I urge you to look up those very good English teams and it seems to me only Rooney and Ashley Cole would have made our starting line-ups in 1990 or 98 where we had very good teams and still couldn't get to the final (admittedly extremely unlucky)

and this illustrates that our current side is not very good

The euro 96 side which was probably the last 'decent' english side, would have run rings around todays lot. Shearer and Sheringham against Terry and Upson Laugh and Gazza was on a different planet compared to the statues we have in midfield now.

I think the Italia 90 team was pretty poor too.

Lineker and Beardsly were a class apart, but we didn't exactly cover ourselves in glory during the tournament.

We only managed to win one group game (1-0 Egypt) and beating Cameroon and Belgium by single goals in the KO stages hardly marked us out as top notch.

The tourny is remembered because of THAT game, but there were calls for Robson's head pre-tournament and I think history will judge the side of 1990 is a more favourable light than was perhaps deserved.

stuart pearce, gascoigne and shilton were in that team as well tho and alng with the centre halves they'd have walked into yesterdays team

yes how we would have loved a des walker in yesterday's line-up

walker, butcher and wright were all better players than terry and upson

agreed

They might have been better players theoretically, but you can't deny that the performances in Italia 90 were adequate at best.
For me, it will always be a tournament judged on that one magnificent game when the reality was that we were genuinely lucky to have got anywhere near the semi-final.

it wasnt a vintage world cup and we were the best team in it though

Psychic Mutley is bang on, memories of the 1990 team are always very different from reality. To consider them anywhere near as good as the West Germany 1990 side is just wrong for me. West Germany were not the only team clearly better than England, I would add Italy (albeit at home).

shilton could have played blindfold compared to what we have now.

in fact perhaps he should still be playing - caught with his @rse out the window of his jag if i remember rightly
Report Happy Valley June 28, 2010 7:01 PM BST
i can't have that at all, we p!ssed all over them in the semi-final, they were so lucky to get the draw and win on penalties
Report garbold June 28, 2010 7:07 PM BST
the last good side england was 1970 best side ye ever had.
Report Baz June 28, 2010 7:10 PM BST
We played very well in the Germany match, for the 1st time in the tournament. Germany played well throughout, other than the Colombia match.
