From previous winners its seems you need a flair player, someone who can score a few goals (7 of last 9 have scored 4+), 10 of last 12 have played in the final and 10 of last 12 have been 25 or older.

For me Messi @ 10/1 fits the bill, ok he has played poorly by his standards this season following his injury last year but at the odds I dont mind taking a chance he returns to his best as the tournament goes on.

I also like Reus @ 40/1 but only 1 european player has won it outside of europe (oliver khan) and after watching how knackered spain got in the confederations cup last year you can see why.

David Silva. I'm on at 66/1 but is availavble at 100/1. Most recognisable player from favourites. Liely to score a couple of goals, and is loved by those foreign folk.

I backed Di Maria at 150/1 for a chunky wager, brought the prices into 50/1 with 2 bookies.

For a regular started for the 2nd favourites who is the leading assist maker in European football with 17 it seemed rather generous.

Having said all that he will probably get injured in the Champs League Final !

Oscar at 50/1 may be worth considering though wasn't great domestically this season

Di Maria was the official MOM in the Champs League final, picked up a knock so not all good news for me though.

Into 33/1 with a couple of bookies following yesterday, so have to be pleased with my 150/1 !

he's a fair shout at the odds, particularly as he can play his best position for Argentina, he's also shown in the south american qualifiers that he can handle the harshest of conditions

Have had small wagers on Thiago Silva @66/1, James Rodriguez @125/1, D Silva @66/1 and Oscar @40/1. Creative midfielders and Number 10s to the fore I think.

Edin Dzeko 500/1, Kostas Mitroglu 1000/1 looked value when I was drunk yesterday !

Luckily I didn't waste my money though if Bosnia somehow sneaked through to Quarters maybe 500/1 is value, though hard to work out ifa 500/1 shot is value.
Mitroglu is surely priced up as a joke bet!

Where is Dzeko 500/1?

Probably Ladbrokes, he should be 5000/1.

does Di Maria start for Argentina? their attacking options are amazing, I don't know how you fit Messi, Aguero, Higuain and Di Maria into the same team

This might be an issue if di Maria was a striker and not a left-sided midfielder. Leaving Messi out might be the answer though.

Si-K you say it's a crap price for Neymar but yet you seem very sure he will win it. In that case 7-1 must be the bet of the century. I mean if you really think it's a certainty remortgage your home, sell your wife, children etc....

1978 Argentina[7]     Argentina Mario Kempes

1982 Spain     Italy Paolo Rossi

1986 Mexico     Argentina Diego Maradona

1990 Italy     Italy Salvatore Schillaci

1994 United States     Brazil Romário

1998 France     Brazil Ronaldo

2002 Korea/Japan     Germany Oliver Kahn

2006 Germany     France Zinedine Zidane

2010 South Africa     Uruguay Diego Forlán

The votes are all cast before the final is even played in it's entirety, hence zidane still winning in 06.

In all of the world cups only on 3 occasions has the winner come from teams no contesting the final, 1938, 1990, 2010.

Di Maria still being backed, the last of the 66's has gone, Dzeko still 500/1, my £15 hasn't scared the bookies as much as my £100 on Di Maria did!

Alexis Sanchez at a stand out 100/1 may be worth consideration in this market too.....

I see Yaya Toure has been backed at Hills, though still plenty of 150/1 left, is there any chance at all Ivory Coast could make the semis which is the requirement to win this award you would think, looks highly unlikely so maybe best left alone

had a tenner on Ross Barkley at 250/1 with vicktor

reckon he will have a big impact on the tournament

I hate to criticise a long shot as I love them, but would be a miracle if Barkley got enough minutes to be player of the tournament.

Much prefer Dzeko at 500/1 (who is being backed for Top Goalscorer after his brace yesterday)

Also pleased to see that Di Maria was backed at 22 on here for Player of the Ball after my large bet, 40/1 best you can get now.

Higaine looks a decent bet at 66/1 as he is much shorter odds for Top Scorer and if he wins that he would surely be fairly short odds to win the Golden Ball too.
Worth a saver having backed Di Maria I think.

Dzeko has finally come in from 500/1 ! (amazing how long it lasted)

James rodriguez from Colombia has a great chance to win this .. if he keeps on scoring and making assists

I've just invested a few sheckles on the German goalkeeper to be player of the tourney @16s... be handy if he can keep a clean sheet tonight (15 mins to go)... that will be his 4th of the tourney... probably need Holland to beat the Argies therefore reducing the chance of Messi copping the pot... ideal scenario will be a penalty shoot out in the final and Neuer to save the lot... Crazy

Boom! Messi played nowhere near his best but we're getting paid which is what matters

Have to say i think Reus would have gone mighty close, for me Germany's best player in qualification and at the top of his game before being injured in a wc warm up game
