Isn't 2 holding midfielders meant to release the front 4 so they don't have to track back as much? Expert pundits seem to think were still playing 4-4-2 yet they still think it's an attacking side with Gerard and Henderson in the middle?
I think eng have decided that their best option is to play on the break with pace and I personally didn't think theyd cut much ice before the tourney but I was pleasantly surprised how well eng passed the ball and their overall play.

Me too, didnt have a problem with the performance or the set up really, I was more confused by the punditry. Dixon and Shearer saying Rooney was leaving Baines exposed suggests they think were still playing 4-4-2. I thought the idea of playing 4-2-3-1 was that Gerrard and Henderson take more responsibility to protect the back four and Rooney and Wellbeck generally stay forward to pick up the breaks and discourage Italys fullbacks from bombing on. To me it looks like Roys made the shift from negative solid set up to a risk-taking counter attack set up but as soon as we lose to a good side the pundits are saying the left midfielder isnt tracking back and doing his defensive job?
