This is for oldies like me.

I remember the 66 world cup final so I have a few to choose from. The 1970 Brazil team were pretty amazing, but i actually think the 1982 Brazil team with Falcao, Zico and Socrates was even better.
The Dutch side that were robbed by Jack Taylor in Germany were special, and I actually think that the current Spain side are a truly great team.

My all time best national team were the 1982 brazil - who are yours?

The Spain team is possibly the best ,just seem to dominate every opponent even when not on form.

I thought France between 1999 and the 2002 World Cup were awesome. West Germany in 1990, at least in the first 4 games were tremendous, and Holland from 87-90.

Brazil were fantastic in '82 certainly, though defensively a bit dodgy.

Not seen too much before then, though apparently the highest ELO rating for any team was Hungary in 1954 Happy

The current Spain team is the best national team ever. The current Barcelona side is the best club side ever.

Have to agree with the 82 team. the more I watch some of the goals they scored in the that World Cup the better they look. One of the few teams that made the game look easy. Didn't even seem to be trying at times. Probably they weren't that's why they lost. Socrates was like some thing out of the Harlem globetrotters.

dunno about best.. germany in 1990 were good..

my fav are that brazil side or the danish side of 1986..

football seemed less restricted then.. none of the ones since seemed to have such unhibited glory.. might seem over the top but you needed to see the teams then i think..

The Brazilian side of 82 were too good for their own good.

It is probably their defeat the reason no team has played the game so beautifully since.

The 84' French team with Platini ,Giresse and Tigana were pretty good

of the others mentioned i remember the 82' Brazil team 2 great full backs Leandro and Junior i think and although everyone mentions zico socrates, falcao etc...i always remember the left winger Eder who was best of the lot

they did have a centre forward Serginho who made heskey look quite clinical though

Eder's goal against Russia is my all time favourite, just sheer joy.
Report Sunset Cristo July 9, 2010 2:45 PM BST
Ye Eder's goal is one of the best ever. Doesn't get the credit it deserves. Italy have a lot to answer for . Beating them. Football has not been the same since. Teams play to win now before entertaining. Even Brazil do it now

The answer is Hungary early/mid 1950s.

More recently, I'd say Brazil 1970, Brazil 2002, Germany 1990 and France 1984 were the best I've seen.
Report baracouda30 July 10, 2010 6:18 AM BST
And I'd put Spain over the last couple of years in the mix as well.
Report the lay preacher July 10, 2010 8:25 AM BST
nothing will ever match the brazil team of 1970.
the greatest team ever to set foot on a football pitch .
there is really nothing else left to say.

This Spain team are not going to go away either. They could mop up loads of tournies over the next ten years. They're the best I've seen already, Argentina 1978 were the best I've seen until now, but only had one big tournie in them. Half-remember the Germany 1974 team, but apparently they were awesome in 1972.

1. 1966 England (banks, moore, charlton.......forget gerrard, lampard, terry, etc..)
2. 1982 Brazil
3. 1984 France
Report CLYDEBANK29 July 10, 2010 11:53 AM BST
The current England team would hammer the WC winning team of 66 imho.  The professionalism of the game, fitness, pace and phsyique of the players has moved on massively since then.  Comparing sport in the 60s to the current day is like comparing

The Dutch team of 88, The German Team of 90, The Brazil team of 82 and 02, and the Spanish team of 08 and 10 were the best relative to their opponents imo since 78 which is earliest I could offer an opinion on.
Report BobSievier July 10, 2010 12:54 PM BST
I recently re -watched the 1970 Brazil v Italy World Cup final , while there is no denying the quality of the Brazilians the Italian defence in that match were truly appalling .
Report PLASTIC PADDY July 10, 2010 2:00 PM BST
Brazil 1982
France 1982-1984
Holland late 80's to about 1992
Denmark mid eighties

1982 Brazil team the best I have ever seen. Socrates, Falcao, Eder and Cerezo in midfield with Zico just ahead. The French team of that year were beginning to bloom too. Platini, Tigana and Giresse were a formidable combo even before Fernandez joined in. My dad harps on about Brazil 1970 and from what I have seen they were special (I think Gerson is cruelly underatted in that side)and I hear stories about Hungary in the early fifties.
Someone posted that the current England team would be too strong for the 66 side. They would probably be fitter but I don't think a team with Moore, Banks and Charlton would struggle against a team that can't hold on to the ball.
