Players with space, and options giving long range passes back to the keeper, who then instead of passing it to one of his defenders, and thereby retaining possession, punts it upfield. It then occasionaly goes into touch ,for an opposition throw,or into the heart of the opposition defense, resulting in loss of possession.Rarely does it reach an attacking player.
Algeria did that,FIVE to TEN YARDS inside their own half, back to the keeper, and yes,the keeper drove it straight into the opposition defense.
In their prime,it was a rarity to see Barca follow that line of play,as they wanted to retain possession,at all costs.
Yes,there is a time when a back-pass is necessary, but most are just stupidity, and the coaches should instil that in their players.
I wish I could bet on back passes resulting in a loss of possession.
These are supposedly the best players in the World, with the best coaches.I wonder!!

the fact is that in most cases the first goal is decisive so it pays teams to play safe and hope they can get the first goal

I have thought the same thing.  The thinking seems to have gone away from possession being crucial to it being OK to give the ball away if in a defensive formation.  Maybe they are just scared of getting hit on the counter.

What has the pass-back got to do with playing safe,if it generally results in losing possession.I have watched nearly all World Cup games and can say for certain that it meant loss of possession with the majority of back -passes.Of course there are the odd occasions when the defender has no choice, but 30 yards,or more, back passes, leave it out!!

Keeping possession is key at the highest level.
With the ball you can score, without it you cant.
Possession football served Spain Barca and more recently Bayern well.
The reason England sides struggle is that they CANT keep possession for any length of time due to poor technical ability.

And that has been a problem for many years, that is way so many foreign players are now playing in the Prem.Their close control,in then main,is more skillful, and don't try to play faster than their brains can think.Unfortunately many fans get excited by pacey football, fair enough, but when it means continual loss of possession, then it becomes frustrating.
