There would appear to be a 5 day break for the Flat, Sun 21st March - Thursday 25th inclusive, so that will leave (if my maths is right and noting the other 4 blank Sundays), 30 days and 31 meetings (Lingfield and Newcastle on Good Friday).

GEORGE.B,

I think my score should read 521.2!

Report GEORGE.B • March 20, 2021 11:06 PM GMT

TheNorfolkMafia, thanks for pointing out the error.

Such an error might have been picked up by the total points awarded showing an excess of 1, but it wasn't because an error was also made on Macintoshmatty's score. Thankfully such mistakes are rare, it must have been the shock of winning this evening's contest!

*** Congratulations to TheNorfolkMafia ***

*** 2020/21 AW Competition Champion ***

A big well done to TheNorfolkMafia who is crowned champion for a record third time and now gets to keep the trophy for good!

Former champion Billposter did really well to keep the pressure on TNM until inside the final week, managing to reach 500 points on the final day, and on this sort of form a second title can surely fall Billposter's way.

Last season's champion lux makes it into the top three again.

The ultra-consistent posy finishes fourth overall, and would have finished closer but for missing the early part of the season.

An excellent second half of the season for dukeofpuke saw him make great strides up the table to end up finishing fifth.

Lockup, who won last year's Big Meeting Comp on the Flat, also made good headway up the table in the second half of the season to finish sixth.

Suffolkpunch scored over 400 points and finishes seventh.

Former champions cosmik debris and pumphol both finish in the overall top 10 again, along with Macintoshmatty.

stewarts rise, who wasn't a regular player, and Roy (PAT'S PLAYTHING) who started the comp so late that he didn't even want to be included in the overall scoring, both did really well to score nearly 400 points.

Bluenose7 was in a strong position for a top three finish when he was stopped taking part. I hope all's well and we see bluenose again soon.

Thanks to everyone for taking part.

I'm going to try not to get banned this year and thus be in at the start 21/22 if George can be persuaded to give it yet another year !

Thanks George for all your effort and hard work, can't believe I was leading this in December, 1st page, well done Norfolk and all at the top of table.
Don't know what others think but personally I feel may be need to change the scoring system as seems daft getting same points for an 11/10 winner as a 6/1 shot, makes it too easy to go for the shortest priced horses and 2nd fav when theirs an odds on Shot, just 1/2 pt difference.
See what others think.

Report TheNorfolkMafia • April 5, 2021 10:19 AM BST

stewarts rise

Very many thanks!

Report GEORGE.B • April 5, 2021 10:28 AM BST

stewarts, the points system was already in place when I joined, but you make a valid point about an 11-10 winner being treated the same as a 6-1 winner.

I guess the counterargument would be the rules apply to all and people are free to use the rules to their advantage.

Perhaps someone with time on their hands could back through all the meetings (the links have been included with the updated tables on this thread) and see who'd win if we had scored it solely on winners and at SP, but I suspect TNM would still be the winner!

Report lux • April 8, 2021 12:00 AM BST

I have to agree with Stewarts that changing the scoring would be an improvement. Personally I think 10 x SP a winner and 3 X SP an industry place (no differentiation between 2nd and 3rd) would be optimal and fairest. That’s not a moan btw, i’m grateful and will continue to play (forum bans notwithstanding

) just feel that while the current scoring has a certain charm it does act as a great leveller by massively favouring short price picks.

Report PAT'S PLAYTHING • April 9, 2021 11:25 AM BST

Lux--on your scoring a 11/10 winner would score 11 points--instead of 7
a 25/1 would score 250 points instead of 28

Think that is a bit of a drastic change--BUT I do agree the gap between 11/10 and 6/1 does seem too big

Report posy • April 9, 2021 2:49 PM BST

I do think it important to keep the scoring 'simple' and maybe a solution would be to extend the half points threshold to 3/1 from the current Evens.

Report TheNorfolkMafia • April 9, 2021 3:34 PM BST

"You can't be serious man, you cannot be serious!"

Report lux • April 9, 2021 3:50 PM BST

Pat

It is drastic comparatively speaking but it is perfectly “neutral” (fav longshot bias notwithstanding) as it doesn’t favour any particular price band and is tied to a multiplier of SP. You could further simplify it in terms of 1xSP a winner and 0.3xSP a place. Adding the zero in my initial example just makes it easier to compute.

The major problem with the current scoring is that big price picks are massively underscored eg a 100/1 SP worth 20/1+ a place ISP or betfair would be awarded 4 points for placing 3rd.

So, 4 points for a 20/1+ winner and 7 points for an 11/10 winner. That’s the main problem.

Just my ha’pennies worth. Enjoy playing irrespective. Cheers.

Report lux • April 9, 2021 4:30 PM BST

I think it was the scoring method used in the Telegraphs annual Cheltenham comp, not my idea, blame them ...

Report cosmik debris • April 10, 2021 1:09 PM BST

I think the key is to keep the scoring simple otherwise George would be spending all of his waking hours tallying up the scores. I think the only change I would make is to give 7 points for an evens or odds on shot. They don't always win and it might deter people from putting up big price alternatives for the place points. I've never really understood the logic of cutting the number of points by half if an evens or odds on pick gets in the frame.

Report Macintoshmatty • April 12, 2021 4:35 PM BST

Could we not just make Norfolk give us all a start, say about 2 months??

Just an idea!
