After late Newcastle abandonment is it time for inspections routine to change?

The abandonment of Newcastle’s meeting this afternoon — and the fixture was called off this afternoon — is an unhappy state of affairs.

Clerks of the course, when deciding to hold further inspections after the initial check of conditions, speak of giving a card “every chance”.

That’s fair enough, but when an inspection is put back once or twice to around the 12pm mark, it’s my take that officials must be near-as-damnit certain the meeting will go ahead.

Newcastle’s clerk of the course James Armstrong decided to have an impromptu look at the track at 9am today, after a colder-than-expected night at Gosforth Park.

Nothing wrong with that — Armstrong, like the rest of us, depends on the weathermen for his information, and it sounds like they got their sums wrong.

But for racing to be called off at 12.15pm after a third inspection shows us in a poor light.

Trainers, owners, jockeys and punters would surely have already been at Newcastle by the time the bell tolled — the first race was scheduled for 12.30pm.

A trainer has no recourse to compensation in such circumstances, and has to bear the costs of travel himself.

I wonder whether it’s time to take the decision out of the clerks’ hands, if only to remove the suspicion of a vested interest.

Independent British Horseracing Authority course inspectors wouldn’t feel the weight of a track’s top brass to ensure a meeting goes ahead.

So perhaps they are in the best position to make the call.
