What an a**hole to let his country down like that.

He held a status in the national team equal to Johan Cruyff pre 1978 (on a lesser scale, obviously) but at least Cruyff forewent the World Cup on moral grounds while Keane just had a head-fit.

Once a quitter, always a quitter.

100 per cent gutless what he did i would walk 100 miles for i second in an irish jersey.mick mc carthy took it all like a man . he did the same at sunderland and kept wolves up fair play to mick . top bloke mick never shirked a challenge.as for keane a nobody in my book that never did fck all for his country

J2blue - I mean he was as important to Ireland as was Cruyff to Holland, though Keane and Ireland were far less talented.

Once a quitter, always a quitter.

keane was superb in that qualifying campaign alone..his performance when we beat the dutch at lansdowne for me was his best ever game in an irish shirt..it was a flawless performance from the middle of field..he was every where that day..to say he did fck all is silly..i cant stand the man,but you cannot take away from the fact he was a superb player.

McCarthy kicked Keane out - he never walked.

one major difference between keane and the rest of that squad, keane was a born winner

"Winners never quit and quitters never win". Roy Keane proves this wrong.

take a look at his list of honours
Report bigpalmers May 19, 2010 9:59 AM BST
then add up all the honours the rest of that squad won in total and you might begin to understand what i'm saying btw theseare facts i'm talking about

this is one occaison where he let himself, his team mates and his country down. i know keane apolagists will say look at his medals etc well we're not we're talking about the incident in question. without him they drew with the eventual runners up and held spain to a draw going out on penalties. i firmly believe with him in the team they could have done better - any irishman who were at the time looking at the draw probably couldnt believe how the draw was opening infront of them.

The way the squad pulled together after Saipan was a big factor in how well the team did at that WC - with Keane still in the squad it would have been too divisive and we probably wouldn't have gotten out of the group.

All conjecture and speculation of course.
