having showed so much promise, this year's x factor is becoming a serious disappointment. so many of them have flattered to deceive, and imo the winner is going to be the one who can be the least bad....

matt
trying to snatch a defeat from the jaws of victory, judged by his ill advised mouthing off again this week and his poor performances tonight. shouldnt have any trouble reaching the final anyway, but might be mildly concerned by a potential hardening in cowell's attitude, as well all know how easy it is to nobble a candidate in the final. i thought his voice quite suited you've got the love, though it was obviously strained through illness, and the billy joel song just seemed pedestrian without him playing the piano. fortunately for matt, the others failed to close the gap, still by far the likeliest winner, unless he calls the queen a c unt in midweek and tries to stick his johnson in sinitta's ear

mary
sounds more and more like a cruise ship singer every week, and cant be helped by the fact that it's obvious from the slots and the comments (cowell v cunningly trying to push back the votes by claiming she has 'made it' already) that the judges want her gone. on the plus side, the tears will have helped (even little ratboy ray quinn made the final on the back of a larychmose moment) and there is a chance the sentimental vote could save her, especially if the tabloids made good with their promise to post the numbers in the papers to help the irish. it might just be my cynical nature, but i think the tears were, if not crocodile, then at least planned. in terms of quality, mary is a long long way below the others, but there remains a small chance that the rags to riches story arc could see her into 4th place rather than 5th. should be 500s to win. the people who backed her at 5s after the first week should paint their ballbags green and white in shame

rebecca
i have lost track of the times the VT for rebecca says 'this could be a spine tingling moment' but then the performance, though good, doesnt quite live up to the expectation. despite the eulogies from the judges, which make think she isnt 100 per cent safe, i think they are probably also feeling just so slightly underwhelmed too. she sang show me love beautifully, but looked oh so strange standing there like a lone plank of wood in a grey garage. and amazing grace sounded good, but since when was good good enough. dont mention leon jackson - he wasnt good. i am fully convinced she has peaked, i dont see any reason why she should have anything left to show, and although she will definitely have a solo career, i cant see how she can get enough votes to win. i think she is more likely to go out in fifth than win. i may even lay off all my green in her, even at 6.8

cher
bewildering performances as usual, although as a 40 year old bloke with a dislike of rap i feel about as qualified to comment on her as rolf harris is on picasso. but in the context of voting, i cant see in a million years how she can muster the mainstream vote to take her into the top three. personally i find her arrogant and irritating in equal measure and will be happy if i never ever see her twattish, gurning face ever again. both performances merged into one long pouting, sneering pot pourri of monumental terrapin turd

one d
if anyone was in any doubt about how one d have been doing, then tonight will have proved conclusively that they havent been voting well. the pimp slot, heavily ott comments, a vt made for the sympathy vote, an emotional classic like chasing cars....the list goes on. how cowell has been allowed to get away with the backing track drowning their voices is beyond me, but there is about as much chance of them going out in fifth as there is of me becoming pope. let's face it, they look great, they sound ok (with the backing singers especially) and given the right kind of ballad, like say westlife, they'll sell lots of records. having backed them heavily pre show they are now losers for me, and i am concerned about another pimp slot and a duet with take that. having said that, they really shouldnt have enough vote gathering potential to beat matt. likely second place beckons.

I agree, One Dimension are getting very very boring already. And the only one that can actualy sing Rebbecca, is being drowned out by acts, with loud backing tracks and lots of jigging about. Then again it is Simons circus afterall.

Spot on.  I share your disappointment - I thought tonight's show was the worst of the series so far.

I haven't changed my opinion on the finishing order, which is in line with yours:

1 - Matt
2 - One Direction
3 - Rebecca
4 - Cher
5 - Mary

Dull, boring, but sadly predictable.

after tonight for me it comes down to matts voice next week, if it gets better (good chance) he wins if not rebecca wins, the others IMO just wont get enough votes, they are starting from to low a base and are to poor.cher mary and 1D have no more gears.
Report stringerbell December 4, 2010 11:45 PM GMT
dizzy i think there is a good chance mary will scrape past cher to the final, but yeah apart from that we're in agreement. let's make lots of money...
Report One footed pony December 4, 2010 11:48 PM GMT
I agree mach they are poor, but One Direction are very good at kareaoki. And I'm not trying to be funny when I say that.

EXCELLENT ANALYSIS Nick (apart form Cher) . I agree she is annoyingly arrogant now. However apart from the slightly embarrasing rapping in the eminem song, I thought she showed that she is way ahead performance wise. The first number was excellent. I know what you mean about her gurning face (that needs work)however she tells a story with a song , has an excellent voice and is the one person out of them I can see having a career. I don't think Cher will win it , but for her that won't ultimately be relevant. Voting wise, I suppose Matt will probably win, however I am VERY confident that Mary will be out tomorrow night. If mary is in the bottom 2 she goes. If she isn't in the bottom 2 then it will be a shock. However Nick your write up was brilliant.
Report stringerbell December 4, 2010 11:54 PM GMT

no bottom two though, 99 per cent sure it's lowest votes goes

Nick - one thing worth following up on.  I agree that the biggest disappointment has to be Rebecca.  I think that 'Amazing Grace' was supposed to be her 'moment' - but it just didn't happen.  Total damp squib.  I'll be joining you in bailing on her I think, at least in part...

I have kept 1D on side for the reasons you state - the final will almost certainly be set up for them to do well, just like tonight.  With a Westlife ballad and Take That duet they could easily take the runner up spot, although I do agree that the double pimp slot and endless ramping shows that they have a long way to go to threaten Matt.

I'll carry on here rather than start my own this week.  By song.

1.  Rebecca.  This could have been tough but I thought it was amazing and she can obviously do this sort of stuff really well.  I still think she is too sophisticated an artist for your average XF voter.

2.  Mary.  Very karaoke.  Had this been her second song I'd say a definite goner.

3.  Matt.  The guy looks really sick and shot to pieces - a bit like Scott in SCD.  It looks like he's progressing on previous performances and fanbase now.  I didn't like the arrangement of the song but think he could have done well vocally with it if he wasn't ill.

4.  Cher.  This was OK and fine for her fans, but maybe not so good for your average XF voter.  They seem to be letting her do a lot of talking, way more than the other contestants, and it doesn't do her any favours.  She talks in that horrible sort of Katie Price monotone and looks dead behind the eyes.  She was all sweetness and light when getting good comments.

5.  OD.  Everything they do sounds the same.  Assume their fans lap it all up.  Must admit they do sound better than that gash boyband who were on the results show last week.

6.  Matt.  Looked even more ill this time round.  Once again, I'm sure he could have done a good job in full health but the vocals were painful.  He's got his work cut out with all the performances required for next Saturday and Sunday, and it looks like the fans he's built up from previous weeks will be carrying him through.

7.  Mary.  Better than the first song but a lot of duff notes along the way and timing problems.  She needs the Irish vote, the sympathy vote, the bounce, etc. to carry her through to be 4th rather than 5th.

8.  Cher.  The song was too similar to her first and too current for the average XF voter.  She can't be gaining fresh support with this sort of stuff.  Her voice was shown up to be weak and thin, nasal and droning.  Not so happy this time around with some of the poor comments either.

9.  Rebecca.  The performance of the second half of the show by a long long way (although not much to beat tbf) and could take Mary's vote with something like this.  I wouldn't have thought she's losing any support this week.

10.  OD.  This is a huge stadium anthem and really gets everyone going at the end of a Snow Patrol set.  I don't think it's ever transferred well to these sort of shows.  Andy Williams was eliminated with it a few years back, but he was cr@p anyway.  OD, however, just made it sound so dull and bland like they had no feeling for the song at all.

Very good summary of last night. Mary sounding more and more like a cruise shipper singer seems a good observation.

I thought Rebecca never lived up to the build up she got for Amazing Grace. Cherlys intro to the song did not help. She built up the song way too much. Rebecca was good but when the viewers are told they are going to be reduced to tears they can only be disappointed.

I agree with everything said about Cher. Her body language and facial expressions dont come across as very endearing, just arrogant.
Report BarnabySpears December 5, 2010 10:24 AM GMT
.cant believe her drift in the betting !

Her drift in the betting is probably due to the fact that she is so incredibly boring that she sends everyone to sleep, and when they wake up it is too late to vote for her.

God, she is so wooden.

If she had a longer nose they would call her Pinocchio.

Report laughing gravy December 5, 2010 10:59 AM GMT
I have the advantage of being tone deaf and of not beind able to hold a note. So I'll leave 'performance' analysis to others better qualified and instead, give my instinctive thoughts on last night.

Matt - I believe the guy was brave and will have won many admirers as well as consolidating his fan base. He looked really, really sick and surely could have taken a pass. I may be wrong of course, but Matt still feels like the most likely winner to me.

One Direction - their voter appeal rests on their safeness and politeness. They all look like clean, middle class boys (the kind of lads fathers wouldn't mind their daughters bringing home to Sunday lunch). There is absolutely nothing to dislike about them, but their lack of edge may count against them.

Rebecca - I thought Louis's pro-Rebecca comments did her many favours - because they were about her as person and this is a popularity contest. My gut feeling is that 'Amazing Grace' was Rebecca's chance to blow away the audience, but she didn't quite pull it off. I'm sure she is lovely, but I'm not certain she has the X-Factor.

Cher - the horrible and insulting things that some Forumites write about Cher are (unfortunately) probably reflective of the mindless hatred some viewers feel about her. I suspect there is fair bit of jealously about her as she is talented, 17 years old and (if she keeps her head) she has the world at her feet. Life and reality shows are not fair however, and although Cher would be unlucky to go tonight, it is not impossible.

Mary - I got the sense from Mary's body language that she felt she might have run her race. The partial breakdown at the end of the second song may have partly been about her mum, but there appeared to be something else behind it. Her life is going to change for the better and she will get lots of work as a result of the show, but I would look forward to Cher rather than Mary in the final.

Best Regards to All

nice to see some sanity on the forum.

Cher was just awful in the way she sneered at Danni and spoke during the interviews. But i have to confess,i went back her first song last night and it was really good. The performance for a 17 year old girl, live on a show of this size was very impressive
...but it just will not translate into big votes, maybe enough for 4th though or even 3rd.

Rebecca's first song was great but again a bit too niche for this show at the business end. When she started AG i thought she was going to finally bring the house down but once more she let her opponents off the hook.

And that's the problem,if Matt's back to even 3/4 strength next week,he has 2 or 3 options for knock out blows.
Apart from Cher's "Stay"..none of them have a song that everyone wants to hear again.
Report stringerbell December 5, 2010 11:19 AM GMT
yeah guys as i said i dont really feel qualified to discuss the quality of cher's performances, as that type of music eaves me cold, but i am entitled to have a feeling about her as a person. i know she does attract oppobrium (i feel v negative about her) and maybe some of it is unjust, but i just think she comes across as a bit of a nasty piece of work. this is nothing to do with her background etc, just an observation of her personality. i hope i am not being too led by the numerous diva stop stories emanating from the press, but it's possible i am....

Surely if TPTB were behind her all the way, they wouldn't want these pics or stories in the press and they wouldn't let her speak so much on the show.

Good post from the wily Laughing Gravy. I agree on all points except maybe re 1D.

Watching them today in the light of a cold Scottish morn, it strikes me that last night killed any momentum they had (even artificial ramped momentum) and doing Chasing Cars in the pimp slot just served to expose how unthrilling their voices are.
If there's going to be a shock tonight, I'd gancy it to involve the cheeky fivesome.

Albeit as nice as she seems, the only thing she could be World Class in is lullaby singing.

She knocked the life out of her first song and Amazing Grace, which should have been amazing given her voice, was reduced to being very boring.

She is the epitome of not having the X Factor.

One D vt about not having a mentor shows they are struggling with votes, yet Matt has a vt basically telling us he almost died of a cold this week, including scenes of him lying in bed (wtf). If 1D's VT showed they are struggling then Matt must be gone this week judging by that.

yeah it's interesting the strong reactions cher seems to attract, mine included, but what i can say with total confidence is it isnt class related. it's her contorted sneer, her facial histrionics, her 'apparent' diva-esque behaviour to production staff. i think this entitles us to take a negative view towards her, though, of course, it may be unfair and she may just be a confused kid caught in the headlights. i dont think so, though.

I agree with most of your comments, but still feel that 1D are very plausible winners. If you trawl this forum you would be hard pressed to find 1 positive comment about them, but their price has remained extemely short compared to the chance everyone on here gives them of winning.
My opinion has not changed since Day 1 ie that they have the greatest potential of making Cowell money of all the acts(irrespective of the fact that they are cra p)
