About 3 years ago we arranged a dads versus lads football match on Doncaster Rovers ground, Belle Vue, in the year it was closing before they moved to the Keepmoat. The football team manager is a detective and knows Howard well so asked if he would come down and ref the match for us, which he did for free. He brought with him a young lad called Danny who it turns out Howard spotted reffing a local match and immediately took him under his wing and is now mentoring him.
About a month later Howard presented the awards at the lads presentation evening and did a Q&A session for the lads which was very entertaining and full of interesting stuff. Again it was at no cost or trouble.
After the event he said to me "was that alright? I didn't know whether to say 'a premier league footballer' or say the players name as I don;t want it to come across as big headed or anything like that". He also used the expression "I am just a Yorkshire lad" quite a lot, and meant it.
Very unassuming and nothing was too much trouble. Very well dserved tonight and I feel sure Howard and his team will make the country proud, unlike some overpaid prima donnas who had a trip to South Africa terminated prematurely.
