No idea today but over a period it's been Barry.

All of a sudden people that 'know' football say that you need a 'holding' midfielder and apparently Barry fits the bill. Guess what? He doesn't. He's too one footed to play the role, he's slow, he doesn't read the game, he's just not good enough. The Germany 3rd & 4th goals were arguably at least partly down to him.

Play a holding midfielder if you have a Makelele or an Eilts (Euro 96 for those of you too young to remember) but don't shove some average scuffler in there who is flavour of the month because he apparently allows others to 'play'. He doesn't because the others know that he's not good enough so they don't 'play' but spend all match worrying about what doughnut boy is going to do. Not his fault, Man City have been duped into paying him God knows what to do stuff all, but Capello should know better.

John Terry. You cant build team spirit with such an ammoral person at the helm. From his interview it was obvious he still thinks he is the captain of the team. England players had their chance months ago to make their stand over this rotten person.

Barry worst for mine, simply not up to it and left the defence completely exposed, which can't happen when your defence is that slow.

Johnson looked unfit and uninterested yesterday.

James needs to work on his arms as much as his hair. Weak arm cost us goals.

Barry lost possession at key moments that cost us goals. Basically was ****.

Milner I just don't get him. Can deliver a good cross, but can't pass the first man when running with the ball.

Heskey, even he looked embarrassed at being sent on when we needed to give Crouch a go.

Lampard best game and was unlucky with the disallowed goal and shot against the bar but then kept shooting when better options were on so clearly he was more interested in being able to say he scored in a world cup finals.

Rooney isn't a one man team and can point at lack of support as mitigation for a very poor world cup from him but realistically should have been dropped for at least half of a match to be ready for yesterday to rekindle his fire.

Upson scored a goal but out muscled for Germany's opener with Terry just standing there.

Manager. Bad squad selection but he has a right to be disappointed that the players who followed his instructions in qualifying didn;t turn up at the finals.

Almost as bad as terry for their 1st!!

Not the worst overall but Glen Johnson was the worst in terms of regression. Played very well against USA and looked like he might have a good tournament but just disintegrated thereafter. He was terribly poor against Algeria and far worse today.

I do, however, agree with The Big O; Ashley Cole was the only person in the whole team who didn't play badly. And even he didn't play well, he just didn't f**k up.

Glen Johnson out of position many times,because HE IS NOT a full back.Loves going forward ,but is done for speed and his positional sense is awful when defending.In the centre when their is an opposition player coming in from the wing.Of course he is not the only one at fault,but should never have been picked in the first place.
How could Rooney have been passed fit.I still believe that playing in the 2nd leg of the Champions League after going off badly injured inthe 1st leg and being on crutches did for him.Injuries need rest and time,yet Ferguson carried on playing him,then Capello too.
  The writing was always on the wall as we don't have enough World Class players.

I went into this tournament saying he was the only player we had who was worthy of winning a world cup. Misplaced praise. Wait til September though when he knocks in four against Blackpool or Bolton and Andy Gray and Richard Keys will be convincing us he is better than Messi.

As for Rooney, yes he was poor, but questions have to be asked why the idiotic Italian played him in all the warm up games. It's not for United to rest him in vital PL games to prepare him for England, they pay his wages. But playing in stupid games against Egypt et al, knowing he was carrying a knock. Lunacy.

I watched Capello's teams from when Ch4 starting showing Serie A on Sunday afternoons with AC Milan to Roma to Real and respected him as a top coach.
However he hit rock bottom for me when he took Heskey to South Africa.The other teams must have been overjoyed at the thought of playing against him.
Was it because there is nobody better around?I think not,and that is a huge black mark against Capello.
My Spanish friend who has a Real season ticket slated Capello's time at Real saying he got them playing awful football,and of course they parted company with him.
To sum up we do not have 11 World class players and the coach picked a bad side.Talk to any supporters and they all say the same about G Johnson,good going forward,terrible tracking back,terrible positional play.

Emile Heskey, Sean Wright Phillips and Gareth Barry - 3 players who have never ever in a million years been international standard let alone being on the plane to SA

There probably isn't an answer,but there has been no response to the question regarding where is our World class holding midfielder,a very important position that breaks down the opposition and allows the attack to push up.(Makelele,and Essien style).
Without that key player it becomes more difficult.

Yesterday it was Barry without a shadow of a doubt.

Overall? Well it depends if it's a case of how much was expected. If so, then Rooney by an absolute mile. If not then I'd have to say Barry again.
