RTE v BBC

Hansen: “Once England got the goal the confidence levels surged, they were excellent.”

Eamon Dunphy: “They just didn’t grow in confidence at all after the goal.”

Lineker: “The goal really settled them, didn’t it? They pushed on from there.”

Ronnie Whelan: “You’d think they’d have kicked on from when they scored, but they actually got worse.”

Roy: “England’s crossing has been absolutely outstanding.”

Giles: “Some of the crossing was just awful.”

Shearer: “Rooney looks more confident, he’s getting around the pitch a lot better.”

Dunphy: “It’s shocking to see Rooney so subdued, he’s been reduced to a shivering wreck.”

Shearer: “They look much more comfortable on the ball, they’re passing it with a purpose, with pace, they’re closing down – a much better performance, it’s encouraging.”

Giles: “They’re much better than they have been, but they couldn’t have been worse.”

No arguments, then. Second half. England held on. Full-time. Ready?

Lee Dixon: “A great performance.”

Dunphy: “Shocking . . . absolutely incredibly bad . . . pretty awful stuff.”

Hansen: “The commitment was there, the spirit was there, the enterprise was there, the creativity was there, they passed it better – they could have scored five or six quite easily. Capello will obviously be delighted with the performance.”

Giles: “If that’s the shackles off what’ll they be like when the shackles are back on?”

’Arry Redknapp: “We played with pace, we got after them, we pressed them, there wasn’t a weakness in the team.”

Dunphy: “They were astonishingly poor.”

Lineker: “He looked more like the Rooney we know.”

Ronnie: “Rooney is a major worry, his form, his body language, his demeanour, everything.”

Dixon: “Gerrard was outstanding.”

Dunphy: “I can’t believe how bad Gerrard was today.”

’Arry: “Across midfield we were top drawer.”

Giles: “Barry got worse as the game went on, Milner, Gerrard and Lampard the same.”

’Arry: “Bring it on! Whoever we play we’ll be difficult to beat.”

Ronnie: “If they don’t improve they’ll go straight out, it was a very, very inept performance.”

'absolutely incredibly bad'

Really? Sure he wasn't talking about the Algeria game? All this shows is that the RTE commentators has an anti-english bias. Hardly a surprise given that a) they're irish and b) they are seeeeeething about not being in the WC (quite rightly).

I'm irish-manx, so I consider myself neutral, like...er...the Swiss. But with less stolen nazi gold.

in fairness the RTE guys just go out of their way to be critical of all teams. they don;t hold back on the irish team either. Tbh its refreshing change from the bland nonsence you get on bbc.

I happened to see the post match views of the pundits on both channels and i have to say RTE was was much better.

Linekar, Shearer and especially Hansen have to show bias towards England or they would be out of a job for being unpatriotic so you have to take what they say with a pinch of salt.

The BBC pundits stated Milner was a star turn but Dunphy thought he was rubbish which i have to agree with and its not often i can say that. The RTE panel summed it up when they labelled England the biggest soap opera on tv and called the england players a bunch of spoofers.

Ronaldo only has to hit one stray pass for Dunphy to be on his case calling him a show pony but i have to disagree with the way he has been sticking up for Rooney over the three games. He has blamed everything under the sun for Rooneys woeful performances other than the player himself. He is playing with so much fear he needs a pair of wing mirrors. He did not even want the ball for two games.

Ronaldo only has to give one stray pass and Dunphy is on his case

English idiot says something, Irish idiot says something else.

BBC pundits and RTE pundits may be vastly different, but they're all as bad as each other. They talk utter nonsense.

When Eamon Dunphy says something you have to remember there is no middle ground with him.  Its brilliant or its tripe.  I think he famously said of Maradona "This boy can't play."

I wouldn't say the panel has a bias for / against any team.  RTE show all the games (ITV/ BBC share) so the panel just say what they think.   No agendas.

England missed chances and it could have been 3-0, but they have not dominated any of the weak teams they played in the group.  Rooney needs a goal badly to bring back his confidence.

Hilarious really.  Have to say I would largely agree with the RTE interpretation.  Are BBC pundits contractually obliged to beat the drum? They can't genuinely believe what they are saying, can they?

The real test is not what the Irish pundits say about England - it's easy to be honest about a foreign team.

The test is what they say about Ireland and Irish players.

On that count there's not much difference between any of them.

I'm just back from New York after being there a week - the likes of Martin Tyler and Ian Darke were commentating over there and were obviously being told to speak about the USA by their paymasters - it was so refreshing hearing them bang on about all things american!!

The RTE lads call it the way they see it, the Irish mentality is to be cynical and critical and the English way is all matey, sucking up, hand on the knee, false pretence crap. RTE is just good straight punditry no malice or bias intended.

they were probably over the top critical on the England Slovenia game but they are straight shooters and usually are very enjoyable to listen to, they slate the Irish team too to be fair... BBC & ITV are just complete planks in comparison...Desailly has to be the worst of the bunch by some distance
