I think Souness may have a point. Some of the players like Rooney who are usually bristling with purpose and energy looke totally out of sorts. There must be an explanation.

They couldn't shoot dribble or pass, this may have had some affect on their performance in the 2010 world cup.
Report Eeternaloptimist June 30, 2010 1:40 AM BST
Fair points but that still doesn't explain the lethargy of some of the players. Guys who can run up and down all day were simply never at the races.

Actually, joking aside he makes some very interesting and valid points.  Looking at in hindsight he appears to have been spot on.

An interesting point Souness makes there. Also, something that has not been mentioned yet, but possibly another factor that may have disorientated our players - water goes down the plughole in the opposite direction in the southern hemisphere. Was there enough preparation made on this score? Rooney, having a wet shave perhaps, could have fatally stared at that swirling water and subconsciously been thrown out of kilter. We need answers, God damn it!!!

Many reasons:

Not a major power: one win; one 4th place in 18 tourneys. *
Soccer is not a dominating sport in England (small player pool).
Players drawn from the diminishing working class (bleak future).
Team picked on media image, not on play.  Beckham the worst example.
Physical weeding out?  Who was dropped? Germany squad physical tests in February.
Team picked for a game, not for seven games.
Insufficient altitude training in Austria (not high enough).
Outside influences on manager's selection (FA; media)
Listening to player's opinions.  Alf Ramsey would have dropped them permanently for it.
They had a "nice" break of a few weeks (Rooney said).  Fitness lost.

* please, please, please do not tell me they didn't take part in the early World Cups.  I know.

Report mayway June 30, 2010 5:32 PM BST
So, you're saying that Beckham was only ever picked because of his image? And that he didn't warrant selction based on his ability?

LOL! You don't know much about football if you think that. Maybe you could be the next England manager. Make sure you pick people that nobody has ever heard of to ensure that selctions are "honest" and not being tainted by the media. Also, make sure that you only select clueless fookwits so they won't have any opinions.

I'd vote for you.

Beckham was a passenger for about the last five years.  I know enough about football to put 1,700 on Germany at 15s when most of Betfair was bigging up England for the semis and their money had them in third spot in the betting.  Beckham is a product placement sports icon; Pepsi; club shirts.
Report kincsem June 30, 2010 6:30 PM BST
And these Coronation Street soap opeara type fans were putting Beckham forward as England manager during the week.  Laughable.

Alf Ramsey knew how to deal with the media and the players.  He was the boss.  Nobody else was allowed an opinion because only one person picks the team.

John Terry should have been put on the next flight back to England when he tried to oust Capello last week.

Examples of Ramsey's control.

Geoff Hurst, World Cup final hat-trick hero to Alf Ramsey after the celebrations.  "See you, Alf"  Ramsey "Will you?"

Alf Ramsey to television reporter at the airport in Canada just after he got got off the aircraft "Now I'll have a few words with World Cup winning manager, Alf Ramsey".  Response "No you f****** won't".

The England players are media ****s.  They are no good.  They have not beaten a major team in the World Cup in forty years.

Beckham: three goals in three World Cups, none outfield ...

... or as it says on his Wikipedia page under RECORDS

With his free kick goal against Ecuador in the second round of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Beckham gained membership into two of football's exclusive clubs: he became the only English player — and the 21st player regardless of nationality — to score in three world cups; Real Madrid teammate Raúl also achieved this feat a few days earlier.[172] It also made him only the fifth player in World Cup history to score twice from a direct free kick.

Amazing how such a poor goal tally in three World Cups: three goals; two from free kicks, and one a penalty, can be a record.
Report Haslam June 30, 2010 8:37 PM BST
come on Kincsem,Beckham carried England through the last two world cups.

you single him out and say he was a passenger but you could say that about a most of the England players..Gerard,Lampard etc..were you one of the ones slagging off Beckham 5 or so years ago saying they should put Wright-Phillips in instead I wonder?Laughable then and now.

It was Beckhams assits that really made the differance not only in the world cup but the qualifyers aswell.I made a mental note and for a number of years a large percentage of England goals Beckham had involved in.A damn site more than anybody else.

It was no surprise this year without him we struggled,Algeria would of been a typical example where England playing badly only to be rescued by a Beckham cross.
Report kincsem June 30, 2010 9:23 PM BST
Didn't Beckham pretend to be injured so he wouldn't have to play in an international?
He was almost begging to be given his 100th cap.
Three goals in three World cups.  No goals from play.

And in the World Cups Beckplayed played you struggled then
One round of 16; two quarter-finals.

The thing is kincsem you're criticising Beckham without saying who should have played instead. Pretty pointless really, he was the best they had but still wasn't enough imo.

Putting words in my mouth?

This is what I said:
Team picked on media image, not on play.  Beckham the worst example.
Physical weeding out?  Who was dropped? Germany squad physical tests in February.

Your team in the round of 16 had an average age of 28.5 outfield; Germany 25.4.

By picking John Terry(29), Frank Lampard (32); Steven Gerrard (30); Matthew Upson (31); Gareth Barry (29); Ashley Cole (29) you gave Germany a massive advantage.  This showed for the 3rd and 4th goals where Schweinsteiger (25) and Muller (20) broke; then Ozil (21) and Mueller (20).

Who should you play instead?  Just pick the best young players.  but don't do it a couple of months before.  They should be in the team a year before (as in 1966).  Don't keep the old reliables as they can't do the business.

The average age on the England 1966 winning team was 25.

Average age of finals teams (incl GK)

Finals    Win    Lose
1970    26.9    28.1
1974    27.1    26.1
1978    25.3    28.4
1982    26.6    26.2
1986    26.7    30.0
1990    27.8    27.1
1994    28.5    28.1
1998    28.3    29.3
2002    26.6    28.4
2006    29.6    30.0

England 2010 incl GK 29.5
England 2010 excl GK 28.5

England's team was as old as the Italian team of 2006, the oldest winners, who won against the oldest finalists, France.

Some would say the age of the goalkeeper doesn't count.  Would you still say that after David James was slow out for the first Germany goal?

Interestingly the older goalkeeper was on the losing side in 7 of the last 10 finals.

Beckham was one of the biggest culprits for our WC exits in 98 and 02. In 98 his petulant kick of Simeone that led to his sending off. In 02, he ducked out of a challenge which led to the Brazil equaliser just before half-time.
Report unbiased July 1, 2010 1:29 PM BST
Some of the players being derided have played against some of the best in the Champions League and played well against them. When players perform poorly and YOU KNOW FOR SURE that they can do much better then there are other issues that have to be faced.
