Location - England struggle to win World Cups that aren't played at Wembley and will suffer from the altitude
Penalties - We're not good at them we've lost five of our last six ( See Portugal )
Portugal - if we play them we're out.
Suarez -  Palace are going to have to take a red for the good of the country and crock him for us to get out of the group.
Flair - we don't have it, don't recognise it and can't play against it.

The don't like it up 'em up the jungle.
Chelsea pensioner and "world greatest player" can't play (together) in midfield.
Rooney will put on a stone weight before a ball is kicked.
England managers try to satisfy top clubs by picking their players.
They don't have a great goalscorer / centre-forward.

Fear of failure seems to be the biggy for me where England are concerned (ignoring the fact they're just not good enough). Any England supporter (and I use that phrase mildly) would just be happy to see them go out and try and play some decent stuff and see what happens, but the players will be so scared of making a mistake, twinned with Roy's rather cautious approach the game anyway, we'll likely to see three very stagnant performances before they're on the plane home.

Pack the team full of pace and players who are in form (over reputation) and full of confidence (off the back of good seasons) and tell them to go out there and enjoy it. Do that and they might just surprise a few people and reach the quarter finals!

1) England are really bad at football
2) English players are inferior
3) English players lack skills
4) England are tactically poor
5) English players are physically weak
Report jed.davison April 24, 2014 1:38 AM BST
The main reason why everyone thinks England can't do well is because they have seen them perform so shockingly in the past. It's not unreasonable to say that we were the least technically accomplished team to take part in the last World Cup, but people have overlooked the fact that of the eleven who took the field against Germany, only Gerrard and Rooney are likely to start the opening match this time round, and only Carrick - perhaps - will remain of the substitutes that day.

It's easy to use hoary old chestnuts about English players lacking skill, but the players who will take their places in the side this summer lack no skill - they may lack experience, they may not have the bitter taste of repeated Major Tournament failure in the back of their mouths, but they will not suffer in comparison with most of their competitors.

And Roy Hodgson might surprise you - of course he is almost a caricature of the lugubrious world-weary old-timer, but he's a football man with decades of knowledge of the International game, and this will be the first time he has nurtured an England squad to compete at a tournament. He knows that caution will not work and that young legs will be required, importantly he knows the sort of characters who help a squad to unite - he has been very explicit on this point after his experiences with Switzerland.

I'm not suggesting that England will win the World Cup, merely that Hodgson is the first manager in decades who will be able to give them the best chance of doing so. I also believe that we have players who can damage other teams, and one should not underestimate the importance of freshness - without tempting fate, all of the players who are in realistic contention to start seem fit, and most have missed patches of the season so should not be burnt out.

It seems almost crazy to contemplate the plausibility of England not stinking out the entire tournament as usual, but I reckon they've got a puncher's chance of doing all right.
Report geordie1956 April 24, 2014 7:41 PM BST
If they go to play without fear and don't simply try to stifle the opposition I would agree but I very much doubt Hodgson will allow a free flowing game of football - his innate character & temperament is to keep it tight and play the English way. He cannot & will not change all of the habits learned and used throughout his managerial career.
Report jed.davison April 24, 2014 11:30 PM BST
I agree that Hodgson is innately cautious - that can never be a bad thing. Brazil aside, Italy and Germany have done the best in World Cups, and it's rarely been by overdoing the flair.

My point is that he can set the team up the way he wants, but if he puts the right men in key forward positions, the attacking side of it will take care of itself.

He seems to insist on continuing to pick Gerrard, fair enough I guess if that's what he thinks is right. Personally I think some of the inside-forwards he will be up against will expose his age and positional indiscipline, but perhaps Hodgsdon will feel it is a step too far to cast the captain aside - it certainly looks that way.

If Gerrard plays, it's even more important that Henderson also plays. Gerrard and Henderson, behind Lallana Sterling and Barkley, with Sturridge centre-forward is how I'd go. Of course he'll pick Rooney and Sturridge and play an entirely different system but what does he know ;)

Around 30% I what I see quoted for English players % in the Premier League.
So 20 teams x 11 players x 30% = a pool of 66 English players to fill a World Cup squad of 23 players.
Did 23 players get in the squad and [u]only 43 miss out/u]?
Please, please point out my calculation errors.
Report grinchus May 20, 2014 1:14 PM BST
One thing you miss in your calculation is that other countries (perhaps Italy aside) do not rely on their home league for the international team and can produce players that Barcelona or Inter or Bayern are interested in. It is not the lack of English players in the premiership, but the lack of English players at the top level all over Europe that demonstrates the gap.
Report raspberrybottom May 20, 2014 6:03 PM BST
Basically, the 5 reasons are:

the back four (any permed from the seven or so we've got)

and the keeper.

All shockingly over-rated.

Mind you, there are quite a few other awful-looking teams in this World Cup.
Report differentdrum May 31, 2014 9:33 AM BST
How bad where they last time? Nothing short of an absolute disgrace. That should have been last chance saloon for the lot of them, Rooney included.

Now it's even more difficult. You can imagine Rooney gasping for an oxygen tank after a few minutes.

Chances pretty well summed up by the inclusion of Danny Welbeck. It comes to something when it seems we are picking players based on running about a lot. Are there any prices on the worst finisher in the tournament?

Expectations are the lowest I can remember.

Not that they would win it with a different manager but with Roy they have a minuscule chance compared to an outside chance. His tactics only encourage trepidation and fear of the opposition.

Report wallis June 4, 2014 4:27 PM BST
Milner is an experiment to see if he can provide cover for Johnson if needed.  Rooney is because he isnt fit , is overweight and would sweat the place out in 5 minutes if having to run about up front.

Its like school football , put the sh.. kid out on the wing where they do least damage.

1 Their most impressive performer in the warm up games Oxlade Chamberlain looks like he's injured
2 Rooney does the odd trick thinks he's impressed everyone than falls back to sleep and dreams about all the money he's raking in at United
3 The defence is absolutely clueless wtf is Smalling doing in the squad he's utter sh*te
4 Milner is fu**ing retarded judging by some of his play
5 One of Englands other promising players Sterling lacks experience and in trying to impress will likely break some poor f**kers ankles and get sent off probably when England are playing well for once and leading against one of the better teams always happens England find a way to F*ck themselves.

ps i would rip those England flags down now after watching the beginning of the self destruction tonight

Oxlade Chamberlain out for 2 weeks but may still go if the strained ligaments show sufficient recovery prior to the Italy game.
Report cricketnut2 June 5, 2014 10:10 PM BST
Out for 2 weeks, so he's out of the tournament, because it will take longer to fully recover and its only 21/2 weeks before, we are probably out of the World Cup. You look at Englands squad, who is creative? goalkeeper likely to make a mistake and any half decent defence, will shut us out and thats before we get to can't take penalties, in a shoot out.
Report 247lol June 6, 2014 7:30 PM BST
They're giving him till 24 hours prior till Italian game to prove he will be fit enough to play a part in the world cup and latest is Oxlade Chamberlain and is upbeat.
"He's been working with the physios the last couple of days and let's hope it's not that serious.

"There will not even be a question of him leaving us. His mood is good, and our mood regarding his injury is good."

Hodgson has not yet contemplated who would replace the 20-year-old in the squad, but says the decision would not vex him.

"There's no need for us to consider that yet," Hodgson added.

"We've spent so much time discussing this squad over the past two months it won't be difficult for us, if necessary, to come up with the right solution."
Fingers crossed.
