PREMIER DIVISION SATURDAY 14th

Spirit Of Adjisa will carry top weight in the William Hill Lanzarote Hurdle at Kempton on Saturday.

Tim Vaughan's eight-year-old has been sparingly campaigned since his Grade One victory at Punchestown last May - once on the level and once more over hurdles.

The Philip Hobbs-trained Featherbed Lane is just 1lb below him in the weights following two good wins this season at Ascot and Aintree.

David Pipe's Decoy was defeated by two and a quarter lengths by Featherbed Lane at Ascot, but reopposes on much better terms.

One that has been well backed this week is Swincombe Flame, trained by Nick Williams.

The Devon handler was worried she might not get into the race, but enough horses above the mare have come out to enable her to run.

Emma Lavelle runs Well Regarded, while Colin Tizzard's Ohio Gold will be partnered by the in-form Brendan Powell jnr.

Paul Nicholls saddles Domtaline and American Trilogy, while Barry Geraghty has been booked for the Dr Richard Newland-trained Act Of Kalanisi.

The unexposed Eastlake represents Jonjo O'Neill, with El Dancer set to return over hurdles following two unsuccessful runs over fences. El Dancer is, however, also engaged at Warwick on the same afternoon.

Nicky Henderson is responsible for Rajdhani Express and Busker Royal.

Paul Webber has decided against running Alasi, who will instead take up an engagement in a novice chase on the same card.


Vaughan remains bullish about Spirit Of Adjisa's chances, despite his hefty burden of 11st 12lb.

"I'm very excited about running him," said the Vale of Glamorgan handler.

"He needed the run last time at Aintree and the weather turned against us that day as well, so the ground ended up very heavy.

"Hopefully now he has that run under his belt it will have sharpened him for tomorrow and the rest of the season.

"You never really want to be top weight in a handicap like this as you're always vulnerable, but he's in great form and everything is in his favour.

"I think he should run a solid race and he looks a very big price at 25-1.

"He's a Grade One winner and he's got his handicap mark for a reason."

Pipe is responsible for the well-fancied Decoy and Buena Vista, who since the retirement of Lough Derg is not far off being the most popular horse in the yard after successive wins at the Cheltenham Festival.

"Decoy had two quick races at Cheltenham and Ascot and then we gave him a break," said Pipe.

"He won at Cheltenham and ran very well in defeat at Ascot - the winner that day (Featherbed Lane) has really franked the form.

"Obviously, we are much better off this time and while it should bring us closer to Featherbed Lane, that horse looks to be still improving.

"Buena Vista ran a bit better last time and the key to him is the ground.

"It won't be too bad at Kempton but he's still high enough in the weights so we've put Mike Ennis on him to take a few pounds off."

Hobbs believes the 7lb taken off Featherbed Lane by talented conditional James Best gives the leading fancy a better chance of completing a hat-trick.

"He's won his two races this season very well and stays well," said the Minehead handler.

"He possibly could have done with softer ground, ideally, but I'm sure he'll be fine.

"He's high in the weights, obviously, but James takes 7lb off, which is a help."

Ohio Gold has also won his last two starts, albeit at a lower level.

Tizzard said: "He's won two little races at Plumpton and Folkestone the last twice and he's shown good form in better company as well.

"He ran well at the Festival last year and on his form this season, he'd have a chance.

"Ground doesn't make any different to him."

Lavelle believes the ground, trip and track will bring out the best in Well Regarded.

"I think the ground has come perfectly for him and he schooled really well the other day," said the Andover handler.

"His work has been good and the two miles, five (furlongs) should really suit him.

"These sort of handicaps are always really competitive races, but he goes there in great order and I think he should run very well."

Dr Newland is thrilled to have secured Geraghty's services for Act Of Kalanisi, and is hopeful his charge can improve on his fine sixth in The Ladbroke.

"When this horse won at Ascot last year, he chipped a pastern and it put him out for the rest of the season," said the Worcestershire-based handler.

"He had an operation and it took him quite a long time to recover from it.

"We had one or two problems with him before The Ladbroke with him going intermittently lame and so on, but the good news is he took that race really well and has really come on for it.

"With that in mind, I would be hopeful of a very good run and I think the step up in trip will be right up his street.

"I wanted to have a good pro on him. Richard Johnson has ridden him before, but he obviously has an allegiance with Tim Vaughan.

"Barry is a pretty good substitute."
