I think it’s appropriate because of some of the stories this week that I personally explained why we made certain decisions on The X Factor this year.
It’s always our sole intention to try and make the show as entertaining and hopefully exciting every week. Our main focus is to ensure that the contestants are given every opportunity to benefit from being on the show and show their talent.
Throughout the series I have met with fans of the show on a regular basis and have listened and acted on their feedback. I believe they have enjoyed the changes in the show this year and I feel it’s been a better series as it hasn’t followed the same pattern as before.
This year we decided to give four contestants a second chance and introduce them as wild card entrants on the first live show. And having 16 finalists rather than just 12 meant that we introduced both single and double eliminations.
We decided for the first time some weeks ago to put four people into the final and this meant having five semi-finalists. We also felt it would be fairer that there would be a sing-off rather than automatic elimination as there were more contestants. I understand new decisions are seen as controversial by our viewers but it stops the show becoming boring. As the excitement heats up, debates begin but I do want to assure people that the show is definitely not fixed.
The sing-off on Sunday was something that was always going to happen regardless of who was in the bottom two. The contestants all prepared their save-me songs on Monday last week. It was always going to be sad for whoever left.
The reason this show has been so popular I believe is primarily because of the talent and the passion the viewers feel for the show. It’s only the viewers’ vote that can keep their favourite in.
I have always listened to and respected our viewers and have always believed viewers ultimately make the right decision. I hope the viewers trust the show that this is a fair competition. Without the viewers there wouldn’t be an X Factor.
I genuinely believe this weekend’s final is the most open and could be the most exciting yet. All four contestants are incredibly talented. Our job is to ensure the viewers can watch a star-studded final, we will always be fair and respect our viewers. It’s your show.

Cher is too young and 'in the eye of the hurricane' to understand the risks Cowell took to protect her future last week,
but once she's 18 or 19 she'll properly appreciate the nuances and will probably be pretty loyal to him as a result. If things go well I can imagine her having a 'independent' label of her own distributed by syCo. we shall se. |

why did louis say on irish radio it was a public vote why on the itv listings and also the x-factor web site it said depart by public vote. who is realy going to fall for S Cowells bull ( the public, you will never go broke over estimating how thick the public are ) |

That letter is a load of bull, if they wanted a sing off fine, but announce it before people start voting not after lines are closed. People from Ireland thought they were voting to get Mary above Cher, very achievable as she had been bottom 2 a fortnight ago, but in fact they had to get her above Cher plus one of the big 3 - a totally different proposition. That letter has wound me right up, I might even complain to Ofcom now.

That's why there was such a huge backlash in the papers here imo. Everybody here who voted, Mary, Louis, the papers, radio & tv, were all under the impression that it was a straight forward PV. Made the papers in particular look rather stooopid, hence the lash at Cowell. They all carried the number to ring for Mary. Irish NOTW Editor came straight out and encouraged people to put Mary in the final and vote for her ffs. No way even the red tops would have placed themselves as pawns in the Cowell game of chess had they known it was a sing off. And important to remember that the whole hype surrounding X Factor is dependent on their coverage it. They defo feel duped here and that Cowell has overstepped the mark. |
