This two runner race - just before the off showed the pathetic value of the win pools in American racing.

Fav 1/9 2nd fav evs.

Shocking.

Actual final odds were 1/5 and 7/5. Still a shocking 125% book but this equates, I think, to 20% pari-mutuel takeout which is typical of US racing and also roughly the same as UK Tote returns?

In this day and age, especially where money is placed on the internet and actual cash doesn't change hands, the biggest rip-off is the breakage. They calculate the dividend, and anything from $2.40 to $2.59 pays out at $2.40. All those 19cents add up to chunks. There is no excuse for not declaring the dividends to the penny.

But the difference is they're racing for $30,000, we're racing for £2,700 over here.
