This looks like a three-horse race priced up as a match.

Villa & Schneider 7/4 each of two, 6/1 Xavi, 10s bar.

The recent media buzz has been all about the three named above with the rest nowhere.

So on a point of value, bet Xavi.

I suspect the market is distorted by shop punters (and staff) confusing the Golden Ball with the Golden Boot.

Which suggests another reason for backing Xavi. Voters might ignore the strikers because they are also in line for the other award.

If it is value you are looking for then Diego Forlan is the bet. He He has carried an otherwise very ordinary Uruguayan team to the semi's and if he scores tonight it could clinch it for him.

Current odds available of 33/1 are way too long, considering most of the voting is usually done before the final is played.

Forlan, if he plays a blinder, will have a good chance but that is a big if. It might mean there is a case for waiting till (say) half time.

But this is an award voted on by journalists, and there have not been that many column inches devoted to Forlan. Hacks seem to acknowledge his greatness then move on.

totally agree with Forlan being value at the price, has anyone ever won this award when not been playing for the winning team?

Anyone know when the G Ball winner is chosen? Rumour had it in 2006 that the vote took place during half-time of the Final....which explains why Zidane got the vote.
