ok thanks, you no when you lay a bet how do you no its been placed?

1) if you lay or back a bet on here has someone got to match the bet for it to come into affect

The odds available and the amount of money available at those odds in on the screen for that event.
If you do not like the prices e.g odds of 10 are offered but you want 11, then you can "bet" at 11 (put up the amount you want at 11) and it might be matched later as it won't be matched then as it isn't available.

2) or will betfair itself take bets off you?

Betfair are not involved in making the prices or offering the amounts of money.  We, the betters, do that.  I am guilty of doing it myself.

3) also how do you no if your bet has been placed do you actualy speak to someone or do you get a message etc?

There is a My Bets tab at the top of the box on the right of the screen.  When the bet is matched it is listed there.

4) when you want to put money on your account what other ways can you do it besides using a bank card?

I don't know.  I use my credit card.  There is a Help button on the top left of the screen where all these questions are answered.

thank you very much for that :-)

eg if the back price is 2 and the lay price is 2.06 and you want to lay you could lay at 2.06 knowing that ur bet is placed, or u could lay at 2 or 2.02 and wait for it to get matched

sound, do you find it better laying the bets or backing them?
Report kincsem June 29, 2010 1:19 AM BST
Just be very careful when you are betting.

You can lay a team when you intended to bet on that team.  Just stop and thing a bit before you hit the button.  Everyone has made that mistake.

A good way to get started is to back something at a big price in an event that takes a long time to play (or where the market is up for many months).  This way you bet small amounts at big prices so you don't lose much.

Then is your selection drops in price because they are doing well you can lay at the lower price.  You pocket the difference between the higher price you bet at and the lower price at which you laid.

An example would be backing Germany back in April for £10 at 15 to win the World Cup.  That is a potential £150 payout.  They are doing well so their price is now 8.6 and if you lay you get £17.44 now (£150/8.6).  Of course you could wait and see if they win the World Cup and collect £150.

nice one kincsem i am starting to get the idea now, have you been on here a while you seem to no the score!! do you do well on here or is it pretty much 50/50? i would never of backed germany or argentina before the world cup cos of the way they were playing but they have stepped it up now havent they and look good value.

turned out nice again george ...why dont you go and play with your little stick of blackpool rock

Yeah. I've been here a while.

Over the last six months I put 1,730 euro on Germany in bits and pieces at an average 15.2 for a potential 25k win.  In the last week I laid off 2,000 euro at 9s.  So now I have my money back, a guaranteed profit of 270 euro, with a possible 9,700 is the Germans win the lot.

I did the same with Luiz Suarez in the top goalscorer.  I bet 69 euro on Suarez, most at 180 but some at 600 plus.  When he scored his third goal I sold out most of it for 708 euro.  But I backed six players for top scorer: Suarez; Ribery; Podolski; Tiago; Honda; Vittek, some of these after they scored but were still at a big price (e.g. 5 euro on Tiago at 407 after he scored two goals; small bet big odds.)

I try not to stay around until the final result, but to get in at a big price, and if the price drops, take a profit.
