Best players dont make the best team. England have 2 quality attacking full backs. Sticking 2 holding midfield players in the team will free up the full backs a little and help shore up what has proved a very leaky defence and I blame the midfield as much as the defence for that. Lampard is also 31. Muamba was arguably Englands most important player in the Euro U21s where they did get to the final.
Lampard is a great player and better than Gerrard imo but he just strikes me as a square peg in a round hole for England. I dont see where he fits in.

The England players are also nowhere near as good as the press make them out to be. They are an ageing team past their best and their best wasnt good enough.

Huddlestone for me is a future England captain, his passing is the best in the english game,2 wide will get lots of ball,Gerrard will be in his best position, and plan b would always be crouch. Would love to see an up and coming centre half, but the key to top level international football seems to be pace and having a player in the hole. Its not rocket science and i would gladly do the job for a lot less than 2 million a year!! oh and would also be able to commicate with my players and instill passion and energy.

Interesting that when England won 2-1 in Germany and dominated the game they had 2 holding midfield players in Carrick and Barry and none of Gerrard Lampard or Rooney played

its a strange phenomenon how barrys become part of the team. you cant have him as a get it and give it player as hes too slow to get and passes the ball to poorly to give it.ive got a feeling we will have to forget 442 and play 3 across the back and 2 wingbacks.obviously when fit ferdinand is one of the 3 at the back i cant even =suggest who the other 2 should be, altho the young kid at man city has been put forwrd, whoever they are they must be quick.3 midfielders gerrard +2(dont know who, not lampard as we need young blood added, maybe this rodwell guy, the wingbaCKS ALMOST MACKING IT A 5 MAN MIDFIELD.2 up rooney + maybe crouch. out must go terry barry and any other slow coach.obviously the wingbackjs being cole and johnson.

Can't catch me - sorry if I sound like David Pleat, but I like the shape here. Looks more defensively solid than our current system. However, with injuries, there's little chance of us seeing either Hargreaves or Rio again at the top level.
Trouble with England is that we seem to be able to bully the 'smaller' teams in qualifying with 4-4-2, yet to go on and achieve something at a tournament really takes a different formation and as we never play that way, we can't really hope to switch. Didn't we play with three centre backs in 1990 - given our frailties at the centre of defence, perhaps this is an option - though you'd have to sacrifice one of your holding players.
One final thought - I see much is made of youngsters like Rodwell, Wilshere and Gibbs, but we must realise that these players need a lot more time - and they might not develop in line with their promise.

Keep Cole and Rooney, get the rest of them out. If we don't qualify for Euro 2012, so be it. Forget results, just get the same team playing every time so they can be ready to not absolutely stink out another World Cup.

goalkeeper - James Cordon defence - Bobby Davro, Ant & Dec, Rollo (from Faithless) midfield - Ricky Gervais, Russell Brand, Jack Dee, Dale Winton forwards - Abi Clancy, Cheryl Cole
Cordon could be a tremendous shot stopper and long overdue we try the Clancy/Cole partnership up front.
