I can only think of one tbh, ashley cole. Who else would get into a world XI? Maybe Gerrard, but i'm not sure he would.

They might win the world cup, but it's hard to justify the price. Reached the semis twice in their history and failed to qualify for Euro 2008. Once decent qualifying campaign does not a summer make!

The best thing about England is the Italian manager imo.

Brazil's price lengthened after the World Cup draw, I can't see why, can anybody really envisage a situation here they wont make it through the group stage?

Brazil the only team to win on a different continent to their own I mention this because surelly its totally out of the question they'll be an African winner.

id say terry, cole, rio, gezza, lamps and rooney are all truely world class on the basis they would walk into any side in the world
Report kincsem December 14, 2009 10:55 AM GMT

agreed good point, they will need to take the very limited amount of chances they get, and work their bollix off in the middle of the park, deny the opposition space, and stop thinking they can beat the top teams in an open game.

I can name more than 3 world class players in the England team

Rooney
Gerrard
Lampard
Terry
Ferdinand
Ashley Cole
Walcott

brazil - not that strong, at least not at the moment
argentine - dangerous
france - still dangerous
italy - too old
holland - dangerous
germany - dangerous
portugal - dangerous
spain - very very dangerous

dont think engliand will make it although it is an easy first round for england
i suspect argentine, spain, holland and germany as favs.

if i had to choose at the moment, id pick spain

Name one team with 3 world class players. I'd do well to get past Spain.

It's a team sport anyway.
Report avertuoso December 14, 2009 5:51 PM GMT
i agree it is a team sport but in my opinion you need more than 3 world class players to win the world cup
Report PJMASTER December 14, 2009 6:35 PM GMT
Define what you mean by "world class", it's a very generalised term. A player who is better than any other player in the world in his position? In the top3 in his position, top 5, top 10?
Report Knight Rider December 14, 2009 9:05 PM GMT
Hard to judge the English players as they all play in their own league, a style of play they've been used to since birth versus mostly foreign players who have to adapt to the language, culture, weather, refereeing, style of play etc.

Back when England wasn't the richest league, many of our top players went abroad with mixed success. Someone like Lampard has been very good for Chelsea but can you really imagine him being the star of Barcelona or Real Madrid? He would be a fringe player at best imo. But we'll never know.
Report avertuoso December 14, 2009 9:24 PM GMT
knight rider summed it up well as i think world class means you can play for any team in the world and not look or feel out of place
Report cricnut December 14, 2009 10:02 PM GMT
Ha Ha world class players, Ashley Cole, Rio Ferdinand, your really having a laugh, Gerrards not great, Walcott not got much experiance. Ferdinand, need someone to replace him, a weak link in our defence. Terry, Lampard and Rooney are all very good players, but can't say World Class, you have to be able to do something special, to be called world class and like someone put on this thread earlier, the only thing thats World Class about England is the manager, Capello
