In yesterday's write-up I wrote, >flyingbolt moves ever nearer to the podium, gaining another place today to take 6th spot, just 1p ahead of MOB<

Given that the table showed them both to be on the same total of 3.50 with MOB's name ahead of flyingbolt's, you may have thought that comment a bit strange.
Then again, it hasn't exactly been an error-free month with the table so maybe you just thought I'd lost the plot again.
Or maybe it just shows that no-one bothers to read my pearls of wisdom.

Anyway, the table published was from the Excel spreadsheet (which I now have a copy of thanks to Shanelee) and the write-up was done from my own OpenOffice spreadsheet.
There's a basic difference in rounding between the two. 13/8 is 1.625. Excel rounds it down. OpenOffice rounds it up. Hence the 1p discrepancy.

We'll stick with the Excel spreadsheet workings as that's what the other Divisions are all using.

Table to follow shortly.

The battle to avoid relegation has seen a fair bit of action recently with several players making a dash for freedom only to be recaptured and put back in the hole.

30 miscreant man has been making plans to escape recently with a couple of winners but hasn't managed to get over the fence yet.
29 Shanelee escaped a couple of weeks ago and climbed to 23rd.
28 Horny38DD escaped last week and got to 24th.
27 bosstipper made it all the way to 14th from last place in one giant leap.
26 IntheGroove has only had one day in the fresh air, getting to 23rd on Tuesday.
25 age 21 made it 2 in a row yesterday to stay in the sunlight at 25th for the second day running.
24 undecided has been a quivering mass of indecision all month, constantly hovering between 21st and 25th.
23 Ming_The_Merciless has been in and out of jail in the last few days and escapes again with a 2/1 winner.
22 majorupshotbagley is enjoying his 6th day on the outside with the same 2/1 winner.
21 elvissss, who hasn't been higher than 9th, is only 2.52 away from being captured.

That's the bottom third of the table and it's a great battle. Good luck to all of you.

The battle for promotion continues to be hard fought. DFCIRONMAN has surely put the title beyond reach though, following yesterday's excellent 14/1 winner. Fantastic tipping once again.

But there are still 4 other podium places up for grabs:
Winners yesterday for look it's snowing and cannyman help to make the task of the chasing pack that much harder. And MOB jumps back into 5th with a 2/1 winner.
Ashmal and flyingbolt both fail to complete their hattricks and drop away slightly, while unluckyStu has come storming through to take 7th place with an 8/1 winner. Great napstering!
learning thegame was the other winner of the day with a 2/1 shot which puts him within easier reach of those coveted promotion slots.

Best of luck everyone for the final 2 days.

Further to that rounding mystery, it appears that by default both Excel and OpenOffice round up an exact 0.5, 0.05 etc.

The Excel spreadsheet that we use for settling however, rounds up 15/8 but rounds down 11/8 and 13/8.

I can see no immediate explanation for this discrepancy, and it's not something I'll be wasting any more time over. Happy

Report man of many moods September 29, 2011 5:47 PM BST
I'm almost sure that's what it says in the Rules (which I posted on September 1st as a reminder for everyone).

But I'm not infallible. I'll check!
Report man of many moods September 29, 2011 5:50 PM BST
3. - Selections must be made AT LEAST 1 hour before your selected race. Failure to comply will result in the selection being declared Invalid and treated as a Non Selection.

4. - Selections may be changed as long as it is BEFORE 1hr prior to original race OR if selection is a NR or deemed invalid ( Rule 3 MUST still be adhered to).
Report man of many moods September 29, 2011 5:56 PM BST
I must admit I can't think of any valid reason why anyone shouldn't be allowed to change their selection, except possibly on the final day.

I think you could make a strong case for that because someone else may have wanted to go for a selection which is later rejected by someone else. But on any other day I can't see that it gives anyone an advantage.

What are your thoughts? Why does it seem wrong to you? What have I missed?

What if say 2 or 3 days to go and two people are neck and neck for 5th place well in front of the remainder.
Forumite A tips a 3/1 shot in the 1.30
Forumite B tips a 5/1 shot in the 3.00.

Forumite A's horse gets beat.
Forumite B who is 20p behind thinks hello ,hello and changes his selection to the 1/2 good thing in the 4.30.

Alternatively Forumite A's horse wins and Forumite B who is 20p in front changes his selection to the same horse.

Still think it's a good rule ?
Report flyingbolt September 29, 2011 7:37 PM BST
Sorry meant to say changes to horse likely to start at same price.
Report Ashmal September 29, 2011 8:03 PM BST
Mr Bolt that is why I asked before racing began today but I can see where you are coming from however as an example of why I was asking

Forumite A was on + 10.00 and put up his selection first

Then

Forumite B who was on + 10.50 copies Forumite A's selection

What chance would Forumite A have of overtaking Forumite B??

Mathmatics I'm afraid (esp the last few days of any month) and whilst I was out this afternoon I got a call to say "Yes" you can change if done within the time/rules etc. However a further call later said someone was saying it seemed wrong! Because of this  I decided to leave things as they were on this occasion.

Your example I understand however I assumed that if the change was made BEFORE the first race or indeed as your example shows BEFOREthe obvious "Other" forumite's (Mathmatics again) selection ran then I could'nt see any problem?

Can you see my side of the coin also as they say?

Good luck and thanks to you and MOMM for your response's
Report man of many moods September 29, 2011 8:25 PM BST
A good rule? Now you're putting words into my mouth. Grin

What I basically said was I couldn't see anything wrong with it. There's a difference. To be honest I'm fairly ambibalent about it and I'll tell you why.
I've considered the scenario you described above before (I'm sure most of us have) and there's really no way round it other than 'sealed' selections sent by email.

This is because in that scenario, if there was a 'No Change' Rule then there's nothing to stop either player waiting to see what their rival selects (and waiting for the outcome) before posting their own selection.
I suppose if both players were really determined not to give their rival that advantage then you'd have the rather ludicrous situation of both of them waiting until 5 seconds before one hour before the last race of the day before posting. (and hope the forum clock agrees with their computer's clock!)
I appreciate that a lot of people don't have access to a computer every hour of the day and have no choice but to post their selections well in advance, which is why the only way to stop the scenario you described is by selections being emailed to the settler rather than posted on the forum. Which of course is equally ludicrous.

So with or without the Rule, what you described can still easily happen. It makes no difference whether they post and then change, or just simply wait for the outcome of their rival's selection. Either way they still gain an advantage.

On balance, I think that there's no good reason not to allow selection changes. There are many legitimate reasons other than trying to gain an advantage why someone might want to change their selection, so not to allow it would be somewhat draconian in my opinion.

There's also the point that the vast majority of us all play this competition in the correct spirit and wouldn't be so devious as to try and gain that advantage (although I've no doubt it happens from time to time).

Perhaps I should add that this competition is nothing to do with me; I'm just a player and a temporary Div2 settler. So these are just my personal observations.
If you or anyone else feels strongly that any Rule needs amending then you need to speak to whoever's in charge.

That's not me, and it never will be. Happy
Report kenny mann September 29, 2011 8:49 PM BST

I've actually thought of that in the past when a close rival was delaying his selection.
