France and Portugal only squeaked in through the playoffs whilst England qualified at a canter.

"The seeding criteria differs from the last World Cup in Germany when they were allocated on team's world rankings over the past three years, with performances at the previous two tournaments also taken into account ."

how suitable for England

true Lusitano

They always decide on the method when they know what seedings the method will produce so it seems clear they decide who they want to be seeded and then figure out criteria to justify it .

"Using Fifa's formula for the 2006 World Cup, current world rankings and performances in the previous two finals" would see Germany, Brazil, Italy, Spain, England, France and Argentina seeded in that order along with hosts South Africa.

If however Fifa's world rankings alone are used then France would miss out on being seeded with Holland taking their place.

Rankings alone have not been used in the past but Fifa relaunched the system with much fanfare a couple of years ago, boasting the new-look rankings were much more indicative of a country's current position in world football.

Fifa also announced last week that if rankings were to be used in any way to determine seeding then the October standings would be used.

Ok now lets see the facts

FRANCE

Euro'08 - group stage
WC'06 - runners up
Euro'04 - Qtr Finals

PORTUGAL

Euro'08 - Qtr Finals
WC'06 - Semi-Finals
Euro'04 - runners up

ENGLAND

Euro'08 - N/A
WC'06 - Qtr Finals
Euro'04 - Qtr Finals

With the runners up position France had in the last World Cup it puts them without a doubt in front

Portugal is without a doubt way ahead of England in every competition for the last 6 years

Amazing how one qualifying just washes out the last 6/7 years of performances

The Euro's are a UEFA competition and as such FIFA don't generally use them for rankings.

of course that if we switched places, England with Portugal

the meltdown here would be HUMONGOUS

Despite being runners-up last time, FIFA probably felt pressured to somehow punish France in the light of Handballgate, so lumping them into Pot 4 was probably felt to be an easy get-out for them. In Japan/SK 2002 they finished bottom of their group, Portugal finished 3rd bottom, while England made the quarters. They have stated that the last two World Cups count, and not any Euros.

Portugal went one step further last time thanks to penalties, and also somewhat laboured towards qualification compared to England, while France's final-reaching was their only plus in totting things up, you feel.

It feels to me that this was like Del Potro, Federer and Murray trying to get through to the semi-finals on the most marginal of percentages, with England being the lucky ones to get the nod.

Anyway, remember the Euro 2000 Group A table which Portugal topped ahead of England, Germany and Romania? I don't think it'll bother your boys too much being unseeded. ;)

to tell you the truth i dont have great expectations towards Portugal in the World Cup, we have a very young team in terms of age, we lack the lidership of one or two older guys, one Figo or a Rui Costa would be gold

but maybe just maybe all the environment around the WC and a C. Ronaldo and Deco in good form could make something happen

I don't think any team will look forward to playing Portugal. They can definitely pull something put of the bag if they want to, and I think they'll do OK. Expect the quarters at least. Where you'll probably put England out. :^0
