Well said.
You would of thought someone else would of started a thread about this. |

Easy to say without knowing his instructions (if any).
Webb gave more fouls and more cards per game than any other WC ref. And he made several early bookings. So hard to claim he was soft. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/world-cup-2010/teams/7823279/Statistics-World-Cup-2010.html He may have been asked to keep 22 players on the field for as long as possible. Though I agree that the Dutch made that task very difficult and he should have sent people off sooner. |

I do agree he may have been giving instructions to keep players on the pitch. Fifa as usual are clueless. Refs if they are good enough (which at the world stage should be) should be allowed ref the game as they see it. Last night needed a sending off sooner as the dutch had no interest in playing football and more interest in kicking lumps out of the spainish. Spain then started doing it as i think they had enough of getting kicked off the park.

You guys have obviously never reffed a game in your lives. I thought Howard Webb had an ok game in the circumstances and got most of the big decisions right. It is natural to want to keep 11 v 11 at all times unless you are left with no choice, particularly as this was the biggest game in world football. In the case of last night, the players gave him no help at all with their pathetic whingeing, diving and injury feigning. It is the players and their behaviour you should be focusing on,not the referee. There are 22 guys trying to con the referee, he is the only honest one on the pitch.

To be fair to him it was one of those games where only having the Yellow or Red options wasn't enough.
Funnily early on I thought he booked quite lightly, then of course gave the same (yellow) for much worse fouls that would often be reds. He needed the 'orange' option - worse than a yellow but not a red. |

If the players are behaving like that its up to him to start lay the law down. He didnt and saying you should always try to keep 22 players on the park is not right. If the players are kicking lumps out of each other then fukkk them and start sending players off. The karate kick on the spainish player was a disgrace. You do that on the street you would get six months in jail.

In addition to goal line technology, isn't it about time the yellow and red card system was abolished and a sin-bin style punishement brought in like rugby league ? That way, teams are being penalised for foal play but the game is not being ruined as a spectacle.

Yes - that's the 'orange' card version I was alluding to.

Yes..nobody would have moaned that he had spoiled the game.... if it had been 11 V 9 by half time..

Webb was in an impossible situation. He didn't want to be the ref who sent off 2 or even 3 players in a WC game. Who would??
He gave the players every chance to improve on their behaviour but they were moronic and I don't just mean the Dutch. The Spanish were in his face all night and did their best to get him to show red. A filthy night for football. |

Thought the ref in the circumstances where he was getting no help from the players had an excellent game . He got all the calls in play right . Whether he should have shown ref is another matter. In a normal match the Dutch could possibly have had 8 players left on the pitch at half time .Who wants to be remembered as the ref that done that in a World Cup final?. When it became obvious to the Dutch of the Refs reluctance to produce a red card it encouraged them . Blame the players ,not the ref.

Van Bommell and DeJong were both red card offences.
Are we saying its ok to do that in a WC Final?? Should not matter what game, result should be the same.If Ref had sent both off he would have done his job correctly, and the blame would be firmly with the Dutch, and what followed would not have if he had. As it is the blame is either with the ref or those that employ him. |

yellow was correct. |

You havin a laugh??
|

watch again.
youll see DeJong borderline, certainly no intent. VB never a red. even you must agree Spain don't help themselves with their continual screaming and rolling about. |
|

If this ref had been a foreigner and not English he would have been getting crucified.
Their is no excuses for him - he bottled it - along with a number of wrong decisions his performance was shocking |

AWK,
I dont need to see either again, but i think you do. |

Yes,Spain did play act somewhat, and that unfortunately is now commomplace in Football, everywhere. But those 2 incidents of GBH would have had anyone reacting like that, absolute awful challenges, and i would wager that had they been in the premiership webb would have shown red cards.

buddeliea: we clearly see things differently. all the best.

fair enough
cheers |

Borderline? Intent plays no role in this instance, studs up that high which makes significant contact with the opposing player is an automatic red. The relief on De Jong's face as he realized Webb was giving him a yellow was telling. |

As Redknapp said if hes our best i wouldnt like to see the worst
