion Novice Chase at the 1999 Festival. The Swordlestown Cup went on to become one of the most prestigious novice steeplechases on the jump calendar during its ten years of running.

As well as co-founding the Ryanair airline, Cathal Ryan also established a successful commercial breeding operation with notable winners such as No Refuge in the National Hunt ranks and Proclamation enjoying Group successes on the flat. As a national hunt owner Ryan’s most notable success was when Cork All Star won the Weatherbys Champion Bumper at the 2007 Cheltenham Festival.

Hope this helps, numpty!!

The above is very liberal with the truth. Reve is correct - Tony Ryan founded Ryanair. Cathal is his son. He was in fact a pilot for Ryanair at one stage.

Would help if you knew the facts before dismissing others.

Oscars Well was on Thursday withdrawn from the Grade 1 Evening Herald Champion Novice Hurdle at the Punchestown festival. Trainer Jessica Harrington said at her open day less than two weeks ago that the Neptune Novices' Hurdle fourth would drop in trip for the 2m event on Tuesday for which he was favourite, but he was missing from the field of 11 left in atthe five-day stage. Oscars Well still holds an entry in Friday's 2m4f Grade 1 Cathal Ryan Memorial Champion Novice Hurdle, for which the five-day entry stage closes at noon on Monday. I also had a punt on him for that race. A kick in the groin !

Please dont tell me he's going for the 2m 4f? This is bollox if that is the case
Report thefly10 April 28, 2011 7:03 PM BST
I'm afraid he is going for the 2m4f race SJ. The champion novice hurdle was the original plan weeks ago but connections must be running scared of something in the race.
