As promised the "official" thread which we will use for the 3 fortnightly rounds
First of all welcome to our one new player, posy. I don't think he has played for any other team in this Comp before, but I'm sure he will let me know if I'm wrong.
So our team in order of seniority (date of joining not age) is

Lampus
salmon spray
smirnoff2therescue ( slightly tweaked )
the dealer
hoof hearted
TheNorfolkMafia
GLASGOWCALLING
posy

As all of you, except perhaps posy, (I thought it best not to tell him ) know,we finished well clear of the field late last year when this Comp was revived after many years. Unfortunately we were clear at the wrong end of the field      Sad
I'm not going to pretend we did well but it may not have been quite as bad as it looked, there was some surprisingly heavy scoring from other teams. Anyway historically the Humbugs have been much better than that and I am looking for a much improved performance particularly as we are up in trip, the last edition was a bit of a sprint.
I will give a shortish team talk later on today when I have thought what to say.

Right. I'm aware this is not a team of novices so I'm not going to tell you how to pick, except to say that we are here to win this and whilst 1-7 shots might well get us a mid-table finish that is pointless. I'm not forbidding odds-on shots anymore than 50-1s but personally I think in between is the way forward.
Just a couple of things about the rules where they are different from the Naps Comp. Firstly you CAN bet in France as well as GB and Ireland but nowhere else. Secondly there is no 1 hour rule. As long as your selection is posted before the official off-time that is OK.And of course you can bet e/w as well as win only. Up to you,I tend to vary it depending on the race, the price and the situation in the comp.
It is vital we use all 8 selections each week. Normally that will mean one each every week on any day. If you KNOW you will not be available for a whole week please let me know well in advance and I will ask for a volunteer to use the wildcard. In case of problems I am usually around on Saturdays to sort things out if somebody doesn't turn up. Remember that on Saturdays you HAVE to post by 3.00 and if I haven't heard anything by 2.45 I will assume you are AWOL and arrange a wildcard. That all went smoothly last time so hopefully it will this.
OK Humbugs. Let's sock it to 'em in the words of one of my favourite TV shows which Lampus,Norfolk and probably one or two others will remember.

salmon please can you explain how the comp works....i'm puzzled by the 8 selections a week;does this imply each team player selects one horse a week and posts it on this thread ? Or do we all select each day ? As you see i'm confused !

Sorry posy. I was a bit hesitant to go through everything as the rest are old hands. We pick one per week EACH making eight in all. You can pick on any day from Sunday onwards through to Saturday. When the comp starts undecided will put up a selections thread and you put your selection on there. I also ask people to put them on this thread so it's easy to know where we stand. I THINK what I have put in my previous post covers everything else, but don't hesitate to ask if there is still anything you are unclear about. Kick off is not till Sunday so there is plenty of time for you to be clear what you are doing.

A couple of things that did arise last time which it might be worth mentioning. You can pick duplicates as long as it's a member of another team that has picked it first and not one of your own teammates. You CAN pick a different horse in the same race as your teammates,so we can have 2 or 3 goes at the Grand National if anybody really wants to pick in that impenetrable (these days)handicap.

Showing your age Lampus.
I remember my grandfather telling me about a horse called Freddie coming 2nd to the Yank   Silly

The following year Freddie finished second to Anglo.
We complain about bookmaker prices nowadays;in 1966 Freddie started at 11/4 in a field of 47 and those were the days when the National had proper fences !

I've got a feeling he was genuinely backed down on the day, with money pouring in from the shops. There were still a lot of Freds around then.
