That's terrible Shane. I'm so sorry. Why do they always do it in December? Saves on Christmas bonuses I suppose.

What was the minor offence and aren't they by law supposed to give you a written warning first? Or have you run out of warnings?

As for a possible reason . . . age? If you've been there 20 years then you cost more to employ than a nipper. Could just be the economic climate? And looking for any old excuse to shed some of the workforce?

No warnings at all, not even verbal. As for the reason, god only knows. I even kept quiet and was respectful when i went for my hearing.

That must be a really nasty shock to the system after working in the same place for 20 years.

Let it sink in over the weekend and when you wake up on Monday morning you'll realise that you're free at last. You can't see it now but something good will come of it. It always does.

20 years is a long time all employers must have a Contract of employment by law (though they only have to show you it on request) All contracts of employment should have a grievance procedure in it.
Usually if its not anything serious  1st   being verbal 2nd being written 3rd dismissal if this procedure has not been followed correctly you have grounds for unfair dismissal.
If in union get in touch with officials, if not get in touch with citizen advice. 20 years service (robbing ba*****)
Whatever you decide ring them up Monday anyway and tell them you are going to an industrial tribunal for unfair dismissal.
Now go and get Pis*** and have a think about it after racing tomorrow.

That sounds a complete disgrace.  I was sacked once without any prior verbal or written warnings for allegedly being unhelpful to a visitor. This was by the managing director. I said nothing at the time knowing they were wrong. I appealed and got my job back after six weeks, all fully paid. The director was re located far far away.
Don't let them get away with it, even if you may feel like you don't want to return there.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

petemac is right. If they are an employer of any size they will have a disciplinary procedure.
I presume you are not in a union?

I think Unite still have their Regional Office in Leeds. If you don't get decent service in Sheffield get on to them. I was a shop steward quite a long time ago for Nalgo/Unison and Sheffield was always a backwater. I don't believe things have changed much.
