ok rooney may not be the player he was but if u wanna drop him to put milnerr in to wet nurse the hapless baines then fine but please don't tell me you wouldn't prefer to drop welbeck and keep rooney.its too late to do much about the left back problem as we left the best full back9cole) at home.i agree we cant let baines do his job properly somome like milner will have to do half his job for him(milners good at that up and down the line stuff) if you want to drop rooney for lallana or barkely then ok I can see some merit in that but welbeck playing and rooney not is just madness.rooneys job is to make and score goals , very tough when you spending half he time covering baines.lets go with rooney and sturrige up front with sterling on the right nd milner on the left to shore up that side as uragauy and costa rica are going to target baines.i don't think we need huge changes as overall eng did pretty well v Italy and with a little bit of luck woud have got something from that game
Its a bit harsh to criticise Rooney for not playing well, when he has been played in an unfamiliar position imo. Hodgson's job is to try and get the best out of his best players and find a system that accommodates them all. He patently isnt doing that. Its the usual England approach of just picking your best XI players on paper and then shoe-horning them into any old formation.
Brendan Rodgers showed last season, that a bit of tactical nous can get 11 players playing beyond their abilities if it works as a 'team'. I dont think Roy is capable of this tbh.
I would be tempted to try the diamond. The main reason for Liverpool trying it was to get the best out of both Suarez and Sturridge and it worked. No reason why it couldnt work for him and Rooney imo. Sturridge, Sterling, Henderson, Gerrard and Johnson are all familiar with it, and it has worked well for all of them.
I'd probably bring Milner in for Welbeck if this were the case mind you, despite the fact I thought he played very well v Italy.

Not everyone is going to be full of tricks and do the fancy stuff. He worked tirelessly closing down and helping cover for Johnson's defensive deficiencies (of which there are a few) and made runs to create space for others. I think he did well.

Everyone knows Rooney should be dropped. Everyone knows Rooney won't be dropped. We just have to live with it. Same with Gerrard. Hodgson hasnt got the bottle to drop them.
