So after another pitiful performance at the World Cup the bosses of the premier league should hang their heads in shame.
The English! premier league should be called the multi national league, there are only 28% of ENGLISH players playing in it.
Until this is addressed NOTHING will change .We have not got any world class players and more worryingly the required technical abilty to compete.
Yes ,the manager has failings ,but whoever is the manager is fighting a lost cause.

How are failures 20 years ago and more relevant to today? The guy has a point. Also the premier league is over rated and the established players like Rooney and Gerrard think they're better than they are. They're exposed at every World Cup. As long as people keep paying Sky stupid money to watch the premier league England will continue to fail.

if young english players are not given the chance at home, why don't they move abroad? The EPL pillages the Dutch league for their young players before sending 3 out of 4 home a few years later worse players than they were when they left Holland. Why don't some of these fantastic young English players move to Holland?

the TV money means that even ordinary players in this country are being paid silly money so why would anybody ever consider leaving to play somewhere else for lower wages.

besides if you move abroad you might have less chance of getting a game as you are competing with more skillful players.

Report SHAPESHIFTER June 25, 2014 11:22 AM BST
Ted Brogan is right.

The Premier League is a corporation owned by owners who don't reap any benefits from the bi-yearly competitions that England participate in.

I've lived in the UK now since 2001 and have watched how the Premier League feel less and less 'English'.

Any English player that does well in the PL usually has someone with English as a second or third language beside him.

That said, English football players in general lack the passion and pride when you watch other countries get together on the pitch and come across as 'business as usual' and it might as well be a pre-season exhibition game in Tokyo.

Will Team England bring home trophies from either competition in our lifetime?  I doubt it.

Will the PL make more and more money as a 'brand'.  Yes.

Does the FA stand a chance versus the PL?  Not an ounce.

Failures of 20 years plus show that England fans expect too much, it is part of the English psyche in that this once great country can go out of the competition at the first stage.

So it's SKY'S fault that England have not qualified, get real England have won 1 World Cup, when played at home. I loved the 1990 squad but they were very lucky, we then had 98 and 02 when we had a good squad but came up short against very good teams. At the moment we just don't have the players and the manager has made some errors.

In 98 and 02, we only had about 30% foreigners in the EPL, now it is 72% and watching the game between Switzerland and Honduras, one of the commentators, stated that some of these Honduras players look good, I bet there's a few managers hoping to sign these players for Premier League clubs. The fact is, there wasn't 1 Honduras player, that looked any better than Division 1 quality. Home grown talent, has little chance, I suggest they take up another sport, like Golf, Cricket, Tennis or Rugby U/League.
Report zilzal1 June 26, 2014 11:31 AM BST
Comparisons with the past dont really cut it. for a start in the Qualifiers you didnt have a play off game and only the winners went through

For 74 we lost out to Poland(who went on to be the 3rd place team in the WC) and probably had more shots on target in that Fateful game at Wembley than our last two whole tournaments with the keeper having one of those nights

In 78 we were unlucky to be in a group with Italy and lost out on goal difference finishing second

Different format for the Euro's and we lost out to the eventual winners, West Germany, in a two legged semi final in 72, whilst only finishing runners up to the eventual 76 winners Czechoslavakia in the qualifying group having giving them a right going over at Wembley them ruining it by drawing at home with portugal

And we were Pipped by the Dutch for the world cup 1994... i hazard a guess that our recent qualying record wouldnt be that great if we faced the same kind of opponents these days

Backfill the other 72% or even 50% from the reserves or championship who lets face it, wont be lighting up a world cup if they cant get in a club side. Forwards get even more overconfident playing Birmingham City defenders. Defenders get overconfident dealing with  late thirties journeyman forwards. Absolutely clueless by the time we get to a major tournament. Dont see how any of this is helping.

look how many people believed the media spin about how well england played against italy.

players like sterling, rooney and sturridge were hopeless and did nothing apart from sticking their head down and running until they lost the ball.
there was no teamwork. only a collection of glory hunters all desperate to be the one to score.

everybody wanted barkley to come on and when he did arrive he did the same as the rest.
head down and run until he lost the ball.

yet he was hailed as a success just like the others.

I think if barkley listens to martinez he can be a major player for his club and his country in the future, but unfortunately he is nowhere near world class at the moment.
If he keeps progressing he could well be a top class player one day although looking at that england team he is the only one who looks to have any possibilities.

the rest look decidedly ordinary.

I agree with the OP

If this world cup has shown anything it is that you can train and coach footballers to be international standard
Into a competitive team too
World class standard is different but that can be short lived (ie spain)

There are a lot of overseas players in the EPL being payed world class wages and are not producing
I think Man City understand this
THey have indeed inflated the transfer market to get to where they are. In the long term they will look to young talent to make up the majority of their squad, while still being in the market for the likes of Aguero, Silva, Yaya to put the icing on the cake so to speak

It must be the way to go
Young British talent need a rounded education as well as coaching to be top players
So they understand that its not all about the bling

EPL clubs need a far sighted strategy for the good of  the game, the youngsters and the national team
Report Pleasegivemeanailedontip June 27, 2014 10:52 PM BST
I agree with yourself and the OP that we obviously havent got the quality of players to challenge for the world cup. Even with a top manager who could have got us the 5 points we needed (not inconceivable considering the goals we conceded in the first 2 and the understrength team we played in the 3rd game), we still didnt have the quality to go any further than quarter finals at best. There is undoubtedly work to do in coaching, grass roots, team management etc.

I dont agree the reason has anything to do with foreigners in the epl though. Imagine rolling back twenty years and continuing with our old first division instead. Then imagine uefa sets up a european superleague to attract the cream of europe/the world. Would we honestly be begging our best players not to play in it because we thought we would have a better national team with them staying in our first division? The situation we have in the epl is the same as that except its on our doorstep.

I dont even think the epl is the defining league in this world cup but surely challenging english players to compete at as high a standard as possible, just to get a game every week, is an advantage for us.

arguing that too many foreigners is a bad thing makes no sense to me. if removing them would mean championship standard football in the premier league then how would it help? our english players in the championship are already playing at that standard and are not considered good enough by the english management.

presumably removing the foreign players would be more likely to drag our best players down into a more english style of football rather than improving the standard of those who currently can't break in to premier league sides. far from improving matters, it would exacerbate the issues of english players being relatively uncomfortable on the ball, unintelligent and disorganised.

having a higher proportion of scottish players in the top league in scotland hasn't done the scots any favours internationally. this too many foreigners in the premier league issue is a misguided excuse.

charlaton,  Young English players with huge potential largely are unable to play in the Premiership as it is full of foreigner purchases by premier managers.
Ask yourself this if you were a premier boss would you play a young player before your multi million pound purchases?
The reality is the young English lads are farmed out on loan playing in an inferior league as they cant get a game!
Why do premier bosses buy foreigners? The answer is simple English players are more expensive in the market, take Luke Shaw as an example, over £30 million for a full back.
In a nutshell there should be a cap on foriegn players for all teams in the Premiership to allow young English players a chance to fulfill their potential.
IF/when the cap is implemented the English manager will have a chance for the national team to achieve the results the nation deserves.

I'm 41yo. 30 years ago when I was in my last year at primary school, I used to get there 45 minutes before the doors opened for a game of 23-a-side with a tennis ball. If you got the ball, you held onto it, as you might not see it again.
Same thing after school, then in for your tea and out again until your Mam came and dragged you off to bed.
Everybody knew who was the best player in your area and, trust me, technically he was mustard. But there would be another one two streets away, it's all anyone did, there was nothing else.
Kids these days simply don't do that, there are too many other distractions. Everybody has a games console and a smart phone and sports in schools is a shadow of it's former self. It's highly likely that the next Gazza is out there somewhere and has never even kicked a football.
It's no coincidence that countries with less developed economies and little in the way of a welfare state are producing better quality players, they're picking from a vastly bigger pool, as these kids having no other distractions and there is the added motivation that success will change the lives of your entire family. That's not going to change any time soon.

I don't know enough about the actual details of that. What I can say is when I was at primary school, yes we had our own football pitch but we didn't have a qualified sports teacher of any description. Football matches were often reffed by the 60 year old headmistress. On the other hand, my son's school doesn't have its own pitch, but they use the local park, or the local sports grounds and they have 3 specialist sports teachers with degrees in the subject. So the tuition is clearly of a different world in his case, and the facilities are better as well, albeit off site.

loser, of the teams you mention, Germany have an academy system that is the envy of the world and take their extra-curricular sports very seriously, nor do they mind picking players who spent their formative years in less developed economies and so have benefited from a lack of other distractions - despite this, what have they won recently? France and Holland have been packing their teams with young players from their former colonies for years and it may have passed you by, but the Italians and Swiss are hardly world beaters themselves. Spain is barely a first world economy, outside of the big cities and holiday resorts, it's pretty much third world.
And yes, football is a passing game, but the basics of ball control are required first. How are you going to pass it if you don't have it.
I would've thought it painfully obvious that a country that has more children kicking any type ball around for more of the time would produce better players, Brazil don't seem to have done too badly over the years and this world cup is showing that the gap is narrowing. You seem to disagree? In which case what do you think is the problem?
