Because i must be a complete fool -

All i see is a player who seems to be walking a hell of alot around the pitch , somebody who passes an easy ball 90% of the time - now and again he will deliver a 70 yard ball only for the receiver to be surrounded by opponents within no time . Where are these defence splitting passes that ' world greats ' do ?

Ive watched the game twice and cannot see anything more than average from him .

thanks .

Yes I can explain for you
He is English and our media like to build up characters for the purpose of filling hours of talking time or column inches
We simply dont have a class player in England so the media creates one
I wouldnt care but he cant even talk properly
Report AFTERTHOUGHT June 15, 2014 7:01 PM BST
No explanation - media hype - a kkit kkat, a kkan of kkoke and a packet of kkrisps!
Report iprefertolay June 15, 2014 7:06 PM BST
World class wages no world class performances same can be levelled at rooney and the rest.
Report oberfuhrer9 June 15, 2014 10:53 PM BST
Premier league is one big hype con 3 decent teams rest dross a few imports are good at the top teams but no English class anywhere
Report kincsem June 16, 2014 4:15 AM BST
I think English players are rated World Class if they have been to the World Cup. Cool
Report ExtremeX June 16, 2014 6:32 AM BST
too old now to be anything
Report OliasOfSunhillow June 16, 2014 8:59 AM BST
Here is my simple definition of World Class. If you were selecting a squad of 22 players from the world a player can be considered world class by you if you would select him in that 22. So if there were to be say 8 midfield players in your 22 man squad Gerrard would have to be one of the best 8 midfield players in the world. If you think he is then your objectivity gene, if there is one, is faulty.
Report 247lol June 16, 2014 10:29 AM BST
Name one person that's ever said he's world class ! I have certainly never heard anyone say that at least not recently.
End of thread because your obviously another Jock,Paddy or Liverpool hater just wanting to sound off.
Report Mike-lfc June 16, 2014 2:41 PM BST
He's 34 ****g years old. He hasnt been world class since 08/09.
Report Mike-lfc June 16, 2014 2:41 PM BST
And if you don't think he was world class back in the day then yes your are a fool. Now though i agree he barely does anything.
Report metaphor June 16, 2014 2:43 PM BST

For all the grief that Rooney is getting from the other night, Gerrard should be getting that 10 fold.....he was pretty much ANONYMOUS from first to last....he couldn't even be bothered to make an effort to appeal for the penalty shout.
Report iprefertolay June 16, 2014 3:50 PM BST
Lets get real, how many England players would get in a world eleven?
NONE.
Years back,Charlton,Moore,Banks,Gascoigne(at his best)perhaps Lineker.
Cant think of many others.
Report OliasOfSunhillow June 16, 2014 4:00 PM BST
Linekar, er excuse me, your argument was going well until that point.
Report Stow_judge June 16, 2014 4:30 PM BST
He was world class at his best. He is now in the latter stage of a great career and has understandably taken a deeper role to prolong his career.
He has shown tremendous loyalty and has won the champions league at the club he loves. I'd have thought he's make the all time premier top team.
His honours include two FA Cups, three League Cups, two Community Shields, one Champions League, one UEFA Cup, and two Super Cups.
Report duffy June 16, 2014 4:45 PM BST
Very impressive, but we're talking about now.
Report duffy June 16, 2014 4:50 PM BST
and even at his best, he never did anything much for england, not alone mind you....and was brilliant for england.......arguable about the all time prem eleven......scholes keane and viera off the top of my head would all get in before him.
Report duffy June 16, 2014 4:50 PM BST
brilliant for liverpool that should beSilly
Report ZEALOT June 16, 2014 6:27 PM BST
He has never been world class . FACT .

Goes missing in all the top games - and has never done it for england .

walks about now too much for my liking - the most over rated player ever
Report kincsem June 16, 2014 7:54 PM BST
To the poster above who rubbished Gary Linaker.
Linaker scored ten goals in the World Cup.  That is a very solid claim to "world class".
Report iprefertolay June 16, 2014 8:12 PM BST
thank you kincsem
Report johnnyrant June 16, 2014 10:23 PM BST
A potentially great player in his pomp playing for England but sadly misued by stupid coaches like Eriksson who insisted on playing Lampard alongside him, which never worked (Lampard should have been dropped), and then Capello shoved Gerrard on the left which patently isn't Gerrard's position.

Gerrard should have been given free rein as an attacking central midfielder in his pomp, Lampard should have been nowhere near the team, and Owen Hargreaves should have been tasked with the holding role in centre mid.
Report stu June 17, 2014 6:42 PM BST
Beckham at his prime would certainly have got into the world-class group.

well said johnnyrant should've had the team built around him,but was played here there and everywhere just to accommodate inferior players.
Report A_T June 17, 2014 10:03 PM BST
he has to sit in front of the back 4 so the centre-halves can protect him - this leaves the centre of midfield woefully short and means our forwards players run around like headless chickens chasing long passes. should have been left out a long time ago.

Only thing he's achieved here is to inform his club that he's well past his sell by date, no premier title for you son your either going to be advised to retire or shipped out to some b*m club.
Report TheFlyingMuscovite June 23, 2014 1:29 PM BST
Overrated in my opinion. Has not made any contribution in years. Lampard has been a consistently better player and scored considerably more goals. By far and away the worse entry in the 100 caps club for England.
Report moondan June 23, 2014 2:09 PM BST
Nothing to explain, he aint a top, top player. Now who said that?

My race is short on class, long on delusion and I do not hide it from my kids.
Report TexassportsagentBuzz June 23, 2014 3:14 PM BST
His best years were under Benitez who was the only manager who knew what to do with him, play him wide right or behind Torres but a centre midfielder he isn't.
Report Homer Simpson June 23, 2014 3:14 PM BST
He doesn't get penalties playing for England.

Report Stow_judge June 23, 2014 9:36 PM BST
Many harsh comments imo. He has been among the best players in the premier league for a number of years, which is one of the most competitive leagues in the world. He has been an outstanding player.
Report cricketnut2 June 23, 2014 9:46 PM BST
For Liverpool, he's been outstanding, for England useless. However he has never ever been World Class or anywhere near it. Gerrard does no more, than what any other good player can do. World Class players can do something, few others can do, with Ronaldo, Messi and Saurez, the stand out players at the moment.
Report cricketnut2 June 23, 2014 10:04 PM BST
And as for English World Class players, well I agree, with the above poster on this, Moore, Banks and Gascoigne were totally World Class, Charlton was an exceptional player and Lineker was a great forward.

Bobby Moore had so much time on the ball and read the game superbly.
Gordon Banks, well there are no goalkeepers anywhere near his quality around any more and two saves
he made will live in my memory, one from Pele header, when he no right to get anywhere near it and a penalty save from Geoff Hurst in a League cup semi-final, against Stoke.

Paul Gasgoigne - a shame he couldn't handle the fame. A magic players, who was capable of nearly anything.
Report iprefertolay June 23, 2014 10:06 PM BST
england have not had world class players since, charlton, moore.banks and gascoigne(at his best)
Report Emden June 23, 2014 11:03 PM BST
I can't recall anyone (outside of Liverpool) that thinks Gerrard is world class.

He has been a good servant for LFC and England, but nowhere near world class.

I think Ashley Cole has been a world class left back for a long time.
Report jed.davison June 24, 2014 10:18 AM BST
You're right, and he still looked a world-class left-back this season when selected. Which does beg the question, what was that limited journeyman doing wearing his shirt for the last couple of weeks?

Rio Ferdinand was also a world-class central defender, despite being a Grade A berk.

Here is the knock on stevie g
Semi final of the European cup 2005 at the bridge
Gerrard giving the ball away for fun
Best player on the park was xabi alonso. Kept lfc in the game. The basque boy was different class.
Let's face facts
Stevie g's best game was in Istanbul where he chased up and down the left wing after Harry kewell got crocked.
Yet he refused to play in his best position
Gave Scholes an excuse to retire from international football
It's abundatly clear to me now
That England's first choice this past decade ought to have included joe cole and carrick
Had those two not been ruined at Chelsea and Man U
Playing long ball football
At champions league level at any rate
Had they stayed at west ham
Maybe with frank as an attacking midfielder
Things may have been different for dear old ingerlund
Ah well
Fluck em
