Or is he deliberately trying to keep Ross Barkley under wraps until the World Cup starts?

was thinking the same thing.

If England are to have any chance Barkley needs to start... he can create goals , he can score goals....

I watched him a lot this season.. the lad is potentially world class

Even the dogs in the street can see he is one of Englands best players.

i think Hodgson innate conservatism will result in Englands downfall.

playing safe will get us nowhere...England need to just go for it

Paul Scholes is right , they need to try and play like Liverpool...above us just entertain us for christsakes

look at the goals Barkley scored this season.. these are not tap ins.. these are world class goals

look at the way he can run and dribble with the ball and take on defenders... he has world class potential

he wouldnt look out of place in the brazil team.

all Im saying is that if he is given a chance Barkley can light up the tournament the same way Michael Owen did in 1998, or Rooney did in Euro 2004

England only have a chance of any kind in the World Cup if he leaves out the two players he thinks are undroppable - Gerrard and Rooney.

Hodgson is no different to the bores that have gone before, he's selected the young exciting prospects in the squad but when it comes to it, you'll see the usual boring don't lose backs to the wall types out there.

Please start talking about "world class" when a country wins a major trophy, or a player is the equal of Ronaldo or Messi.
Thant you for reading.

Half decent English talent = potentially world class...

Equilvant in a European team = run of the mill

remember Gascoigne didn't play in first game at wc in 1990 , steve McMahon played instead. Grin
Report Cauthenmeister June 1, 2014 8:05 PM BST
If I remember correctly Robson only stumbled upon his best team in 86 after the group had started as well.
Report iprefertolay June 1, 2014 8:35 PM BST
Lets not forget Hodgson was rubbish at Blackburn and Liverpool and subsequently sacked at both clubs.
However I feel sorry for all English managers as they can only chose from 28 per cent of players in the premiership as 72 per cent are foreign.
Until this changes and until our technical ability dramatically improves we will never do anything.
Report kincsem June 2, 2014 4:34 AM BST
The problem is football (or soccer) is a lower class game in England.  And everyone is now middle-class.

I think a Hodgson is mostly useless, but I actually think Barkley will be most effective coming off the bench in games. Doesn't quite do enough for 90 mins for me just yet.

Sterling had better fkn start against Italy, though.

Suspect he will against Ecuador given Roy's comments, so hopefully he'll shine.
Report morpteh mackem June 2, 2014 8:25 AM BST
hope he has b alls to drop rooney after Italy game
Report bardo June 2, 2014 8:52 AM BST
this will be the 3rd world cup in a row that Rooney has failed to deliver on his promise.

apart from Euro 2004 where he was fantastic for a few games, since then he has been utterly mediocre in finals tournaments

too much money and too little hunger

possibly wants to keep barkley fresh for the wc. it could be has a knock. but whatever is going on i cant believe he wont start every wc game
Report marychain1 June 2, 2014 10:22 PM BST
Hodgson supposedly wants to get England to play like Liverpool.

He couldn't even get Liverpool to play like Liverpool.

Why should this Barkley chap be a shoe in? Good season and a few goals. No champions league experience. No big game experience even. And people want him starting in a world cup? Lallana should be picked ahead of him on merit.
Report jed.davison June 3, 2014 2:16 AM BST
You're winding me up surely mr e? What experience of the top occasions does Lallana have? What experience did Gascoigne have, or Owen have? They should both be the proof that Barkley - and Lallana as well - should play. Who would have guessed that Gascoigne's World Cup in 1990 would be his last, or that Owen would rarely ever reproduce the brilliance he showed in France?

These boys are young, fearless and gifted. Get the known failures out, and give them a chance imho.

Barkley has scored some very good goals this season, but has also had games when he constantly gave the ball away, and delivered very little, you can't judge a player on the positive things he does alone. Sterling and Lallana would both start ahead of him on last seasons form (Everton selected him on a rotation basis)
Report G1_Jockey_4 June 3, 2014 11:55 AM BST
its irrelevant
england have no chance.

id be happy if we managed to beat costa rica but i suspect they may get something from that game.
Report duffy June 3, 2014 4:55 PM BST
Brian Moore's commentary when owen picked the ball up and ran at the argies for the goal...."He's worrying them again".....get fooking barkley on the pitch and let him worry them!!!
Report iprefertolay June 4, 2014 1:37 AM BST
woy is gonna play milner next game at right back?
hes a very average midfield player who runs around a bit.
I would play Barclay in midfield and stirling instead of Wellbeck.
Woy wont.
Report Clerkmore June 4, 2014 2:22 PM BST
There are no world class players in the England team.
Report McCoy Carp June 4, 2014 9:44 PM BST
^ Agree, but some, unfortunately, are on World Class wages.
