1. Only 8 teams will get further than England in this WC. So joint 9th in the world isn't that bad a result. Plus, we went out to Germany, yet again not put out by lesser teams (unlike France and Italy).

2. We finsihed ahead of both previous WC finalists (France and Italy).

3. All those going on about skill and lack of ability in Englands players - the piece of sublime skill shown by Lampard, under pressure, lobbing the keeper to perfectly angle off the crossbar and into the goal - I don't recall a better piece of skill from anyone else in the match, English or German.

England were beaten by 3 goals so that would make them 16th in the World in all probability.

They are a very average side and played rubbish football here and we should be pleased that more techinically skillful and entertaining teams remain for us to enjoy.

I'm glad that they are out and I'm English.

Trouble is we were the worst of those sides beaten in the last 16, regardless of who loses those games and worse still, we were the worst side at the World Cup. Don't kid yourself, England, whoever is manager will again struggle just to qualify for the next European Championships

I think everyone is already aware that Lampard is a very good player and one of the few that is technically gifted within the England squad. Gerrard (if he'd cut back on his glory passes, Rooney (although blatantly burned out), Joe Cole and to a lesser extent Milner are the others. Them aside players with an ability to create is a major deficiency.

What will the starting 11 be for the friendly against Hungary in August?

Adam Johnson, Joe Hart and Bent/Cole/Walcott/Gabby should be involved imo. Need to start preparing for the future straight away, this squad is only going to get worse.

Agree about Hart and Walcott definitely.

Get Jack Rodwell in now either in midfield or even at centre back. He'll be our best player in 4 years time so sensible to get him in asap. Certainly should be in the squad at the very least. The boy oozes class.

it's funny how when you boys are still in the competition you genuinely believe you can win it, and it will be the same next time round theres no doubt about it. But as seen in the last 20 years the last 16/ quarters is your upper limit, be happy!

I never really believed we'd win it - our players aren't better than several other countries in there, and I wouldn't waste a penny backing us. But equally I don't jump straight on our players' backs just because we lost to another country.

Just pointing out on here that we're not as bad as some try to make out. Funny to think that if Green hadn't let that dodgy shot in against the USA we'd probably have avoided the Germans and quite possibly got past Ghana and into the quarters. Fine margins really.

Oh, and we got cheated yesterday anyway, so we haven't really lost yet, lol

You're polishing a turd.  Very patriotic, but it would be better for English football if realism took hold.

England were third favourites for this World Cup, but had not a glimmer of a chance.  Will they wake up before 2014?  The Emperor is not wearing any clothes.  Would someone please point that out?

England are not world class.  None of the players is, or was world class.  None of them has been beyond the last eight in a World Cup.  England haven't been beyond the last eight in 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010.

Not saying we shouldn't try of course - but we haven't got a divine right to be even close to winning the WC. France and Italy found that out too this time round.

I thought going into the world cup England were about the tenth best team in the world. But all of the south american teams have proven to be much better than most people expected so i would say about 16th in the world is about right.

I thought New Zealand were the worst by a long way - but as for the next 20 or so places, well we are one of those also rans

What I fail to understand is how on earth the manager hoped to compete with his 2 key players so obviously unfit. Both Rooney and Barry were still carrying injuries.

The managers 2 key players I hasten to add>
