Matt

The default winner, as he has been from his bootcamp performance.

A good looking guy who has a pretty decent if uninspiring (for me) voice, who on the whole comes over well on the show if you buy into his mock sincerity. Which most appear to do so.
His so called 'outburst' at Wagner last night was a fuss about nothing and will have done him no harm whatsoever.
He'd need to reproduce one of his foul mouthed newspaper rants on one of the live shows to do himself any real damage and I suspect he's way too cute to do that.

A worthy favoruite but beatable.

1D

Another OK performance this week to add to their previous OK performances.
Will OK before enough to win with the help of Cowell?  Maybe, as we saw last year with Joe ;), but I still believe they'll come up well short and could find themselves in a 'shock' B2  in the next couple of weeks.

When I look on twitter every week I struggle to find any support beyond text speaking teenage girls.
They're just not broadening their support and I believe they'll come up well short  against an on form Rebecca and Matt.
I can see why the market fears them given they have Cowell in their corner, but I'm far from certain that he actually wants them to win above others
Way too short for me.

Rebecca

The best voice in one of these shows ever (for melv ;) )

Not this week though. She  started badly and it went downhill from there. I thought she was going to stop at one point, so fairplay to her for getting to the end and despite Cowell's praise,  for realising and admitting that she was rubbish.
Just a one off? As a backer and a fan I hope so, but the worry has to be that she won't regain her confidence that she'd been gaining over the previous weeks.

The odds are she'll nail at least one of her songs this week and Cowell will heap praise on her and congratulate her on an excellent comeback.

He clearly still wants her to win, as we saw with him picking her out again last night, despite her below par performance  and he'll favour her in the final over 1D imo. Assuming she regains her form of course.

I can see why the market has lost a little confidence in her, but for me it's been overdone and one week  I reckon one of these flip flops will stick.

Cher

Where was her massive fanbase this week? Out tarmacing pensioners drives no doubt. (one for the daily mail readers)
More seriously though, she doesn't have a massive fanbase. Just a small and very vocal one, who as the numbers dwindled, was always going to be swamped by the mainstream viewers and voters. Just as Aidens fanbase was and I suspect 1D's will be too.

Rapping just isn't voter friendly on a show like this and her sneering, rather cocky looking face means she was always going to struggle to endear herself to the audience.

My niece described her as looking like one of the girls at school who would bully you and reading general internet opinion she's not alone in that thought.
As I've said before, she's not just marmite, she's that swedish rotting herring.

Virtually no hope and should probably be the outsider of the field.

Wagner

Very little chance. Little is better than none though.
The little hope is  a RATM type mass campaign which could give Cowell the ultimate poke in the eye by having someone who can't sing or dance winning his flagship show.

What a glorious dream that is.  You may say I'm a dreamer but I'm not the only one, etc....

I know others disagree but for me the maths are possible. 500,000 people multi voting for him in the final would see him winning easily. iirc there were nearly 1M who signed up for the RATM campaign and in terms of motivation a Christmas no.1 was nothing compared with this massively greater prize.

Mary

Not a huge amount to say.  A very decent singer who I'm sure appeals more to this audience than some of those shorter in the market.
Cowell obviously knows that as since week 1 he's been loath to give her too much praise.
I'm sure her song and performance was right up his alley this week, but his comments were very muted.
It suggests to me that she's still polling well and he's afraid she'll take the 3rd spot in the final above his peado project.

No real chance of winning but could be a surpise (to some) finalist.

Katie

If Vickers was marmite and Cher is swedish rotting fish, then Katie is horse meat.
The French may well like their horse meat and having watched a few overly dramatic French films they clearly like their drama queens, but neither are  very British.

Corned beef and Stoicism is much more our thing.

On a personal note, along with Rebecca, she's the one who I look forward to most each week.
She's always very watchable, but rarely very likeable.

Surely only a loon or a Frenchman could believe she has a cat in hells chance of winning.

A toss up between her and Cher who should be the bigger price. Given she's been bottom only the 4 times, I'd probably favour her.

So it's still a 2 horse race for me. Matt and Rebecca, with Rebecca storming to victory and replacing Cheryl as our new national sweetheart.

All honest and dishonest views welcomed.

I'm late catching up with this thread - but I agree with FLL and most of the initial posts.  It's been looking like a two horse race for some time now, although I do think Cowell will at least ensure that his 1D makes it a three.  I'm with Jack in that the teenie vote IS still very important, but you need to appeal to a broad church to win the X Factor.

Rhydian didn't win because he didn't appeal to the young audience - whereas Leon had the support of young girls, mums and grans alike.  Likewise Leona, Alexandra, Joe - they appealed to both demographics.  Cher will fall foul because she only appeals to one audience too - and us oldies just don't get it!

That's why it could be Matt OR Rebecca at this stage - they are bland enough to generate support across the generation gap.  It might be questionable whether 1D will appeal beyond the 8-13 age group, although like JLS they'll probably attract enough of the mum support to get close to the final.
Report Journeyman November 24, 2010 5:29 PM GMT
Agree with your thoughts on, fll.

Mary and Rebecca are surely the two that Cowell doesn't want to see win as they both reinforce the 'cliched reality show winner' assumptions whilst not having the actual star quality to be particularly useful to him.

i.e Mary as a fairly poor SuBo/McManus style underdog and Rebecca as a very poor Lewis/Burke 'doesn't matter that she's boring she's a real singer' equivalent.

Katie also has a nice 'real' voice but is at least interesting (albeit in a relentless carcrash kind of way) and Cher is a work in progress but clearly special... so it's not surprising that they've been afforded rings of protection for now at least.

Think you've naile it on One Direction.

Glee cast for XF semis?  Good for tween/teen vote?

The cast of Glee will reportedly perform on next week's X Factor semi-final.

It was previously reported that Simon Cowell was organising the appearance, which will apparently see them perform a medley of tracks from the hit show.

A post on the official Twitter page for Alex and Lucy's In:Demand radio show read: "OMGlee!! The Glee cast are set to perform on X Factor. "

It then added a link to Examiner, which appears to be the original source.

It was announced last week that the show's cast will embark on a European tour next year, which includes five confirmed dates in the UK and Ireland.

The X Factor semi-final will take place over the weekend of December 4 and 5.

Does sound like SC's secret recipe to get 1D there at all costs, yep

Whether it works, gawd knows. The voting audience will have a massive demographic spread by then, and that surely increases Mary's chances of making up the numbers in the final
Report Dizzy42 November 24, 2010 6:03 PM GMT

Report GeorgeBrush November 24, 2010 6:55 PM GMT

Report Journeyman November 24, 2010 7:00 PM GMT
Even if 'they' were wanting to handicap her by nailing her to the spot until the end of the series it's hard to imagine she'd go along with it if she was actually a real all round performer?

She's just a voice, which in turn puts pressure on the voice, hence inconsistent results.
Report Ashley_Young November 24, 2010 7:01 PM GMT
No last week was poor. hindsight says that song requires a flat voice not a wobbly one like Rebecca's, Cowell was visually disappointed....he'll be taking care of things from now on.

I think it was telling that they didn't pan her, because they could have if they had wanted to.  Reminded me a little of when Jordin Sparks had a real nightmare with the Bon Jovi theme and they just brushed it off as being not her thing, ignore it, etc.
Report Dizzy42 November 24, 2010 7:04 PM GMT
Last week was definitely NOT the plan.  In Beatles week the Liverpudlian Lass was supposed to shine.  Oops!

The fact that they've never commented on Rebecca being a one trick pony, not doing up-tempo numbers, or even attempting to move at all, proves to me that they are giving her as easy a passage to the final as possible.

Unfortunately for them, last week it didn't pay off!

Good on Rebecca for admitting it though - that in itself will win her support.

Fig my views on Cher and Rebecca are pretty much the reverse of yours so we're not going to agree there at all.

I thought your comment on One Direction was on the money. i.e. Being rightly feared as Cowell was behind them but your not being at all sure he actually wanted them to win.
When I hear him voicing his enthusiasm for them breaking the mould of the expected winners of the comp, that enthusiasm seems real but is it actually directed at them or are they just the 'backup mouldbreakers'?
You rightly point out their appeal beyond the teen market is limited, but also their potential appeal beyond the country is also open to question. Sure he can squeeze some 1D hits out of the fickle teen audience for a while but their main use to him might be to safely guide home a potentially far bigger international fish before (unwittingly!) falling on their swords at a late hurdle. Maybe a rotting fish Silly

The journey theory is way overdone on these things, some front runners win and some come from behind.

I agree that to say Rebecca is holding something back is just clutching at straws.  Every week she surely goes out there and try's her best with the songs she's given/chose as anyone would in her shoes.  She's had 7 attempts now and that is her best!  She was awful last week we all know that and it is strange how the judges didn't tell her so woth Cowell even praising her .... that's ridiculous. they don't mention she's doing the same thing every week either wheras Mary got picked up on her third attempt!  Bar the first week she's sang 6 ballads and not moved an inch barely.  Exclaiming last week "I was out of my comfort zone having to walk to the front of the stage"!!

I'm sure she'll do better this week but she's drifted from about 2-1 last week to 4-1 now which obviously isn't a good sign.  I'm really not convinced she'll make the final 3 even.  She's due to sing first which she hasn't yet and had the pimp slot two weeks ago delivering another 'quite good' performance.  Surely quite good isn't the winner of the X Factor.

Matt Cardle backtracks on Wagner: "I said things that I shouldn't have"

The X Factor
2010 war between contestants Matt Cardle and Wagner seems to have called down this week, with Matt yesterday backtracking on his previous comments about the Brazilian. TellyMix has reported numerous times over the past few weeks on the war of word between the rowing contestants.

Last night however it seems that Matt wanted to call a truce with Karate champion. Matt confessed: “I’ve been a little bit outspoken about certain issues and certain people in the competition and I think that it’s time to shut the hell up about it because it’s no-ones fault and I understand that.

“I’m not being a bitch, I’m not moaning, it’s just it’s hard when my guys are going.”

Matt explained: “I lost Aiden, then I lost Paije, so I got a little bit angry and said things that I shouldn’t have said. Maybe that I didn’t necessarily mean as well.”

quite good isn't the winner of the X Factor

It was last year.  The winner doesn't have to be a top class singer/performer.  The contestants should also be looked at in the context of the opposition they face as well as how good they are.  For me, Rebecca has given some of the best performances of the series and is potentially much better than the opposition.  However, last week's performance was well below what I would have expected from her and a bit of a worry tbh.  I fear another performance like that this week will kill her chances of winning altogether.

As for the argument that Rebecca is very samey.  The same could be said for most contestants can't it?  Last week was the first time Matt has deviated from the girly songs he normally sings.  Wagner and Mary are pretty samey every week.  Admitedly, it would be good to hear Rebecca do an uptempo number which apparently she'll be doing this coming week.

Matt Cardle has criticised his own performance on last week's Beatles-themed X Factor.

Cardle's rendition of 'Come Together' won praise from Cheryl Cole, who said that she enjoyed seeing the "cheeky chappy" side of his personality.

However, the ex-painter and decorator confessed in his latest video blog that he wasn't pleased with the end result last Saturday.

"Last week was fun - really, really fun - but I overcooked the vocal in a big way," he said. "I forgot about the extra 10% you give it when you are actually doing it live with the adrenaline of being on stage.

Surely not to manufacture a little controversy and make sure they get your money, sorry, votes, eh? Unless a vast number ofnon-viewers are mobilised in an anti-realityshow protest, Matt/One Direction and Matt/Scottare still the likely XF and Strictly champs.

Cher for me.

I see no reason for any significant bounce. She's just not likeable.

Plus I think she'll get pimped a bit

Having said that an early for Wag looks inevitable to me, so maybe giving Mary a late by default..

She's certainly due one
