I'm sorry and I know it is petty, but this is bugging me more and more as the tournament progresses.

Please get the spelling of the bl00dy country correct ffs. It's primary school stuff!

You can spell it either way both are correct.
Just like you can spell Romania as Rumania.

You will also have to re educate the Germans and the Poles as they spell it as Kolumbien or in Polish Kolumbia.
It just seems that you and the Columbians are bothered by this.
The brazilians don't seem arsed that we use a Z instead of an S in their name.

I am not talking about German, Polish or any other spelling. I am only talking about the ENGLISH spelling of the word:

I am Half Polish so I will continue to spell it with the (U) Kolumbia.
Hope the (K) doesn't upset you too much.

both ways are not correct
it is colombia only
Report Mikael D'Haguenet July 4, 2014 10:31 AM BST
I'm going to spell it Kolumbia from now on, in solidarity with Slaski.

Many countries are not spelled the same in English as in their native language so why make Columbia a special case?
Report Slaski July 4, 2014 11:08 AM BST
Considering the English language is very much based on Latin.
The Latin word for Colombia is Columbia.
I would imagine if you had an Oxford English dictionary from the past 30 years and farther back it would be Columbia.
Colombia seems to be the proper form in Spanish.
The word is derived from Columbus not Colombus.

Exactly Slaski. A similar case with Romania, as you already stated.

Sir Francis Drake would be spinning in his grave if he knew that modern day Englishmen were using the Spanish spelling of Columbia.
Why did he bother thwarting the Spanish Armada if we were going to end up speaking Spanish anyway.
