i think this is one game england win....under Dogs costa rica dont care about this game...they're looking forward to next round....none of their players will wAnt to miss out on that ,just to beat ENGLAND...england of course are trying to save face and the white wash...just my thoughts
Report Platini June 22, 2014 1:25 PM BST
England should win this. Always win meaningless games, and Costs Rica will be resting their players.

Saying all that, I still won't be backing them with any cash Laugh
Report mrfishfingers June 22, 2014 1:43 PM BST
Costa Rica won't be resting sh#t, they will know that topping the group (draw will do) will give them an advantage; IC are merely a "good side" whereas Colombia are potential winners.

Price will drift strongly pregame when Roy announces young/ euro 2016 team and then like crazy during the game itself when they underperform as per.

Lay Engerland and overs
Report Mikael D'Haguenet June 22, 2014 3:13 PM BST
I've had the tiniest of tickles on Costa Rica so have been taking more notice of what happens after the group stage now that they've qualified. Not only would we almost all agree that playing Ivory Coast or Japan would be much better than facing the dangerous looking Colombians, if they were to make it to the quarters they'd be scheduled to meet the winner of the GrpB winners/GrpA 2nd. If things stay as they are that would be Holland or Croatia/Mexico, in sultry Salvador. Alternatively they'd be faced with Brazil/Chile in the quarters, should they make it past Colombia. I'm sure they're not getting too far ahead of themselves, but it seems to me that topping the group leads to a much more favourable draw for them. Win the group = semis are not out of reach; finish 2nd and they go out in the 'round of 16.'

A lot of assumptions on group finishes here. Obviously no guarantee that Brazil win their group, nor the Dutch theirs.
Report Ibrahima Sonko June 22, 2014 3:20 PM BST
England cant win any type of lately, they couldnt even win their friendly games.

Costa Rica easy win for me.
Report 1stpost June 22, 2014 3:48 PM BST
still think England...Columbia?..well Costa have already beaten Uruguay and Italy!...looking at the betting history they were both considered the equal of Columbia...i really cant see the problem...if they're going to win they have to face what comes...to proceed they dont have to beat England and risk "cards" and "injuries"...and!..suppose they do field their best team and LOOSE!?...how demoralizing would that BE!?...
My guess is England
Report 1stpost June 22, 2014 3:55 PM BST

england might well win the game, but that's beside the point, those odds are a ridiculous. costa rica have beaten both the teams who beat us. they should be odds on not us. crazy!
Report iprefertolay June 22, 2014 4:48 PM BST
totally agree metaphor
Report cricketnut2 June 22, 2014 4:56 PM BST
And I agree too. If You wait long enough though, England will start, even shorter than that, just because people want to back England, regardless of who they are playing or how they are playing. I am expecting about 1.8 England at the start and that means a BIG LAY of England, should that happen.
Report iprefertolay June 22, 2014 5:09 PM BST
needless to say i concur
Report 247lol June 22, 2014 6:15 PM BST
Just a question of looking at the teams prior to kick off although I cannot see any England team being good enough to compete on this stage no matter who he plays, they have looked promising against a totally naff Italian side and their defending was again exposed against a very modest Uruguay(Suarez the only exception).
To put it bluntly England have a few promising individuals led by the likes of useless Rooney, slowcoach Gerrard and a t**ser manager that cant even speak pwoperly !, So Costa Rica who have pace ideas  and have come here to play should be odds against any England eleven given the current situation.
Report cathy seldon June 22, 2014 6:24 PM BST
what do costa rica have to play for? they have qualified how hard are they going too try?
Report judorick June 22, 2014 6:31 PM BST
they will want to finish top of their group, plus winning all 3 group games beating 3 World Cup winners would be massive for them

will be trying their nuts off no danger of that
Report iprefertolay June 22, 2014 6:34 PM BST
they will be trying, its far better to win your group than being runner up(forward thinking) its a concept the english cant quite grasp!
Report stu June 22, 2014 6:40 PM BST
Not convinced by the 'Costa Rica won't care' view - can't see how England will care more for this result.
Report Ibrahima Sonko June 22, 2014 6:43 PM BST

Report stu June 22, 2014 6:43 PM BST
Could fizzle into a boring 0-0 sort of match, but that's still ok if you're laying England
Report Asparagus Man June 22, 2014 7:20 PM BST
Astonishing odds really for a match where one teams comes in P2 L2 and the other P2 W2

Draw looks big to me on the basis that it ensures Costa Rica go through as winners and a bit of face saving for England.

Not a match for big bets imo.
Report Fela Kuti June 22, 2014 8:09 PM BST

I said on another thread Costa Rica players would love to be on £300,00 a week for playing badly.
Europe will be watching them (incl managers and agents).  Costa Rica players would love to impress and play in the top European leagues.
Only 11 of the Costa Rica 23 man squad play in Europe, most of those in lesser leagues.

Costa Rica may need just a point against England on Tuesday to secure top spot in Group D but coach Jorge Luis Pinto will still ring the changes, assistant boss Paulo Wanchope said on Sunday. Costa Rica have been one of the major surprises at the FIFA World Cup™ so far, beating both Uruguay and Italy to secure their passage to the Round of 16 before facing England.

If they avoid defeat they will be assured of topping the group but Costa Rica will have one eye on the knock-out rounds and Wanchope, who scored in both the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, says they will give some fringe players a chance.

"The first thing is to manage our emotions. We've already qualified but it is important to look forward, it's important to keep growing as a team," said the 37-year-old former Derby County, West Ham United and Manchester City forward.

Wanchope said there would be changes to "give some other players some football. It's important to give some football to those who don't normally get any and also to see how they fit into the system."

While it is always considered advantageous to win your group, Costa Rica full-back Christian Gamboa said his side wouldn't see it as a disadvantage to come second as they would likely face Colombia in the Round of 16.

"If we get Colombia, the professor (Pinto) knows them really well, he knows everything about his country and so we could have something of an advantage," said Gamboa.

These youngsters may stand a chance, Wilshere could make a big difference with his pace and their defence on the halfway line. Chile beat them 4-0 not so long ago. It should be an end to end match, if only we had Crouch to latch onto the long balls.

Any unquoted or 5 goals + would be my play. Lampard or Wilshere to score at anytime 9/2 & 13/2.

Report iamajambo June 24, 2014 12:04 PM BST
At the outset I backed England at 18.5 to get exactly 1 point.Subsequent to England's defeat by Uruguay and prior to Costa Rica's victory over Italy I got 11/2 for Costa Rica to beat England.I've layed my stake for these 2 bets at 4.0 for exactly 1 point.

Still plenty of time left to do the sensible thing and lay England at odds on.1.9 or thereabouts is absolute madness.
Report Mikael D'Haguenet June 24, 2014 12:26 PM BST
Nice one jambo. Backed them at 11.5 to finish bottom so we'll both happpily take the draw!
Report iamajambo June 24, 2014 12:40 PM BST
Just layed England at 1.83,which makes an England defeat slightly more profitable(I think),but also much more fun.

it was like end of the season logic - team A has nothing to play for blah blah blah but there was really nothing in the past two matches to suggest that they should be odds on to beat team A who had already beaten the two teams who beat England previously - madness!
Report cricketnut2 June 24, 2014 7:22 PM BST
2.5 would have been a silly price, for England to win, but odds on, well anyone backing at that price need their heads tested, as we are very very poor at football. The Premier League need to take a good hard long, look at itself. The manager has very few to pick from, kick out all of the useless foreigners (many) and bring some British talent into the game, it won't help in the next couple of years, but 10 years down the line, we may be grateful, we did kick out alot of the useless foreigners.
