say what you like about quality, tonight was fascinating stuff if you are fiancially involved and totally gripping if you are heavily involved, like me. here are my views
matt
i disagree with many forumites here, as i honestly thought this was wonderful; suited his voice perfectly, and just the right level of emotion. thought his voice held up well and personally i thought it was his best performances since britney/travis.
Duet with rihanna - what an absolute disaster. rihanna towered over him physically and vocally, making him look like a little hunch-shouldered twerp dwarf, and you dont see too many twerp dwarfs around these days. the faux electricity was forced and as inappropriate as a woody allen film where the ageing director gets the young girl. the fact he barely sang was academic.
Conclusion - still by far the likeliest winner esp after a v strong first performance. matt fans have to hope the duet is forgotten as quickly as bird flu and steve brookstein.

i have lost count of the number of times i have finished watching a rebecca performance and just wished she had given it a little more oompph. i am now reconciled to the fact she isnt going to, and so my view, as ever, is that she was classy, sophisticated, in posession of a great voice, but is destined to come up a little short. and why do all scousers, even rebecca adn the 6 year old girl interviewed in the go to liverpool live bit, sound exactly like steven gerrard.
Duet - this was the penalty kick, the final chance to wrest it away from matt, and i think she totally outsung christina, who looked like a barrel of bitter in a blonde wig. problem is, there was no chemistry at all, aguiilera was there to sell her new record, and as they walked off did you see how disinterested christina looked. i dont think this helped rebecca at all.
Conclusion - i am now pretty sure rebecca will not win....this news will be met with disdain by lay professional and his various alter egos, but it's resoundingly the case. it is going to be a case of what if....anyway a good career beckons

I have yo yo'ed on this lot so much i am boring the tits off myself, and tonight proved that whatever people say about them, they are going to be v v big. their first song was good without being brilliant, but what struck me was the way cowell has opened up big pockets of voting potential for them with 4 cities plus ireland, and this marketing of them individually gives them plenty of clout.
Duet - i expect a lot of ridicule here but i thought this was probably by far the biggest vote winning performance of the night. gurning rob looks more ridiculous each year but he connected with the band and the public;the song choice was just right, and i think this was job well done by cowell. the irish kid is an annoying little bouncey p rick, mind....
Conclusion - i am convinced they now priovde the only danger to matt, and i think that a win, whilst unlikely, is now not impossible. i really rreally hope not, or i'm off to tower bridge.....

Thought she did ok, and actually i thought she sounded better rapping than singing, an opinion backed up by her duet. the gypo comments were shown to be hokum by the vt of her in malvern, hardly a prime residence for the traveller community.....
Duet - Will i am - what a c unt
Conclusion - she was always going to go tonight, but actually i thought she did well, and it will be interesting to see what cowell has in store for her and ringy dingies.

I agree with alot of what you said except 1 direction. I just think they were so unbeleivably average. That Liam guy was totally out of tune and as a group they're just so weak on their vocals. The performance with Robbie was a travesty in my eyes. Sounded like an average karaoke performance and all that hugging at the end was so cringe and just seemed desperate. The only way they will get the votes is through teeny bopper girls who scream so much throughout the performance that they don't actually hear any of the singing but i don't think it'll be enough to beat all those voters actually voting for the winner based on talent.

I can't believe I'm going to write this,but I thought Cher was by far the best performer on the night.She also came across as more humble in her losers interview,unfortunately for her too little too late. Of the remaining 3 I felt Rebecca was the big loser on the night.Tepid first performance,and I have to disagree with you slightly on her duet,where I felt she looked over-awed by Christana. Matt's 1st song was quite forgetable I felt,however his duet with Rianna whilst enjoyable was slightly comical as she looked like a dominatrix with a subersive client. One Direction again had a good trap draw,the first songs vocal failings were masked by a full-on stage production,and the duet with Robbie whilst cringeworthy ,may have captured some extra votes. I'm guessing that Finals Week has a vastly different voting demographic than the other weeks,as there must be lots of people who only vote this time.Whether this is enough to alter the supposed lead Matt has, I don't know. Good Luck with your bets, as you know my original bet on 1D has been traded for a no-lose bet,and win or break even I've had a good run for my dough and I've enjoyed the opinions and banter. hemsby [smiley:crazy] |

Cher was easily the best last night, putting in two excellent and original performances.
Rebecca was dire and boring as usual, she didn't even duet ... she just stood there staring at Aguilera while liquid sh1t dribbled down her leg. Cardle was completely useless and 1D were slightly better. Unfortunately the great British PUBIC are tone deaf, boring, racist old mf's. Good on you Cher, you will have the best career out of all of them. God, I can't stand that Rebecca. The way she stands during interview is reminiscent of someone trying to hold in a large turd ... but she is from Liverpool I suppose. Rant over. Time to go and prepare the altar. |

I don't think her song choice was important.
She would have been going home anyway whatever she sang ... the public don't like her despite her obvious talent. Now we are stuck with two boring 20 somethings going on 50 ( 65 in Rebecca's case ) and a bunch of cradle fodder. Rumour has it that 1D will sing in their strollers tonight. |

I think it was a lacklustre final, the song choices poor (just too ballad heavy) and the duets verging on the pointless. For me, they're all riding on the fanbase they have already accrued.
Matt - great homecoming VT, esp his dear old Dad. He's obviously been ill for a good few weeks now and needs a massive rest before the tour. I don't like Dido's songs so it didn't do anything for me. The duet was a bit cringey, but in hindsight probably not so bad after all. I think he could have done an excellent Broken Strings (or maybe a totally different sort of performance with someone like fellow Essex boys Scouting For Girls), and I think it's disappointing he has always had female songs. He could have done a good job with James Morrison, David Gray, Ray Lamontagne, etc. He did well to get a lot of early support and they've stuck with him. Rebecca - another great VT. She seemed overawed by the whole occasion which is a mix of endearing and frustrating. The first song was too dull and she would have been better with another belter of a club song. The duet would have been better with just Rebecca. Christina had no interest in being part of a duet and Rebecca was just overawed. Another act just dependent on the fanbase she already has. OD - did what they've always done with the first song. For me none of the first songs from the first three acts were in any way memorable. The duet was a bit shambolic (like a Dad with his kids) but guess Robbie fans, OD fans, Mums and kids would lap it all up. For me, I think the British guests for the duets are better value for money - more warmth and appreciation/knowledge of the show and the contestants (also sucking up to SCowell, they might need a job). Cher was probably in a better place nerves wise due to the fact she was expecting to go out first and had nothing to lose so could really go for it rather than Matt paralysed with illness and Rebecca paralysed with fear. The first song was fun and entertaining for Saturday night TV. Think it could have worked better with just the Shirley Ellis track alone. Likewise the duet, although Will I Am looked a bit of a d!ck and she could probably have done it better alone. Not really the sort of stuff to get her a load of new voters though. |

And LOL at good old Matt slating all the tears and sob stories a few weeks back - he's all over the front page of one of the Sunday rags "doing it for his dead Mum". I think she's the Mum of his adopted brothers, not his own Mum.
I think I noticed other headlines with more stuff about Cher's tantrums and attitude which seems a bit pointless now. Give the kid a break. |

Cher clearly the best pop star. best perfomer, best actress, best diva. she shouldnt be horrible to those working for her though. But Cher will be the one still around in 5 years.

Once again I agree with your review Nick, although I think you over-state Matt's performance. Average at best for me, but Rebecca failed to take advantage.
This was One Direction and Cher's night - but it came to late to save Cher. It could well be enough to propel One D into second place - but whether or not it's enough to win, we'll have to wait and see. I doubt it - and very much hope not. But Matt's in need of a big night to give it a final surge. |

As regards the duets from a voter point of view OD were streets ahead. Robbie is still amazingly popular and he managed to engage fully with OD which is crucial in the duets.
Christina (and Rihanna to a lesser extent) just didn't really look that happy to be there - like they really wanted their own slot only. Cher managed to boss her duet with Will.I.Am and from a musical point of view was the best, but just didn't expand her appeal at all. All said I wouldn't be surprised if the duets were ditched for the next XF whenever that may be. |

I do think that Rihanna was far more generous with Matt than Christina was with Rebecca, although neither duet really sparkled.
The false sexual chemistry in Unfaithful was cringeworthy, while Rebecca was over-awed by her singing partner. This was a real shame, as I think the song worked OK for her and she was performing it well until Christina came on stage. It just didn't work as a duet and their voices jarred rather than blending together. Of course Robbie and One D was chaotic and a bit shambolic, but I think that's why people like him (not me, I hasten to add, can't stand him) and I can see it going down well with the teenies and yummy mummys alike. Having slated Cher all series long, she was brilliant last night. I finally got it. She was certainly the only one of the finalist who 'performed' as opposed to just singing - and I can definitely see her having a career. |

I thought Cher gave the best performance by far last night. Squares made a good point that she had nothing to lose so you could argue it was easier for her last night to just go out and enjoy herself.
I have to say cher i find Cher very emotionless and cold when i see her interviewed but when she gets on stage she seems fearless and very self assured. I think she has most potential for future success. Well, excluding 1 Direction who will sadly for my liking probably have success more because of their good lucks more than anything. I find Cowells choice of the irish lad for this group a bit strange. He stands out as not being very good lokking and comes acrosss as very annoying. |

That ICM poll was taken before last night, agrees with the YouGov poll. Odd that The Sun should hire YouGov and their sister paper NOTW should hire ICM to do the same poll at the same time. I doubt one knows what the other is doing.

Matt's homecoming VT when Coldplay's "Fix You" was on and Matt's dad was trying to hold back the tears. That's what seals the deal in these shows. |

Feel sorry for Becca, best act in this and personally thought CA was wholly to blame for the horrible duet. Cardle's won it though, polls and feedback really good and I thought he was horrific on the night. Not as confident as I was mind you but can't lay at this price.

Have to agree with Zoom on this one. No chemistry, no generosity, Christina the diva was just there for the money and to promote her new film... Not interested in Rebecca in the slightest, in fact went out of her way to upstage her.
