It's almost a Cher v Mary market this one. Current prices:

Cher 2.78
Mary 1.91

Mary will have a bounce assistence this week, plus the Irish ramps from Louis will help ensure that bloc vote.
Mary has already proven she can beat cher's vote (week cher was B2).

Prices wrong IMO - but don't complain, back Cher!

I agree that Mary is way too short - but does no-one see value in Rebecca and One Direction?

None of the Cher stuff is "new". That seems to be who she is, but she also seems to have been the one that Cowell has been riding the most in the competition.

Rebecca has received a lot of pointed criticism recently and she's always received #2 treatment behind Cher. Is that likely to change from now?

One Direction supposedly have the teeny vote. However, the past two weeks have seen them rumoured to be struggling with the vote and public votes have them way behind - although Cowell will do all he can to get them home and they almost certainly will close the show.

Personally, I think Mary is way underpriced - and whilst Cher is a decent cover bet, the real value lies with Rebecca and One Direction.
Report squares December 4, 2010 2:14 PM GMT
It could TRM.  A variety of factors could come into play tonight and it's important not to be "forgettable".

Mary was in the sing off last weekend, has been ill during the week and she has said The Way We Were is her Mother's song which she has been wanting to sing all series.  If that is her second song it could be very emotional for her, so with all these factors it doesn't look like she will be "forgettable".

Matt has really been struggling with illness so assume that is going to be apparent tonight, so drama surrounding him.

Likewise for OD.  Harry has been ill, and Zain has had to return home because of family illness/problems so they will be a 4 piece tonight.

Less going on with Rebecca and Cher (apart from all the stuff in the press about Cher's strops) so they could conceivably fall into the "forgettable" category if there is no drama around them and/or if they don't excel big time with their song selections.

Cheers shrewd - nothin like puttin a man under a bit of pressure.Have self inflicted financial pressure well and truly exerted already, mate [;)]

I was immediately interested at the start of the week once prices went up. When Fig confirmed through Louis' radio interview that it was a straight PV (on Weds iirc) this became potentially one of the bets (if not THE bet) of the series for me. Realistic B2 Cher/Mary. With the prices simply being wrong. Hope I'm right. If not, blame Shrewd + Squares for their ridiculous rants  Silly + Silly

Also one other thing I haven't seen mentioned is that it's pretty awful weather over here in Ireland, and tonight will be easily the biggest viewing figures of the series over here which should help Mary, as her strong bloc will be out in force.

Irish X Factor hopeful Mary Byrne has helped us through the doom and gloom of the last few weeks.
The Dublin Tesco worker is a truly down-to-earth woman who has lifted our spirits with her heart-warming story and amazing voice.
Let's return the favour of making her dreams come true by picking up the phones tonight and getting our favourite till lady to the final.

Irish Mirror front page:

Irish Star Sunday front page:
MARY: MY FLING WITH A WOMAN
Inside a story how in desperation she turned to the affection of a woman for support when her partner walked out on her, leaving her a single mother in hard times. She goes on to stress it was a mistake and that she's not a lesbian.
+ Numbers to vote for Mary inside

While on my Mission Impossible task set by Topper I also caught a snippet of the main 2fm Sunday morning breakfast show with Baz/Lucy. They urged the country to get behind Mary and vote for her and gave the number 1513 711 302!

Went in to Tesco to get a couple of bits and the check out lady (40 something) said it seemed like a foregone conclusion that Mary would go from the judges last night.

Flicking through the Independent (which I bought) there's a story on page 23 by a journalist Andrea Byrne (snooty middle class @r$ehole, I think is the phrase my father would use to describe her).

Thought it was mildly amusing...

Headline: One Direction for Mary may just be the boot.
Story then of how she has been a good distraction, is really not that good, she's definitely not a star. 1/4 page pic of Mary on XF with underneath: MABY, IT's CURTAINS: Dubliner Mary Byrne could be knocked out of tonight's X Factor semi-final but it remains to be seen whether judge Simon Cowell signs her to his record label.

Her story states that unless one of the other four contestants is ousted for having close relations with a) Sep Blatter or b) Vladimir Putin, that Mary's journey will come to an end tonight.

She says the final will be Matt, Rebecca, 1D. Matt's bookies' favourite, but she thinks 1D will shade it. He was much more appealing in the audition stages. He wasn't made to wear wife beater vests and sing along to dodgy backing tracks by a clueless Danni Minogue.

She goes on to say:
"If there's one act I hope doesn't remain in the public consciousness post X-Factor, it's Cher Lloyd. Other than her permanent scowl. Vicky Pollard-esque chic and over-zealous use of her tweezers, what's most grating is her bloated ego. She's already a diva, God only knows what she will be like when she actually achieves something in life. Yes she can hold a tune, bust a few moves and rap a couple of 'ring-a-ding-dingas' but that doesn't necessarily make her a star. It was heart-warming to hear her booed last Sunday."

She then predicts Mary Cher B2 with judges saving Cher as the tantrum would be too much.

iNX: I hope to **** there aint a sing off. That would be the last koont of an act that Cowell could pull. Cert Mary outpolled the scroat if so!

Nada in the Times gents....

Lot less confident now, but still hopeful over this one. Will be close I reckon, but I've left my bet with Cher to go as a lot of Mary's vote is a core vote that won't be put off by anything that happened on the show, and I don't think Cher will have appealed widely with her two slots yesterday - here's hoping.

Report hooleyhooley December 5, 2010 4:04 PM GMT
Lets get this right....

Getting through is nothing to do with singing ability or last performance.

This is a guessing game of Cowells twist and turns and media hype.

As a show its got worse as seasons have gone ny and is now utter dire. But as a betting medium it is a right little cracker.

View it this way....They all have on left bar Cole...take one out and they all have one each, all bleating on abd barking uo their act..

Cole wont go into final with two and as many judges as poss to have a live prospect to hype.

Rebecca or Cher...thats your choice this week...and chav biitch is history.

On another point..Personally cant believe the so called public voting.....But if the Irish gets behind the battle axe...Oh and they will.....and if some of her phones cant accept calls ..like they did when leon got into and won the final...
Then that country will put her in the final.

The REAL debate should have been whether or not there would be a sing off...  I think people missed a trick by getting sucked into backing Cher.

I totally agree with the basic premise of NXRBL's analysis - namely that there was not much between Mary and Cher, and certainly enough to suggest that Mary might not finish bottom of the public vote.

But this was discounting the level of manipulation that goes on in the show to ensure they get the final line-up they want.

Mary was the sacrificial lamb, her face didn't fit in the final - and hey bingo wings, the sing off miraculously reappeared to get her out.

Report Dizzy42 December 5, 2010 9:43 PM GMT
By the way, was anyone REALLY surprised to see a sing off - after last week's double elimination made a return to get rid of Wagner?

This year the rule book has gone out of the window - wild cards, random double eliminations, erratic running order, outrageous ramping, repeated pimp slots, and now the sing off in the semi.

But before we get too wound up about it, surely these are all the same reasons why there's money to be made in second guessing all of the above?!  I know that's why I love it...

This is the first time that we've had five acts in a semi final, first time that four will be in a final - so there was always going to be a good chance they would move the goalposts.

fact 2,Simon made Danny vote for Cher, because she has the most promise, and wants to give her every chance to shine, after last nights retalliation, would you have voted for Cher?think about it.
Fact 3,Simons not lying when he says its a tough call,it could swing a few ways, not one of the acts stands out, rebecca probably the one on vocals, although not my cup of tea, like taking a trip in the tardis back to the 60's,sorry,been there done that and seen better.
fact 4,rebecca is miles ahead on the voting now, think about it,clean living softly spoken shy mum, beer swilling, smoking, self confessed bum, mmmm, didnt take long did it?.
fact 5,Rebecca is the only act not to receive any real harsh criticism, apart from it being mentioned she looked nervous on one occasion.

Glad I missed this tonight, as Castle iNX would be minus one TV.

Is this Cowell's lowest stunt yet? Especially when you consider the stage at which the competition is?

Absolutely no point whatsoever in a single person voting in this charade in future. Just let the judges decide each week. Cowell making it up as he goes along. Thought with his ridic ramping that he'd bury Mary, Ooops.... Plan B: He does what the **** he wants!

Gonna be a lot of irate Irish people when they discover after next weekend that Mary shudda been in the final by a straight forward PV.

Just to be clear, my info was correct and not some ridiculous ramp. It's very easy to corroborate it. I lost. No shame in that. I'm a big boy and can take my losses. My backs were a Cher elim at 15/8 Laddies. Not on betfair.

Good Luck to Cowell trying to ship this to the Yanks. Even they're not daft enough to swallow all this load o b@ll@cks!

Louis is gonna look like one spare Pr1ck for all his PV nonsense on radio and in the Sunday papers. He could get a serious backlash here for that. Mary Byrne was of the same opinion that it was a straight PV. Papers had it billed as that here. Mary V Cher. To axe Cher => Vote Mary.

To be honest 1 D could win this by a landslide (with Niall) and they won't get a fraction of the coverage that Mary has. I imagine the papers feel cheated in the sense that they too were misled by the Show and Louis and in turn were made to look as though they misled their readership.

confirmation of what Mary has been saying:

Mary Byrne has revealed that she was only told the night before that there would be a semi-final sing-off.

The former Tesco checkout worker, who was eliminated by the judges last night, admitted that it came as a surprise to the contestants when they found out their fate wouldn't solely be down to the public vote.

Speaking on This Morning, Byrne said: "I'm not sure if I found out Saturday morning or yesterday morning, I can't remember. It's because there was five... normally it would go to the public, but because there was five they had to do it that way apparently.

"I didn't know... although I think it was Saturday actually. Well we were given 'save me songs' on Saturday but I only practised it yesterday."

However, Byrne was not critical of the changes to the format, arguing that it was a waste of time worrying about it.

"I don't know about being penalised - I think they had to change it because of the way there was four in the finals. Do you know what I mean?" she said. "So I mean, they made a decision and it was done and there's not a lot more you can do. I was just so happy to be there."

Meanwhile, the Irish singer also hinted that Louis Walsh and Simon Cowell had begun planning a debut album for her. "I have the tour coming up and apparently I'm going to be making an album - please God I hope!" she said. "The album has been mentioned twice by Simon and Louis, so I don't know... it's just exciting."

For the benefit of those of us who are newer to the forum, please continue to 'out' the genuine rampers in the final week.

I think we have a pretty good handle on most of the culprits, but where multiple accounts are used sometimes it can still be a bit misleading.

Cheers...

Oh and Nick - believe me, I've had THAT look on more than one occasion!

My other half just about tolerates all of the betting that goes on, but it starts to wear thin come Sunday night in-running sing-off trading...

Even though punting on this has virtually paid for Christmas the last three years running she still thinks I take it all WAY too seriously and need to get a life!

i didnt mention the 700 quid i had had stolen off me, but she made me realise that i am taking this pantomime very very seriously. over seriously in fact.

from now on, we know to factor in these possibilities into our betting, but if we really think our outrage will cause cowell a shred of concern then we've got another thing coming...

Red Tops still all at it here. zzzzz
Star front page: Gag on Mary
Story: X Factor Star Mary Byrne has admitted that she has been gagged about allegations that the results on Sunday were fixed.....

In a related Star story "MaBy is a ratings champion"
Dubliner Mary Byrne's dramatic exit from X Factor smashed all ratings figures for TV3 - as over 911k viewers tuned in. Bosses celebrated as ratings hit the highest in the channels 12 year history.....

I can't wait to see the actual results post XF. My guess is that Mary may have won the PV by quite a margin. I'm thinking by a couple of points, rather than the ludicrous Cher landslide win some fools predicted.

No such gag here...

The Mirror front page: They Fixed It For Me To Lose
Dumped mary lifts lid on new X Factor scandal
Mary Byrne last night accused X Factor bosses of rigging the show to get rid of her.
She claims show chiefs knew before the sing-off the public had voted for her but wanted "more marketable" Cher Lloyd to stay in. Mary said: "It's a fix. The public voted for me to stay but it was obvious Simon Cowell didn't want me." Big development of the story.....

Then there's a separate related piece "Was the Sing-Off a sham: The evidence"
The Mirror can reveal a growing catalogue of evidence that points to the sing-off being a last minute introduction brought in to save Cher Lloyd from being kicked off the X-Factor.
What Mary says:
Speaking about the decision to get the bottom two acts to perform, Mary Byrne told the Mirror she found out at the 11th hour about the move. She said she found out on Saturday about the sing off, and later told TM the contestants did not practise their songs until Sunday, such was the lateness of the arrangements.
What Dermot said:
Angry fans pointed out that DOL had told them on the show "it's you alone" who decided who went through to the final, suggesting there would be no sing-off. Halfway into the show just after all the acts performed their first songs of the night, Dermot said: "The vote is now open, and will close in tomorrow night's result show. It's now all in your hands."
What Simon said:
In an interview a week ago after Wagner Carrilho was given the boot, Cowell appeared to suggest all deciosions were down to the public, he said: "There were people trying to derail the show. What has happened tonight is we've put the show back in the hands of the public."
What Louis said:
Irish fans of the show also claim that Louis Walsh said on RTE Radio One last weel that the act with the lowest vote would leave and urged people to vote for Mary.
What XF website said:
The XF's official website stated that the act with the lowest vote would leave. The Mirror was contacted by dozens of Mary fans yesterday asking for their money back.
ITV and the X Factor were last night still insisting that the sing-off was planned well in advance but did not give a specific date.

My regular Newsagents didn't have the Sun this AM. Simon Cowell robbed them. Just like Mary.

I won't bore the forum with any more of this, gents.... My last update on the matter.

Not boring NXRBL - fascinating.

Keep it coming.  Wish the British press were pushing this with the same passion and determination!

SCowell can't lie straight in bed.

But speaking exclusively to The Sun, show boss Simon said: "We haven't done anything wrong."

He added: "All the artists knew there was going to be a sing-off.

"Mary and Cher were told last Monday to prepare a song for a sing-off if necessary."

And the producer said the format could not have been changed due to Cher coming bottom of the public vote - because he has no idea of the rankings.

He explained: "I genuinely do not know the exact placings of the artists - who is top and who is bottom. I never know those details until the series is finished."

And he said the confusion is due to next week's final having four acts instead of the three always featured in previous series.

He said: "There has always been a sing-off when there are five people left in the competition. This is a lot of nonsense about nothing."

Re: last paragraph.  There has been a sing off where there are five people left in the competition twice in the past 6 series, once was the first year which only had 9 contestants and then again in series 3 when Eton Road got the boot over Ben Mills Cry

Meanwhile, ITV says ONLY the public vote will decide the final results of the series this weekend.

As an aside here and maybe noteworthy is that any possible transfer of Mary regional support to 1D is now foooked! This may not have been huge, but 400-500k votes can't be sniffed at.

No way the Niall kid will get any support other than from his hardcore locality, which is an inconsequential little town called Mullingar, circa 10k population.

NXRBL, surely Ireland is too aggrieved to bother voting much this weekend?
Report Johnny`Honk`Fartpants December 7, 2010 3:55 PM GMT
That's what he's saying bunny.

Regards that last paragraph squares, I'd love one of us on here to get through to the Xtra Factor phone in and ask Cowell about the 4 times it has been straight public vote with only 5 contestants left because the dopey British public will believe him when he says that.
Report NXRBL December 7, 2010 4:02 PM GMT
Bunny, ^^ what Johnny says above mate. No Irish vote after this.

I defo propose Sq for the phone-in to give Cowell the Gestapo treatment!!
