By:
topgun, can i ask, when you were playing yorkshire juniors in 1983, was that u12, u14, u16 or u18s?
By:
we may know each other....
By:
come on topgun mate, tell me your age
By:
u14s used to train ilkley and b4 that teesside airport;what about u
By:
wow ok so you were U14's yorkshire in 1983????
i was u14 yorkshire champion in 1983. the yorkshire u14 team in that year was me, simon frieze, damien taylor, peter caddies, and i was even the captain. i also played for the U16 team as an U14, including richard hutchison, richard abel, david drake, paul ransom. richard hutchison played at ilkley, training under simon ickringill. i also played the northern champs in 1983 at teeside airport, where i was coached for a while by terry mabutt (think it was mabutt) and i won it twice, including that year, beating durham's andy reed in the final. that was north east, north west and north midlands leading players coming together. that was the tournament that saw me ranked no.1 in the north of england at exactly that age. i won the yorkshire champ at ypi in hull four times, from U14 to U18 level... so mate, if you were playing juniors for yorkshire u14s in 1983, i will know you..... |

This is a really bizzarre coincidence - I'm originally from Ilkley myself, and used to play a fair bit at Ilkley tennis club in the 80's too! Unfortunately I was absolutely rank bad compared to you guys
was just a local player who used the courts a lot, but I did enter the juniors in the Ilkley tennis tournament for a few years (and got thrashed most years) - first year I entered (U13's) I could barely play the game, and got paired with John Fenby with my grandparents watching me 'play' Needless to say 6-0 6-0 (think I got a couple of points) ensued! Got a little better in following years, and won a few sets in the Ilkley Open juniors but never past first round...you guys were good! Funny to get a flashback like this on here though. |
By:
topgun - you from Ilkley too?
By:
This is fascinating - all we need is Eamonn with the big red book

not from ilkley shrewdbury used to get coaching there with simon ickringill for a while;my head was never on tennis tho;always on racing
By:
Remember Ickringill well - he was the coach for a long time while I was playing there. Bit of a poser iirc though! Not sure whether he's still there, would guess not these days? I also went to school with Gary Henderson who you mentioned earlier - he was in my year at Ilkley Grammar, and yes he did seem to get good at tennis really quickly. Think he was american originally? Blasts from the past...
By:
yeah practised with gary a few times way above me tho;one of nicest chaps i ever met playing junior tennis
By:
arrogant??? oh dear, i hope not, though to be honest i was a bit of a c unt, thought i ruled the world...
did we ever chat then topgun? or play cards? who were your friends from ilkley? |
By:
least ur honest;only ever remember playing cards with gary henderson once in hull;i remember u playing a lad in first round at hull one year and screaming im playing a ball machine lol;remember his name????
By:
i screamed 'i'm playing a ball machine??' no, i dont recall, was it the hulls or the yorkshires...
did i lose? |
