Who is likely to start up front for Italy? Gilardino? Di Natale? Qualification doesn't point to anyone being the main/favoured striker?

He's naming a squad Sunday which will almost certainly be the final squad. I think he will take:

Pazzini
Toni
Gilardino
Borriello
and I think Del Piero is a very good shot at the fifth

HOWEVER, he could almost as easily take:

Totti (I think DP trumps him for commitment though)
Di Natale
Iaquinta
Rossi
Quagliarella

OR much, much more unlikely:

Miccoli
Balotelli
Cassano
Amauri
Inzaghi

Who really knows though? The Italian press don't.

My guess is that he hasn't decided on starters yet and will see what happens in the warm-ups. He really doesn't care what anyone else thinks (why should he? He won last time) and I think any of the first four could potentially be starters.

pretty much agree, whoever grabs a goal in the warmups starts.
Report Stringer April 30, 2010 5:10 PM BST
Would be gutted if Di Natale didn't make it

But if they did they would have to take Toni to compensate since he is pretty small imo
Report sonnyraygurnden April 30, 2010 7:57 PM BST
thought Amauri was Brazilian

think cassano is getting married and doesnt want to be in squad .

I hope Gilardino is a starter. I have becked him for top goalscorer for the WC at 50's. In all honesty I think he would be nuts to dismiss him. Probably the most inform striker and a prime age of 27 means he should get the nod over some of the others.

cant see him taking Luca Toni

TONI ?????

Nth.Korea nad New Zealand might pick him I spose, that is about it
Report kingofROME May 2, 2010 11:10 AM BST
Totti
Di Natale
Miccoli
Cassano
Iaquinta

If Lippi had flair and imagination he would pick this forward line. Iaquinta would only get in as an alternative. And I believe Italy would have a serious chance with these players however he will not pick them. Totti is in good condition, still short of fitness but he is getting back and in form, It will be tottis decision and I think he will go
Report tanstaafl May 3, 2010 1:46 PM BST
Pazzini
Gila
Borriello
Di Natale
Iaquinta
Quagliarella

Totti and Toni were unavailable but there are chances they could come into the final squad. He will also cut one. I still think Toni and Totti will come in for Iaquinta and Quagliarella. Perhaps Borriello will drop out as well. Appears no way back in for Del Piero now.

Giuseppe Rossi was also unavailable. Perhaps he will come in if Toni doesn't.

For those who think the Toni idea is stupid, he just picked Iaquinta. Toni has played more games and is in better form and has more goals for Italy than Iaquinta.

De Rossi, Totti, Toni, Perrotta and anyone else from Roma or Inter were unavailable. Rossi and Aquilani also.

really is a shame lippi will not pick miccoli and cassano for the world cup. Pazzini going is a plus. This weekend we will see italys most creative attackers go up against each other, Palermo v Sampdoria and neither will be going. Lippi will continue with the old huve players and it has become a joke. How Cannavaro and Camoranesi will go is sickening to say the least. Lippi had his time and delivered but that era should have be left in the past

*juve
Report d crtitic May 8, 2010 12:15 PM BST
lippi only picks juve players. he's an agent of juve. he pisses of non juve supporters. there should be a fifa law that plauers are selected on merit for national teams and not at the whim of a manager like lippi who acts on behalf of juve. players like miccoli deserve to go to the world cup based on their form. why should a player miss out on such honours just because he fell out with juve in the past. lippi is a disgrace and turns italians like me into almost neutrals.

Domenico Criscito (Genoa)
Mattia Cassani (Palermo)
Salvatore Bocchetti (Genoa)
Andrea Pirlo (Milan)
Gennaro Gattuso (Milan)
Daniele De Rossi (Roma)
Riccardo Montolivo (Fiorentina)
Mauro Camoranesi (Juventus)
Angelo Palombo (Sampdoria)

Fabio Quagliarella (Napoli)
Giuseppe Rossi (Villarreal)
Vincenzo Iaquinta (Juventus)
Antonio Di Natale (Udinese)

I think these players may get dropped. Either way Lippi has picked a team of mainly favourites with players he likes but when it comes down to it will not make the difference. The world cup comes about every 4 years and so many talented players will not be on show all because of stubborness. Its been coming but the fact that these players miss out because of his tactics is wrong
