In a season when several consolation races elsewhere have failed to fill, or had to be scrapped completely, Ayr is most unlikely to have a similar issue as no fewer than 171 horses were confirmed for the Gold Cup on Monday.
And it is also bucking the trend for small fields as there are 201 runners in the 16 races for which declarations have already been made and not one single-figure line-up. Managing director David Brown said: "This is the top Flat meeting in Scotland and it's traditionally been viewed as an occasion to kick your shoes off at the end of the season and people want to have a bit of fun on the west coast of Scotland. We provide a broad range of races which are clearly attractive to owners and trainers. "And there is an appeal about winning the Silver Cup and the Bronze Cup – they are competitive races with prestige in their own right. They are not seen as consolation races and I don't call them that – the Silver Cup is a £60,000 televised race on a Saturday." But Brown is not expecting attendances to be so healthy and said: "The death of the Queen will have an effect and we've found that our crowds have been challenging across the board this year, as they are at every racecourse and for reasons that have been well documented elsewhere. "I think our crowd will be down on last year, although our attendance was up 12 months ago as the floodgates had just opened after the ending of restrictions." https://www.racingpost.com/news/latest/i-still-thought-it-was-sunday -jim-goldie-fails-to-confirm-ayr-sprint-runners/578818 |
