Both players were exceptional in big tournaments when they got the chance for England - would/should they have played?

Ahead of the saviour Gareth Barry!? Surely not...

Fergie was never going to let Hargreaves play

As for Carrick, it's a mystery. Play quite possibly the worst player I have ever seen in Barry and not give Carrick a minute.

Barry must have photos of Cappello in compromising positions, because he makes Geoff Thomas look like Garrincha

If Hargreaves was match fit he should have played yes, but he's not.  Mind you Barry didn't exactly look match fit himself did he?

Never rated Carrick myself only ever seems to pass the ball backwards, rubbish in front of goal and hasn't had a great season.

I think we need/needed a Cattermole or Huddlestone in there to sit back and protect the back four.

carrick should have played imo as he's about the only midfield player we have who keeps the ball. Unfortunately in the pre world cup friendly in which he played he had probably his worst game for England. Think that made Cappello's mind up to play Barry

I honestly thought Cappello would be different and not have favourites (like Sven did) yet he continued to play Barry and Rooney even though they played so baldly in the group games. OK, Crouch might not be as good as Rooney in most people's eyes, but look at his goal record for England. Can you imagine the joy he would have got off Milner's crosses? Carrick should have played the holding role, because unlike Barry he will actually sit and protect the back four. I also consider him one of the best passer of the ball in the game. Admittedly he played a poor game in a friendly, but hey, its not like he was the only one!!! I'd like to see Harry given the job, I'm sure you'd see a much better England under him.

As a city fan I dream of taking on a united Midfield of carrick and Hargreaves, they are 2 players who just do not hurt teams at all, they would be an un-productive central midfield for england. Jimmy Bullard/Danny Murphy offer more than either of these 2. The holding midfielder is the most over-rated position in world football. Alonso would be insulted to be called a holding midfielder and he has probably been one of the best players in this tournament.
